The House and Its Buckles
Roger Vivier studied sculpture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and opened his house in Paris in 1937. He designed the shoes for Christian Dior from 1953 to 1963, made the shoes Queen Elizabeth II wore to her coronation in 1953, created the modern stiletto in 1954 and the comma heel in 1959. The Belle Vivier pump, with its square chrome buckle, first appeared on the Yves Saint Laurent runway in 1965, and Catherine Deneuve wore it in Belle de Jour two years later.
The house is now part of the Tod's Group, and Gherardo Felloni has been creative director since 2018.
