Fashionable straw hat with short brim and pompon detail. Authentic Wayuu Hats are handmade from woven Mawisa straw in the traditional style of the Wayuu tribe that has been passed down for generations. The Maria Hat will instantly refine any look. Its ancestral and head-turning design is coordinated with a traditionally woven cotton band and three pink and turquoise pompons. Perfect for the beach or walking around the city, its loose weave allows your heart to breathe comfortably. Match it with a long kaftan and simple leather sandals for an enhanced look.
Each hat is elaborated by hand at home by artisans from the Wayúu tribe in approximately 2 days.
Due to its hand craftsmanship, hats can vary slightly in size and have some imperfections, which is part of its uniqueness.
Washein was founded by Claudia – Nazareth’s hospital director. Her aim is to introduce people around the world with the most beautiful crafts from the native Wayúu tribe of Colombia. The artisans are involved in all the process, from dying the straw filaments, to carefully weaving the hats and bags and finally trimming and cleaning them. The pompons that decorate them are weaved by a group of Wayúu women from a different community, that live in Riohacha, the capital of La Guajira.

Wayúu Hats are easy to clean. Wipe down the hat with a soft, lint-free, tightly-woven cloth (to prevent catching or snagging). You may also try a moist facial or baby wipe. Should a stray piece of straw pop up on the crown or brim, do not pull it — simply snip it off with a nail clipper or a pair of small scissors.
