White Tie Dress Code for Women: What to Wear in 2026

The white tie dress code is the most formal in Western etiquette. For women it means a floor-length evening gown, traditionally worn with long evening gloves, refined jewellery and polished hair. Men wear a tailcoat with a white waistcoat and white bow tie. At Coveti, full-length gowns from Roksanda, Erdem and Safiyaa meet the brief.

White tie invitations are rare, which is exactly why they cause so much worry. Most of us will see black tie many times before we ever see the words “white tie” on a card. This guide sets out what the code asks of women, piece by piece, how it differs from black tie, and which gowns and gloves to look at now.

What does white tie mean?

White tie means full evening dress, the highest level of formality a host can request. It sits one step above black tie and leaves very little room for interpretation.

The name comes from the menswear: a white bow tie worn with a black tailcoat, a white waistcoat and a stiff-fronted shirt. For women, the equivalent is a full-length evening gown. Invitations may say “White Tie”, and some British invitations say “Evening Dress” to mean the same thing. If an invitation adds “Decorations”, guests who hold orders and medals are expected to wear them.

You are most likely to meet the code at state banquets, some grand balls and a small number of formal dinners held by livery companies, embassies and learned societies.

How is white tie different from black tie?

White tie is stricter on length, more formal in fabric and traditionally adds long gloves. Black tie gives women more choice, including elegant midi lengths and dressy tailoring at many events.

The table below sets the main dress codes side by side, from most formal to least. It is a useful reference for any invitation, not just white tie.

Dress code What it means Women Men Hemline for women
White tie Full evening dress, the most formal code Floor-length evening gown, long gloves traditional Black tailcoat, white waistcoat, white bow tie Floor length only
Black tie Formal evening dress Floor-length gown, with a very dressy midi accepted at some events Dinner jacket (tuxedo), black bow tie Floor length preferred

What should a woman wear to a white tie event?

A woman should wear a floor-length evening gown in a rich fabric such as silk satin, duchess satin, taffeta, velvet and heavy crepe. The hem should reach the floor, and a short dress is not appropriate.

Beyond length, the code rewards quality and restraint. A gown with a clean, considered line will look more correct than one covered in trend details. Ball gowns with full skirts suit the grandest occasions, but a well-cut column is just as formal, provided it is floor length and made in a substantial fabric.

The gown: length, fabric and shape

Look for three things: a hem that grazes the floor in your evening shoes, a fabric with some weight and sheen, and a neckline that will sit well with long gloves and jewellery.

The Roksanda Kami Dress in Light Aqua is a good example of a column that works at this level. It is cut in 100% silk satin as a bias column that falls to the floor, with wide draped sleeves gathered at the cuff so they swing as you walk. The lining is 73% acetate and 27% silk, the house standard.

For more structure, the Syla Dress in Burgundy is a structured floor-length column in sheer cloque with short sleeves and an architectural draped detail at the hip. The Nella Dress in Ultra Pink takes a bolder route: ultra pink silk satin sweeps around the body, cinches at the waist, and a single cape falls from one shoulder over an orange lining. Roksanda made it with galas and black tie in mind, and it has the presence a white tie room asks for. For a fuller skirt in a deeper colour, the Rune Dress in Burgundy pairs structured short sleeves and a boat neckline with architectural pleating in sheer cloque.

Outside Roksanda, the Erdem Long Sleeve Draped Gown and the Erdem Embroidered Textured Satin Short Sleeve Draped Gown carry the formality of a London couture house. For a full skirt, the Richard Quinn Tulle Three-Bow Navy Ball Gown and the Huishan Zhang Drew Gown in Pink Fuchsia Duchesse both bring proper ballroom volume. The Safiyaa Banu Wine Long Dress suits women who prefer a sleek, covered line in a deep colour.

Colour

Any colour can work at white tie, but deep jewel tones and clear, saturated shades read as the most formal. Burgundy, sapphire, emerald, navy and black are all safe.

Roksanda’s Autumn Winter 2026 palette is well suited to formal evenings: deep burgundy, wine, Calliope (a dark oxblood), Heliotrope (a vivid fuchsia), sapphire and navy. Our Roksanda Autumn Winter 2026 edit covers the full collection.

Do you have to wear gloves to a white tie event?

Long gloves are traditional at white tie, though they are no longer strictly required at most events. Wearing them is never wrong, and at the most formal occasions they are still expected.

The classic choice is an opera glove that reaches above the elbow, in white kid leather, satin and fine fabric. Gloves are worn on arrival, while greeting and while dancing. They come off to eat: remove them at the table and lay them in your lap, then put them back on after dinner. Rings are worn under the glove, not over it, while bracelets may sit over the glove at the wrist.

Gloves work best with sleeveless and short-sleeved gowns. With a long-sleeved gown such as the Erdem above, leave them off. With wide sleeves like those on the Kami, a shorter glove is the neater option.

For a classic look, the Scanlan Theodore Leather Opera Gloves in Camelia and the Khaite Remo Long Gloves in Cream Leather both have the length the code calls for. The Maria Lucia Hohan Leandra Long Leather Gloves in Black suit a black, navy and burgundy gown, and the Safiyaa Long Gloves in Black Lace add texture. Our guide on how to wear opera gloves covers fit and length in more detail.

What jewellery is appropriate for white tie?

White tie is the one occasion where serious jewellery is expected. Fine pieces such as diamond earrings, a necklace and a bracelet are all appropriate, worn with some restraint so the gown still leads.

In British tradition, tiaras are reserved for white tie and are customarily worn by married women. If you do not own a tiara, nobody will notice its absence. A pair of statement earrings and a single bracelet over the glove make a complete, correct look. With a high neckline, skip the necklace and let the earrings do the work. With a single cape, like the one on the Nella, one statement earring on the open side looks deliberate. The Magda Butrym Asymmetric Crystal Cascade Earrings in Silver are designed for exactly that kind of asymmetric balance.

How should you wear your hair for white tie?

Hair for white tie is usually worn up, because an updo shows off earrings, a necklace and a neckline, and sits well with a tiara. It is the traditional choice, but it is not a rule.

A low chignon, a sleek bun and a soft French twist all work. If you prefer your hair down, keep it polished: smooth waves rather than undone texture. Make-up follows the same idea: polished, with one focus, usually the eyes and the lips.

What bag and shoes go with a white tie gown?

Carry a small evening clutch and wear closed heels in satin, leather and metallic finishes. Both should be quiet enough to let the gown and jewellery lead.

A clutch only needs to hold a phone, a lipstick and a card. The Saint Laurent EVENING soft clutch in satin is the right scale. For shoes, choose a heel you can stand in for hours: white tie evenings involve a receiving line, a long dinner and often dancing. Your hem should just skim the floor in the shoes you plan to wear, so take them to any fittings.

What should you not wear to a white tie event?

Avoid anything short, casual and overtly trend-led. A cocktail dress, a midi, a jumpsuit and daytime fabrics such as cotton and linen are all below the code.

Other things to leave at home:

  • Very revealing cuts. Deep plunges and high slits sit awkwardly with the ceremonial tone.
  • Bare legs with a split skirt at a state occasion. Sheer tights are the safer choice.
  • A large day bag. Hand it in at the cloakroom and carry a clutch.
  • Fascinators and day hats. These belong to daytime events, not white tie.
  • White and ivory at a wedding, unless the couple has asked for it.

Can you wear trousers to a white tie event?

Trousers (pants, in the US) are not traditional at white tie. At a black tie optional party a dressy satin trouser suit is fine, but at white tie the floor-length gown is the expected answer.

If you are unsure, ask the host. Some modern events are relaxed about this, but a state banquet and a formal ball will not be. For evenings where tailoring is welcome, see our guide to formal dresses and the tailored pieces in our evening dresses edit.

How do I find the right size in a formal gown?

Size by your largest measurement, then have the hem taken up in the shoes you will wear. A floor-length gown that is too long will trip you, and one that is too short reads as the wrong length.

Roksanda cuts UK sizes 4 to 22, and Coveti lists UK 4 to 18. The brand says its pieces fit true to size, and its model wears a UK 8. US sizing is the UK size minus four, so a UK 8 is a US 4, and EU sizing is the UK size plus 28, so a UK 8 is an EU 36. Our Roksanda size guide has the full body chart in centimetres. Silk satin and cloque gowns need specialist dry cleaning, so factor that in after the event.

Where can I shop white tie gowns?

Start with our evening gowns and maxi dresses collections, then narrow by colour and fabric. Coveti ships worldwide, and duties are calculated at checkout.

For a wider shortlist, our edit of the best designer evening gowns covers more houses, and the full Roksanda collection is on the Roksanda brand page. If you are planning summer events as well, our Royal Ascot dress code guide covers the daytime equivalent of formal dressing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the white tie dress code for women?

White tie for women means a floor-length evening gown in a formal fabric, traditionally worn with long evening gloves, fine jewellery and hair worn up. It is the most formal dress code, so short dresses, midis and trousers are not appropriate.

Is white tie more formal than black tie?

Yes. White tie is the most formal dress code and sits above black tie. For women the main differences are a strict floor-length hem and the tradition of long gloves. Men wear a tailcoat with a white waistcoat and white bow tie instead of a dinner jacket.

Do women have to wear gloves at white tie?

Long gloves are traditional at white tie and are still expected at the most formal occasions, though many events no longer insist on them. Wear them on arrival and while dancing, and take them off to eat.

Can I wear a tiara to a white tie event?

Tiaras are only worn at white tie, and in British tradition they are customarily worn by married women. They are never required. Statement earrings and a bracelet worn over the glove make a complete look without one.

Can I wear a midi dress to white tie?

No. White tie calls for a floor-length gown, so a midi, a cocktail dress and a jumpsuit all fall below the code. Keep midi lengths for black tie optional and cocktail invitations.

What colours are best for white tie?

Deep jewel tones such as burgundy, sapphire, emerald and navy read as the most formal, and black is always correct. Pale colours also work, but avoid white and ivory at a wedding.
