Fusalp vs Perfect Moment: Annecy Tailoring Meets Chamonix Free-Ride

Fusalp and Perfect Moment both have French Alpine roots, but they come from different eras and moods. Fusalp was founded in Annecy in 1952 by two tailors and built its name on the fitted fuseau ski trouser. Perfect Moment began in Chamonix in 1984 as kit for free-ride skiers and surfers. Coveti stocks the Fusalp collection within women’s skiwear.

Where do the two brands come from?

Fusalp is the older house by more than three decades. Georges Ribola and Rene Veyrat were tailors and keen skiers, and their name for the brand joins “fuseau” with “Alpes”. They did not invent the stretch ski trouser, which existed in the 1930s, but they made it at scale and improved it with pre-formed padded knees and elastic side panels. Fusalp then worked with the French Ski Federation to dress the national teams, with champions such as Jean-Claude Killy and the Goitschel sisters wearing the brand in the 1960s.

Perfect Moment’s story is younger and looser. Thierry Donard, a skier and filmmaker, started making clothes in Chamonix in 1984 for the free-ride skiers and surfers on his team. In 2010 Jane and Max Gottschalk took ownership, and Jane later led the creative direction. The company is now based in London.

The difference shows in the clothes. Fusalp is rooted in racing and tailoring. Perfect Moment is rooted in free-ride culture and a bolder sense of shape.

How do the looks compare?

Fusalp’s line is close and clean. The house credits itself with inventing bi-stretch fabric and a three-layer softshell, and its product copy calls the V-shaped contrast stripe “a House signature”. Most of the ski jackets and pants we stock are cut close to the body, with a few oversized down pieces for contrast. Artistic Director Mathilde Lacoste runs the Paris tailoring workshop, so the cut comes first.

Perfect Moment points to its Polar Flare Jacket and its flared ski pants, including the Aurora Flare Ski Pant, as the pieces that define it. The flare is the giveaway: a seventies-leaning silhouette that reads as fashion from the chairlift. If you love that shape, our guide to flare ski pants covers it in depth.

In short, Fusalp suits the woman who wants a slim, graphic outline with a racing past. Perfect Moment suits the woman who wants flares and a louder silhouette. Neither is the wrong answer.

Which Fusalp pieces should a Perfect Moment fan try?

If you are crossing over, start with pieces that have a clear shape and a bit of colour:

The Auphea and Pixilae pairing in Cotton Candy is the one I’d point a Perfect Moment fan towards first. It has the colour without losing the Fusalp line.

How warm and weatherproof is Fusalp?

Fusalp grades its outerwear on its own 5-point warmth scale. Only level 5 carries a temperature claim, protection against deep cold down to -30 degrees Celsius. Levels 1 to 4 have no published temperature. Many ski pieces also use a Fusalp-approved membrane that keeps them waterproof, windproof and breathable, and the brand does not publish millimetre ratings. Our Fusalp warmth levels explained guide lists which styles sit at each level. We have not compared Perfect Moment’s own technical claims here, so check each product page on its hub.

How does Fusalp sizing work?

Fusalp cuts women’s ski and outerwear in French sizes 34 to 44, which Coveti lists as UK 6 to 16. A Fusalp 38 is a UK 10. Most styles run true to size; where a size falls between two, Fusalp suggests taking the larger one. Ski suits and pants are cut close, so measure against your usual fitted trousers. The full conversion, including US and Italian sizes, is in our Fusalp size guide.

Fusalp UK US (lower body) IT
34 6 2 38
36 8 4 40
38 10 6 42
40 12 8 44
42 14 10 46
44 16 12 48

Who should choose which?

  • Choose Fusalp for a tailored, close-fitting silhouette, the fuseau ski pant and a house with competition history going back to 1966.
  • Choose Perfect Moment for flares, bold colour and a look born in Chamonix free-ride culture.
  • Mix them: a Fusalp base layer and knit work under any shell, and a fitted Fusalp jacket balances a wide flared pant.
