Embroidered Dresses: Applique, 3D Florals and How to Choose

An embroidered dress carries its decoration in the cloth itself, in stitched thread, cut fabric petals and hand-sewn beads, which gives it texture and weight that a print cannot match; it suits weddings and events, and the things to check are the technique, the base fabric and the lining. Our designer dresses edit opens with the Leo Lin applique and embroidered dresses from Resort 2027, and our guide to what an applique dress is explains the craft in more depth.

Key facts

  • Embroidery is decoration stitched into fabric with thread, while applique is a cut fabric shape stitched onto the dress.
  • A 3D floral dress has layered petals that stand off the fabric surface.
  • The beaded floral embellishments on the Leo Lin Carina, Viola and Emmeline dresses take over 35 hours to sew by hand.
  • The Leo Lin Rayna Applique Bustier Maxi Dress has 3D hand-sewn floral applique embroidery and a boned bust.

Embroidery, applique and 3D florals: what the words mean

Embroidery is decoration stitched into a fabric with thread. Applique is a shape cut from one fabric and stitched onto another, so a petal sits on top of the base rather than inside it. A floral applique dress uses those cut shapes as flowers, and a 3D floral dress goes one step further: the petals are layered and lifted so they stand off the surface and catch light from the side.

Two other terms come up often. Laser cut applique has its edges cut and sealed by laser, which gives a crisp petal that will not fray, and suits linen and lighter fabrics. Beaded embellishment is the heaviest finish of all, with beads, pearls and crystals sewn into the motif by hand. The more of the work that is done by hand, the longer each dress takes: on several Leo Lin pieces the beading alone runs over 35 hours. Our Leo Lin applique dresses edit shows each technique in close-up.

How to choose an embroidered dress

  • Match the technique to the occasion. Laser cut applique on linen suits a daytime wedding; hand-sewn 3D florals and beading suit evening and black tie.
  • Check that the base can carry the weight. Heavy beading needs a firm cloth and support beneath: a boned bust, a structured bodice and a full lining.
  • Look at where the work sits. Embroidery placed at the bust and waist draws the eye in, scattered motifs over the skirt add movement, and an all-over finish makes the dress the whole outfit.
  • Think about the length. A 3D floral mini is playful, a midi works for most weddings, and a long embroidered gown belongs to evening.
  • Read the sizing. Structured, embroidered fabrics rarely stretch, so measure bust and waist against the size guide rather than guessing.

How we measured: fabric, lining, construction and the fit note come from Leo Lin’s own product pages, read on 6 November 2026. Sizes made are the sizes Leo Lin produces for each piece, as listed by Coveti in UK sizing.

Leo Lin sizes in AU, which matches UK sizing one for one: an AU 8 is a UK 8 and a US 4. Most pieces are designed true to size with no stretch in the structured fabrics, and the Claire knit cardigans run small, so size up there. Full conversions are in our Leo Lin size guide.

The rest of the drop gives more ways in. The Leo Lin Mila Applique Mini Dress in Teal has laser cut florals with bow detailing on a square neckline, the Leo Lin Caroline Applique Short Sleeve Midi Dress layers 3D handcrafted applique over laser cut embroidery in Periwinkle, and the Leo Lin Chloe Applique Sleeveless Mini Dress in Butter keeps it simple in pale yellow. The Leo Lin Aurelie Applique Short Sleeve Mini Dress in Rose puts its embroidery on the sleeves alone, and the Bianca in Teal repeats the linen and silk shirt dress in the deeper shade.

How to wear an embroidered dress

The rule is simple: the embroidery is the jewellery. With a 3D floral bodice like the Rayna, wear small earrings and nothing at the neck. With beading at the cuffs and skirt, as on the Carina, a bare wrist looks sharper than a stack of bracelets.

Keep accessories smooth. A satin heel, a plain leather clutch and a fine strap let the texture of the dress stand alone, while a beaded bag next to a beaded dress turns into noise. Pick up one colour from the flowers for the shoe if you want a link.

Layer with care. A structured blazer over a strapless embroidered dress works if its shoulders sit clear of the motif; the Leo Lin Lisa Applique Fitted Blazer in Rose carries its own laser cut florals and pairs naturally with the pink pieces. For weddings, our spring wedding guest dresses and black tie wedding guest dresses guides match length and finish to the invitation.

Embroidered dresses around the world

The US and the UK search for embroidered dresses more than anywhere else, followed by Germany and Australia. In the northern winter, embroidery suits the season of parties and black tie dinners: wool and silk pieces like the Cleo and the Carina hold their shape in the cold, and a long coat covers the journey.

In Europe the same pieces work at Christmas and New Year, and the linen Bianca styles come back for spring weddings in Italy and France. In Australia, summer brings garden weddings and races, where laser cut applique on linen breathes in the heat and 3D florals photograph well in bright sun.

In the Gulf, embroidered dresses are a natural fit for weddings, Eid and evening events in the cooler months. For modest dressing, the Leo Lin Emmeline Embellished Maxi Dress in Teal has a round neckline, short sleeves and hand-sewn beading over 35 hours; add a long-sleeve layer beneath and it covers fully. Coveti ships worldwide by DHL Express and FedEx.

Caring for an embroidered dress

Store beaded and 3D floral pieces flat, folded in acid-free tissue, so the weight of the work does not pull on the shoulders. Steam from the inside, never directly onto the petals, and leave cleaning to a specialist who handles embellishment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between embroidered and applique?

Embroidery is stitched into the fabric with thread, while applique is a separate piece of fabric cut into a shape and stitched onto the dress. Many dresses combine the two, as in Leo Lin’s laser cut embroidery with 3D floral applique.

What is a 3D floral dress?

A 3D floral dress has petals that stand off the surface of the fabric, built from layered applique and sometimes beading, so the flowers have depth and cast small shadows.

Can you wear an embroidered dress to a wedding?

Yes, an embroidered dress is one of the best wedding guest choices because it looks considered without relying on colour. Avoid white and ivory with heavy embroidery, which can read bridal.

How do you wash an embroidered dress?

Most embroidered and beaded dresses should be professionally cleaned. At home, spot clean only and steam from the reverse to protect the stitching.

Are embroidered dresses in style for 2027?

Yes. Hand-worked florals are central to Resort 2027 at Leo Lin, whose Sojourn drop builds most of its dresses around applique and embroidery.
