How to Style a Tassel Belt: Five Ways to Tie It

A tassel belt is a braided cord that ties rather than buckles, finished with a tassel at each end. It is softer than a leather belt and more decorative, and it does one job well: it puts a waist into a dress, a jacket, a cardigan, without the hard line of a buckle. These are five ways to tie one, with the Alessandra Rich torchon belt as the example, and what to wear it with.

Key facts

  • What it is: a braided cord, usually viscose, silk and cotton, knotted at the waist with tasselled ends.
  • Sizing: a tie belt is forgiving; the size changes the length of the tails more than the fit.
  • Example: the Alessandra Rich torchon belt, viscose with a gold-tone AR charm, in 4 colours, $420 to $420 at Coveti.
  • Best over: fluid silk, taffeta, knitwear and soft tailoring.
  • Care: store untied so the braid keeps its twist; comb the tassels through with your fingers.

1. The single knot at the waist

Wrap the cord once around the natural waist, tie a single knot at the front, just off-centre, and let both tassels hang. It is the house way with a floral taffeta dress, and the simplest.

2. The double wrap

For a longer cord, wrap twice and knot. Two strands read stronger and pull the waist in more, which suits a loose silk dress and a shirt dress.

3. The low knot over a jacket

Tie it over a tweed jacket, like a long cardigan, slightly below the waist, and leave the tassels long. It turns a straight jacket into a waisted one, the way the house belts its tweed.

4. The bow

Tie it in a loose bow rather than a knot. A bow is softer and suits pastel taffeta and lace; keep the loops small so the tassels still hang.

5. The side knot

Move the knot to the hip and let the tassels fall along the side seam. It works on a column dress and a slip dress, and it breaks up a block of colour without adding bulk at the front.

Colour

Match the belt to one colour in the print, the way the house matches a pink torchon to the pink flowers in its floral taffeta. Go for contrast instead: a black torchon over ivory, gold over black. The belts guide has every colour.

Frequently asked questions

How do you tie a tassel belt?

Wrap it once around the natural waist and tie a single knot at the front, letting both tassels hang. For more definition, wrap it twice.

What do you wear a tassel belt with?

Fluid silk dresses, taffeta, knitwear, shirt dresses and soft jackets. It is softer than a leather belt, so it suits soft fabrics.

What size tassel belt should I buy?

Take your usual size letter. A tie belt is forgiving; a size up gives longer tails, a size down shorter ones.

What is a torchon belt?

A belt made of a twisted, braided cord, tied in a knot rather than closed with a buckle.

Can you wear a tassel belt over a coat?

Over a soft coat, like a long cardigan, yes; over a heavy structured coat the cord can look too slight.

How do you store a tassel belt?

Untied and loosely coiled in its dust bag, so the braid keeps its twist and the tassels do not tangle.
