Ball Gowns 2026: Ball Gown vs Evening Gown vs Column Guide

A ball gown is a floor-length evening dress with a fitted bodice and a full skirt, made for black tie, white tie and formal balls. A column gown is slimmer and often more modern. Markarian, the New York eveningwear label, leans toward the column, and Coveti’s evening gowns edit holds both shapes, shipped worldwide.

Ball gown vs evening gown vs column gown

The three terms get used as if they mean the same thing. They do not. Every ball gown is an evening gown, but not every evening gown is a ball gown. The difference is the skirt.

Shape Skirt Feel Best for
Ball gown Full from the waist, often with volume underneath Traditional, ceremonial White tie, debutante balls, royal-style galas
Evening gown Any floor-length skirt The broad category Black tie, galas, formal dinners
Column gown Straight from bust to hem, often with a slit Modern, streamlined Black tie, dinners, events with dancing
Slip gown Narrow and fluid, on fine straps Relaxed, sensual Evening parties, warm-weather balls

For a deeper look at the slim silhouette, read our guide to column gowns. For the dress code question, our white tie dress code guide explains the one invitation where a full skirt is close to expected. You can also browse every Markarian gown in one place.

Where ball gowns are worn now

The ball is alive and well. It just looks different in each country.

  • United Kingdom and Europe: charity balls, regimental balls, university May balls and winter balls, and the Viennese ball season in January and February.
  • Australia: the southern winter is ball season, with university balls and charity galas through June and July.
  • United States: charity galas, museum benefits, debutante balls and black tie weddings.
  • The UAE: gala dinners and formal weddings, often with a preference for more coverage on the arms and shoulders.

For the cold-weather calendar specifically, our guide to winter ball dresses covers fabrics with weight and how to dress for a long night in December.

The Markarian gown edit

Markarian does not make the giant crinoline skirt. Its gowns are columns and slips, cut close and lined in silk. That makes them easier to wear, easier to dance in and, to my eye, more interesting than another tulle skirt.

Clover Silver Gown

The Clover Silver Gown is the house signature: a folded off-the-shoulder neckline, a slim column body and a back slit for walking. In silver brocade it looks modern and quietly glamorous. The brocade is heavy enough to hold the column line on its own, which is why it photographs so cleanly.

Clover Pink Bouquet Ikat Gown

The same shape appears in the Markarian x Over The Moon collaboration. The Clover Pink Bouquet Ikat Gown keeps the folded off-the-shoulder neckline and slim column line in a pink bouquet ikat. It suits a spring ball, a garden gala and a summer wedding with a black tie dress code.

Neroli Black Satin and Velvet Gown

The Neroli Black Satin and Velvet Gown is the closest Markarian comes to the ball gown idea. Fluid black satin is cut on the bias, and a silk velvet peplum ruffle at the waist adds volume at the hip without a full skirt. Fine straps keep the top light. Black satin is the most reliable choice for any ball where you do not know the crowd.

Aziza Beaded Slip Gown

The Aziza Beaded Slip Gown is covered from strap to hem in sapphire, onyx and ivory-toned beads and sequins. The silhouette is simple and fitted, so the embellishment carries it. Markarian pairs it with the Goldie Beaded Cape Top, whose long shoulder trains are worked in the same beads. Worn over the gown, the cape adds coverage for a formal venue.

Pre-Fall 2026 gowns

Three Pre-Fall 2026 gowns are already live on Coveti. The Nerine Gingham Sequin Gown brings a playful check to the floor. The Margaretta Dusk Marigold Ikat Gown carries the season’s ikat print, and the Adelaide Red Bloom Chiffon Gown is the softest of the group in floating chiffon.

When a column beats a full skirt

A full ball skirt is beautiful in a ballroom and difficult almost everywhere else. A column wins in five situations.

  • Seated dinners. A column fits under a round table with ten guests. A hooped skirt does not.
  • Dancing. A back slit, as on the Clover, lets you move. A full skirt needs space on the floor.
  • Travel. A column packs into a suitcase for a destination ball. A crinoline needs its own seat.
  • Petite frames. A long unbroken line adds height. A large skirt can swamp a small frame.
  • Repeat wear. A silver brocade column works at a gala, a black tie wedding and a winter ball in the same year.

Choose the full skirt for white tie, a debutante ball and any invitation that mentions a court. For those, look through our gala dresses guide and the Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera hubs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a ball gown and an evening gown?

A ball gown is a type of evening gown with a fitted bodice and a full skirt. Evening gown is the wider term for any floor-length formal dress, including columns, slips and mermaid shapes.

What do you wear to a ball?

Check the dress code. Black tie calls for a floor-length gown, and a full skirt, a column and a slip are all correct. White tie is the most formal and favours a full-length gown with covered shoulders and long gloves.

Is a column gown formal enough for a ball?

Yes. A floor-length column gown in a rich fabric such as silver brocade and satin is correct for a black tie ball. Only white tie events lean firmly toward a full skirt.

Does Markarian make ball gowns?

Markarian makes floor-length evening gowns in column and slip shapes rather than full crinoline ball gowns. The Clover, Neroli and Aziza gowns are all suitable for black tie balls.

Does Markarian run true to size?

Yes. Markarian cuts to its standard US sizing, so take your usual size. Coveti lists the gowns in UK sizes 4 to 18, where US 0 is UK 4 and US 14 is UK 18.
