Huishan Zhang Vic Midi Dress in Pale Blue Sable | Midi Dresses | Coveti

An embellished dress is a dress decorated with applied surface work, such as crystals, sequins, beads, embroidery and feather trim, sewn onto the cloth by hand and machine after the pattern is cut. The decoration sets the formality, the weight and the price. This guide reads the names of the pieces Coveti holds, starting with Huishan Zhang embellished dresses and gowns, and explains what to look for before you commit.

Embellished dresses draw about 22,200 searches worldwide each month, with roughly 8,100 of them in the United Kingdom and 6,600 in the United States.

The five kinds of embellishment, by what the names say

A product name is the most honest description a house gives, so we sorted the in-stock dresses on Coveti by the words their names carry. On 7 November 2026, more than 300 in-stock dress names mention crystal, 51 mention embroidery, 16 mention sequins, nine mention feathers and nine mention beads.

Crystal. Cut glass stones set onto the cloth, singly, in clusters and as pendants. Crystal catches direct light hardest of all, so it reads from across a ballroom. It also adds the most weight, which is why houses tend to concentrate it at a neckline, a strap and a belt.

Sequins. Flat discs, usually stitched in overlapping rows. Sequins move with the body and flash as you walk, and an all over sequin dress has a liquid quality crystal cannot match.

Beads. Small glass and bugle beads. Beading gives a softer glow than crystal, closer to texture than to sparkle.

Embroidery. Thread work, sometimes combined with crystals and glass. Embroidery is the quietest of the five and the most varied, from cotton for daytime to tulle for night.

Feather trim. Applied at hems, cuffs and necklines. Feathers bring movement and volume with almost no weight, and they read as festive, so they suit a party better than a ceremony.

Huishan Zhang: where the house places its hand work

Huishan Zhang trained at Central Saint Martins in fashion and in pattern cutting, worked at Dior in leather goods and in the haute couture atelier, and launched his label in London. The V&A acquired his couture dragon dress in 2012. That atelier background shows in where the decoration sits: placed to follow the cut.

Coveti holds 21 Huishan Zhang dresses and gowns whose names state the decoration (embellished, embroidered, sequins), priced from $1,050 to $9,430. Two Resort 2027 pieces add crystal work that the names do not mention.

The Vic Midi Dress in Pale Blue Sable is cut in the house’s sable, a weave of 76% acetate and 24% polyester (a fabric name, not fur). It has an embellished halter neck and a column straight body scattered with small crystal motifs, and it is silk lined. The Farah Mini Dress in Apricot Sable takes the opposite route: full bishop sleeves gathered into deep cuffs, with crystal fanning from the neckline in drops across the skirt. It is also silk lined.

Six other houses, six approaches

David Koma is the crystal specialist in our catalogue: 60 in-stock dresses whose names state their decoration, from crystal and pearl to sequins and feathers, priced from $1,650 to $8,410. The decoration is graphic, built as stars, pendants and straps.

Rasario sets crystal against plain satin and velvet, often at a single point such as the neck: 43 named pieces from $2,185 to $9,290.

Saiid Kobeisy works at full coverage: 45 embellished dresses from $2,010 to $6,960, several of them long.

Safiyaa concentrates the work: many of its names place crystal and embellishment on a belt, a harness and a single detail, leaving long clean lines elsewhere.

Simkhai offers the most accessible entry, with 31 embellished dresses from $650 to $2,600, and Leo Lin adds 47 from $636 to $5,980.

How we measured: the figures are Coveti’s live catalogue on 7 November 2026, prices in USD, in-stock pieces only, counted by the Coveti Studio. Colour is the catalogue colour family, so the apricot Farah Mini Dress sits under Pink; where the catalogue holds no colour, the colour named in the product title is used.

Formality, weight and comfort over a long evening

Embellishment raises formality in proportion to how much of the dress it covers. A single crystal neckline on plain satin sits comfortably at a cocktail party. Full coverage, all over sequins and a long skirt worked to the hem read as black tie. Our black tie dresses guide sets out the line.

Weight is the cost nobody photographs. Dense crystal and beading hang from the shoulders and pull at the seams through four hours of standing and dancing. A halter neck, as on the Vic Midi Dress, carries weight at the back of the neck, so try it on for twenty minutes rather than two. Decoration concentrated at the neckline and waist, the Safiyaa approach, is easier to wear than an all over skirt.

Comfort also depends on what touches the skin. Stones have backs and threads can scratch, so a full lining, in silk on the Vic and Farah, is the best guarantee of comfort at midnight.

How to read embellishment quality

Density. Look at how close the stones and sequins sit. Even spacing, with no bald patches at seams and darts, means the work was planned with the pattern rather than applied to flat cloth afterwards.

Placement. Good embellishment follows the cut: it fans from a neckline, tapers down a skirt and stops cleanly at a seam. On the Farah, the crystal falls from the neckline in drops, which leads the eye down the length of the dress.

Lining. Turn the dress inside out if you can. A clean lining that covers the reverse of the decoration protects both the wearer and the work. If a product page does not mention lining, ask Coveti before you buy.

Occasions

Gala and black tie. Long, dark and densely worked: the Micheline, the Leila and the Saiid Kobeisy Fully Embellished Dress. See our edit of gala dresses for more.

Wedding guest. Choose placement over coverage and soft colour over black, so the decoration reads as respect for the day rather than competition. Pink embroidered organza and a crystal neckline both work. Our Huishan Zhang wedding guest guide lists the pieces by colour.

Party season. Sequins, feathers and shorter lengths: the Violetta, the Lyra and the Farah. The full edit sits in our Huishan Zhang Christmas party dresses guide.

Caring for an embellished dress

Store it flat, folded loosely around acid free tissue, when the decoration is heavy; hanging lets the weight stretch the shoulders over months. Lighter pieces can hang in a breathable cotton cover.

Professional dry cleaning only, and tell the cleaner about the embellishment before they begin. Steam from the reverse at a distance; never press an iron onto stones and sequins. Have any loose stone secured before it falls. Our Huishan Zhang fabric guide covers the cloths underneath.

Embellished dresses around the world

United States. The autumn gala season and New Year’s Eve are the peaks, and black tie invitations welcome full coverage.

United Kingdom. The Christmas party season runs from late November, and a shorter embellished dress with sleeves suits the cold and the dancing equally well.

Europe. Opera openings, Viennese winter balls and Mediterranean summer weddings all call for decoration, lighter in the warm months.

The Gulf (GCC). Weddings and Eid celebrations in the cooler months make the region the strongest market for fully worked gowns. Long sleeves and floor length suit modest dress codes, and decoration placed on a long column keeps coverage complete.

Frequently asked questions

What is an embellished dress?

An embellished dress is decorated with applied surface work such as crystals, sequins, beads, embroidery and feather trim. The work is added to the cloth by hand and machine. Its amount and placement decide how formal the dress is.

How many Huishan Zhang embellished dresses does Coveti carry?

Coveti holds 21 Huishan Zhang dresses and gowns whose names state the decoration (embellished, embroidered, sequins), from $1,050 to $9,430. The Vic Midi Dress and the Farah Mini Dress from Resort 2027 add crystal work not named in their titles.

Are embellished dresses heavy to wear?

Dense crystal and beading add noticeable weight, which hangs from the shoulders through an evening. Decoration placed at the neckline and waist is lighter to wear than an all over skirt, and feathers add almost no weight at all.

Can you wear an embellished dress to a wedding?

Yes, with restraint. Choose a soft colour and decoration placed at one point, such as the neckline, so the dress honours the occasion without competing with the couple. Keep full coverage and long sparkling gowns for evening receptions with a formal dress code.

How do you judge the quality of embellishment?

Check that the density is even across seams, that the decoration follows the cut of the dress, and that every stone and sequin sits firmly. Look inside for a clean lining.

How should an embellished dress be stored?

Heavily worked dresses are best stored flat in acid free tissue, because hanging lets the weight stretch the shoulders. Lighter pieces can hang on a padded hanger in a breathable cotton cover, away from plastic.
