Fear of God vs Fear of God Essentials: What Is the Difference?

Fear of God and Fear of God Essentials come from the same designer, Jerry Lorenzo, and share the same muted colours and long, relaxed proportions. The difference is in the fabrics, the makers and the price. The main collection is made in small runs in the USA, Italy, Japan and Portugal. Essentials is the everyday line of fleece, jersey and nylon basics, made in larger runs and mostly imported. Coveti stocks both in the Fear of God collection.

Quick answer

  • Fear of God is the main collection: tailoring, Japanese denim, leather, American fleece and knitwear.
  • Fear of God Essentials, launched in 2018, is the accessible line: hoodies, sweatpants, tees and track pieces.
  • Both share a palette and a silhouette, so they mix easily in one wardrobe.

The main collection

Fear of God numbers its collections instead of naming seasons, and the current one builds on the ninth. It is where Lorenzo works with tailoring: the Double Weave Wool Crewneck Jacket and the Easy Care Wool Relaxed Lapelless Jacket are made in Italy, the Classic Trucker Jacket is Japanese denim, and the 09 Classic Hoodie is made in the USA from heavy American cotton fleece with hand-printed graphics. Essentials

Essentials took the most worn shapes from the main line and made them in larger runs. The Classic Hoodie, the Classic Sweatpant and the Classic Tee are the base of the line. Each season adds new fabrics, like the bonded nylon Signature Full Zip Track Jacket and the suede fleece Signature pieces, as well as licensed ranges with the NFL, MLB and NBA. Most Essentials pieces are marked final sale at the source.

Which should you buy?

For a hoodie and sweatpants you will wear every day, Essentials is the sensible choice. For a coat, a jacket, a pair of jeans and anything you want to keep for years, the main collection is worth the step up in fabric and make. The two work together: an Essentials hoodie under a main collection Mouline Wool Relaxed Trench Coat is a very Fear of God outfit.

How the sizing compares

Both lines are cut relaxed, but the main collection tailoring follows Italian sizes and the denim follows waist sizes. Essentials runs in letter sizes from XXS to 4XL depending on the style, and the main collection runs XS to XXXL, waist sizes 28 to 38 for denim and IT 44 to 56 for tailoring. See the Fear of God size guide for how each fit family wears.

How the two lines are made

The difference shows most in the labels. On the current main collection, the heavy fleece hoodies and sweatpants are made in the USA from American cotton, garment dyed and sun faded, with hand-printed graphics. The tailoring, the coats and the knits are made in Italy in virgin wool, wool cashmere double face and merino. The denim jackets and jeans are made in Japan, and some of the cotton rayon tees are made in Portugal. Essentials, by contrast, is made in larger runs and is mostly imported, in cotton and polyester fleece, cotton jersey and technical nylon.

How the two lines are designed

Both lines share the same long, relaxed silhouette and the same palette, and many Essentials shapes started life in the main collection. The difference is detail. A main collection hoodie has a sun faded finish and a hand-printed number; an Essentials hoodie has a rubber label and a soft-touch logo. A main collection track jacket comes in wool ripstop made in Italy; the Essentials version is bonded nylon. The main line also covers categories Essentials does not touch: tailored jackets, trench coats, leather bombers and Japanese denim.

The Fear of God palette

Part of what makes the brand easy to wear is that the colours are chosen to work together. Each season returns to a small set of neutrals: Black, Ink Black and Vintage Black; the heathers, Ash, Warm, Oatmeal and Concrete; the browns and taupes, Seal, Dune and Homestead; and creams like Dirty Ivory. One accent arrives each season, and for Fall Winter 2026 it is Night Sea, a deep teal. Because the shades are close, you can pair a hoodie from one season with sweatpants from another and they still look like a set.
