Merino Wool Tops and Tanks: The Year-Round Layer

Merino wool tops are fine-knit layers made from the wool of merino sheep, and they work all year: alone as a tank in summer heat, and under a coat once it turns cold. St. Agni knits 33 merino pieces for Coveti’s designer tops and knitwear edits, all in RWS-certified merino, and the most useful of them is the Superfine Merino Wool Tank in Black, a ribbed, second-skin tank with fine straps.

Key Facts

  • All 33 St. Agni merino pieces at Coveti are RWS merino: most are 100% merino wool, and some use a 90% merino and 10% cashmere blend.
  • RWS is the Responsible Wool Standard from Textile Exchange, a voluntary standard covering animal welfare and land management on sheep farms, with chain-of-custody tracking.
  • St. Agni’s merino tops are made in China by manufacturers that have signed the St. Agni Code of Conduct.
  • Most styles are sized XXS to XL; the Superfine Merino Wool Cardigan runs XS to L.
  • “Merino wool top” gets about 2,900 searches a month worldwide, and the UK accounts for about 43 per cent of it in clickstream data.

Why Merino Works as a Top

Merino is a fine wool, and fine fibres feel soft enough to sit directly against the skin, which coarser wools often do not. The Woolmark Company, the wool industry’s own body, says merino absorbs moisture vapour and moves it away from the body to evaporate, and that it reacts to changes in body temperature. In plain terms, a thin merino tank can feel comfortable in more conditions than a cotton one, and it can be worn more than once between washes.

That makes it a good buy for anyone dressing across two seasons. In Australia and New Zealand it is the start of summer, and a merino tank is a layer for cool mornings and air-conditioned offices. In the UK, Europe and North America, the same tank goes under a shirt and a coat.

The St. Agni Merino Edit

St. Agni’s merino style names use three labels: Superfine, Fine and Baby Wool. The brand does not publish micron counts for these names, so treat them as a guide to feel rather than a technical grade.

Merino Tanks and Camis

Tanks and camis make up ten of the 33 merino pieces, and they are the ones to buy first.

Superfine Merino Wool Tank

A scooped neckline, thin straps and a ribbed body, shaped close to the skin. It comes in Black and Talco, a warm off-white. Wear it alone with tailored trousers, also under a sheer shirt.

Merino Wool Slim Tank

The Merino Wool Slim Tank in Vapor adds 10% cashmere to the merino, with a squared neckline and a rolled neck and hem. The cashmere gives it a softer hand. It also comes in Charcoal Melange.

Baby Wool Scoop Cami

The Baby Wool Scoop Cami in Black has a low scooped neckline and a fitted cut. It sits lower at the front than the tank, so it shows more of a necklace and works well under an open cardigan.

Fine Merino Halter Top

The only relaxed tank in the group. The Fine Merino Halter Top in Black has a halter v-neckline with a centre-front seam. It is a good choice for evening in a warm climate. Our guide to halter maxi dresses covers the necklines in more depth.

Merino Tees and Long Sleeves

Fine Merino Wool Baby Tee

A crew neck and a waist length, cut slim. The Fine Merino Wool Baby Tee in Charcoal Melange is the merino answer to a cotton tee: it tucks into high-rise pants and sits neatly over low-rise ones.

Deep V Knit Tee

The Deep V Knit Tee in Black has a deep v-neckline and cap sleeves, and the brand designs it to be worn either way round. One top, two necklines.

Superfine Merino Wool Long Sleeve Top

For colder months, the Superfine Merino Wool Long Sleeve Top in Talco has a bateau neckline and a ribbed body, fitted. It is thin enough to layer under a coat without bulk.

Merino Cardigans and Sweaters

The Superfine Merino Wool Cardigan in Black is boxy and relaxed, with a crew neck, a button front and ribbed cuffs and hem. It is sized XS to L, so check the size chart. For a slimmer line, the Fine Merino V Neck Sweater in Mulch has a v-neckline and a long sleeve, cut slim through the body.

How to Care for Merino Tops

Follow the care label on each piece first. As a general rule, fine merino knits are washed cool and gently, by hand where the label allows, with a wool detergent. Do not wring them. Press out the water in a towel and dry them flat, away from direct heat and sun, so they keep their shape. Fold, never hang: a hanger stretches the shoulders of a fine knit. Airing a merino top between wears often means it needs washing less.

How to Build a Merino Wardrobe

Start with one tank in a dark colour and one in a light colour. Add a baby tee, then a cardigan. Those four pieces cover most of a year. The summer capsule wardrobe shows how a merino tank fits into fifteen warm-weather pieces, and our wider capsule wardrobe guide covers the full year. Frequently Asked Questions

Can you wear merino wool in summer?

Yes. Fine merino is light, and The Woolmark Company says it absorbs moisture vapour and moves it away from the body to evaporate. A thin merino tank is a practical summer layer, especially for cool mornings and air-conditioned rooms.

What does RWS merino mean?

RWS stands for the Responsible Wool Standard, a voluntary standard from the non-profit Textile Exchange. It covers animal welfare and land management on sheep farms and tracks certified wool through the supply chain. All 33 St. Agni merino pieces at Coveti use RWS merino.

How do you wash a merino wool top?

Always follow the care label first. Fine merino is generally washed cool and gently with a wool detergent, then pressed in a towel and dried flat away from heat. Store it folded rather than on a hanger.

Do St. Agni merino tops fit close to the body?

Most do. The Superfine Merino Wool Tank, Merino Wool Slim Tank and Baby Wool Scoop Cami are described as fitted, and the baby tees as slim. The Fine Merino Halter Top and the Superfine Merino Wool Cardigan are cut relaxed.

Is merino wool itchy?

Merino is a fine wool, and fine fibres generally feel softer against the skin than coarser wools. Sensitivity varies from person to person, so a fitted tank worn directly on the skin is the best test. St. Agni also blends some styles with 10% cashmere for a softer hand.
