How to Wear Clip-On Earrings Comfortably (and Make Them Stay On)

Clip-on earrings have come back with the 1980s mood in fashion, and the statement pairs are clip-ons almost by default: a large crystal, like a pearl fringe, is easier to carry on a clip than on a single post. They do take a little technique. This is how to place them, how long to wear them, what to do when they pinch and slide, and how to style a statement pair, with the Alessandra Rich FW26 clip-ons as the worked example.

Key facts

  • Placement: the clip pad sits on the fleshy centre of the lobe, not the edge.
  • Comfort: most people are fine for an evening; for a full day, take them off for a few minutes every few hours.
  • Pinching: a thin silicone cushion over the clip pad softens the pressure without loosening the grip.
  • Slipping: move the clip higher on the lobe, nearer the face, where the lobe is thicker.
  • Statement pairs at Coveti: 11 Alessandra Rich clip-ons from $530 to $1,000.

How to put on a clip-on earring

Open the clip fully. Place the front of the earring where a piercing would sit, slightly towards the face, and close the clip so the pad rests on the back of the lobe. Check the angle in a mirror: a drop should hang straight down, and a large front should face forward rather than tilt. If it tilts, move it a few millimetres up the lobe.

How long can you wear them?

Clip pressure is the whole mechanism, so some awareness after a few hours is normal. For a dinner, like a wedding, most people wear them throughout. For a full working day, take them off for a few minutes in the afternoon and put them back on slightly higher, slightly lower, so the pressure lands on a fresh spot.

When they pinch

Pinching usually means the clip sits too near the edge of the lobe, where it is thin. Move it inward. If it still pinches, a thin clear silicone cushion over the pad spreads the pressure. Do not bend the clip open to loosen it: the metal fatigues and the earring will start to fall off.

When they slip

Slipping means the lobe is thin where the clip sits, unless the earring is front-heavy. Move it higher, towards the face. For a long drop, check that the weight hangs below the clip, not in front of it. A silicone cushion also adds grip.

Choosing a statement pair

Choose by neckline. With a high neck, a collar, a buttoned jacket, wear a large front: a round crystal, a stepped gold-tone frame. With an open neck and an off-shoulder dress, wear a drop, like a fringe, which fills the space. The Alessandra Rich earrings cover both, and they are all clip-on.

Styling them

Treat a statement clip-on as the only jewellery: no necklace with a big pair, a small ring at most. Wear the hair back, tucked, so the earring is seen. A pair of gold-tone crystal clip-ons with a polka-dot silk dress is the Alessandra Rich look in one move; the polka-dot dresses are the partner pieces.

Frequently asked questions

Do clip-on earrings hurt?

They should not hurt. Some pressure after a few hours is normal; real pain means the clip sits on the thin edge of the lobe. Move it inward, and use a silicone cushion if you need one.

How do you keep clip-on earrings from falling off?

Place the clip higher on the lobe, nearer the face, where it is thicker, and keep the weight of a drop hanging below the clip. Do not bend the clip.

Can you wear clip-on earrings with pierced ears?

Yes. Place the clip so the front covers the piercing, just above it.

How long can you wear clip-on earrings?

An evening comfortably. For a full day, take a short break every few hours and reposition the clip slightly.

Are clip-on earrings back in fashion?

Yes. Large statement clip-ons are central to the 1980s-leaning mood in jewellery, and houses including Alessandra Rich make their whole earring line as clip-ons.

Can a jeweller adjust a clip that is too tight?

A jeweller can sometimes adjust the tension, but bending it yourself fatigues the metal. Try a silicone cushion first.
