Alexander McQueen has dressed more consequential red carpets than almost any house of its age, and it has done it with structure rather than with sparkle. The gowns that get photographed are the ones that hold a shape.

The dress that changed the house

On 29 April 2011, Catherine Middleton married in a dress designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. It was the single most watched garment of the decade, and it was a McQueen argument rather than a bridal one: a structured bodice, a narrow waist, lace worked by hand. The house had lost its founder fourteen months earlier, in February 2010, and that dress established that the codes would continue.

Why McQueen photographs well

Three reasons, all of them construction rather than styling.

The bodice is boned, so the silhouette reads clean under a flash instead of collapsing. The shoulder is cut sharp and slightly extended, which squares the frame in a straight-on photograph. And the house tends to choose one idea per dress, a single asymmetric shoulder, a single train, rather than several, so the shape survives being reduced to a thumbnail.
