Needle and Thread Size Guide: UK, EU, US Sizes, Fit and Length
Needle and Thread uses UK sizing: a UK 10 fits an 88cm bust, 70cm waist and 97cm hip, and converts to EU 38, IT 42, AU 10 and US 6. Most gowns are form fitted through the bodice with a full skirt, so choose your size by bust and waist rather than hip. The brand’s model is 175cm and wears a UK 10, and Coveti stocks UK 4 to UK 18.
A fitted bodice is unforgiving if you guess, so this Needle and Thread size guide sets out the brand’s own measurements, the international conversions, how each silhouette fits and what each length means on a real body. Measure yourself first, in your underwear, with a soft tape held level.
What is the Needle and Thread size chart?
These are the brand’s body measurements. They describe the body the garment is made for, not the flat measurement of the dress. Inches are converted from centimetres and rounded to one decimal place.
| UK | EU | IT | AU | US | Bust (cm / in) | Waist (cm / in) | Hip (cm / in) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 32 | 36 | 4 | 0 | 78 / 30.7 | 60 / 23.6 | 87 / 34.3 |
| 6 | 34 | 38 | 6 | 2 | 80.5 / 31.7 | 62.5 / 24.6 | 89.5 / 35.2 |
| 8 | 36 | 40 | 8 | 4 | 83 / 32.7 | 65 / 25.6 | 92 / 36.2 |
| 10 | 38 | 42 | 10 | 6 | 88 / 34.6 | 70 / 27.6 | 97 / 38.2 |
| 12 | 40 | 44 | 12 | 8 | 93 / 36.6 | 75 / 29.5 | 102 / 40.2 |
| 14 | 42 | 46 | 14 | 10 | 98 / 38.6 | 80 / 31.5 | 107 / 42.1 |
| 16 | 44 | 48 | 16 | 12 | 103 / 40.6 | 85 / 33.5 | 112 / 44.1 |
| 18 | 46 | 50 | 18 | 14 | 110 / 43.3 | 92 / 36.2 | 119 / 46.9 |
The conversion rules are simple. EU size is the UK size plus 28, so UK 10 is EU 38. Italian size is UK plus 32, so UK 10 is IT 42. Australian sizing matches UK. US sizing is usually UK minus 4, so UK 10 is US 6. The brand makes up to UK 24; Coveti offers UK 4 to UK 18.
How do the sizes step up?
The steps are not even, and this is the detail most people miss. From UK 4 to UK 8 the bust and waist rise by 2.5cm per size. From UK 8 to UK 16 they rise by 5cm per size. From UK 16 to UK 18 the bust rises by 7cm and the waist by 7cm.
So if you are a UK 6 and a UK 8 by your high street measurements, the difference in a Needle and Thread bodice is small and either will usually close. If you are between a 10 and a 12, the difference is a full 5cm at the bust, and the wrong choice will show. Measure; do not rely on what you wear elsewhere.
How do you measure yourself for Needle and Thread?
- Bust: around the fullest part of the chest, tape level across the back. Wear the bra you plan to wear with the gown, because a strapless bra can change the measurement.
- Waist: around the narrowest part of the torso, usually just above the navel. Breathe out normally.
- Hip: around the fullest part of the seat, feet together.
- Height: barefoot, then note the heel height you plan to wear. You will need both for the length guide below.
How does Needle and Thread fit by silhouette?
The brand uses a short list of fit descriptions, and they tell you which measurement to prioritise.
“Form fitted through the bodice”. This is most of the gowns. The bodice sits close to the body from bust to waist. Choose by bust first, then check the waist. Corseted styles such as the Amaya Shimmer Gown in Soft Peony and the Amaya Shimmer Long Sleeve Gown in Jet Black have an internal power-mesh corset, so they are the least forgiving at the waist.
“Fitted waist with a multi layered skirt”. Full tulle skirts like the Thalia Off-Shoulder Gown in Navy and the Thalia Cami Ankle Gown in Soft Peony have huge room at the hip. Ignore your hip measurement here unless it is more than two sizes above your bust and waist.
Off-shoulder necklines. The Thalia Off-Shoulder Gown in Ribbon Red sits across the upper arm. If you have broad shoulders and strong arms, the bust and waist still decide the size, but try the gown with your arms raised before the event.
“Relaxed fit through the sleeve”. Some long-sleeve and cape-sleeve styles have room in the arm. The Lea Ditsy Cape Sleeve Ankle Gown in Jet Black / Multi and the Clover Cape Sleeve Ankle Gown in Garnet have cape sleeves that float rather than grip.
Cowl necks and drapes. The satin and sequin cowl neck gowns, such as the Evangeline Sequin Cowl Neck Gown in Black, hang from the shoulder and skim the body. They are often the easiest Needle and Thread pieces to size if you are between sizes.
Jackets and blouses. The Jet Embellished Jacket in Moonbeam / Silver and the Jet Frill Blouse in Soft Peony / Silver follow the same chart. Go by bust, and remember you may wear the jacket over a knit.
What do Needle and Thread lengths mean?
The brand uses four length names. Each is described on the house model, who is 175cm (about 5ft 9in).
- Floor length: touches the floor on the model in flat feet. Below 170cm you will need a heel of 7cm to 10cm, and a hem may still pool slightly, which is fine on a full tulle skirt.
- Ankle length: ends at the ankle bone on the model. Most of the gowns, including the Constellation Ankle Gown in Navy and the Lily Bloom Ankle Gown in Navy, are ankle length. On someone of 160cm it will sit closer to the floor, and a block heel keeps it off the ground.
- Ballerina: mid calf. Pieces such as the Rococo Ribbon Cami Ballerina Dress in Chalk are the label’s tea-length option. Shorter wearers should expect it to land below mid calf.
- Mini: above the knee. Rare in the evening line.
How do you choose between two sizes?
Use this order of priority.
- Bust first in a fitted bodice. You can take a bodice in; you cannot let out a seam that has been sewn with beading over it.
- Waist second in a corseted style. If your bust says UK 10 and your waist says UK 12, take the 12 and have the bust adjusted.
- Hip last, almost always. Multi-layered skirts give plenty of room.
- Consider the bra. A strapless bra with a firm band sits differently from an everyday bra. Measure in the one you will wear.
- Alterations on embellished pieces need a specialist. A tailor will need to move beads and sequins away from a seam and replace them. Spare beads and sequins are available on request from the brand.
How does Needle and Thread compare with other sizing?
Needle and Thread is a UK label, and its chart uses UK sizes as the base. If you usually buy in EU sizes, add 28 to the UK size. If you shop in US sizes, subtract 4. An American size 8 is therefore a Needle and Thread UK 12, with a 93cm bust.
Some labels size their eveningwear generously so a fitted bodice still closes on a slightly larger body. This chart does not. A UK 10 is cut for a 70cm waist. If you are used to high street sizing that has drifted larger over the years, measure again before ordering.

Frequently asked questions
What size is a UK 10 in Needle and Thread?
A Needle and Thread UK 10 fits an 88cm bust (34.6in), a 70cm waist (27.6in) and a 97cm hip (38.2in). It converts to EU 38, IT 42, AU 10 and US 6. The brand’s house model is 175cm tall and wears a UK 10, so product photographs show how a 10 looks on a tall frame.
Does Needle and Thread run true to size?
Needle and Thread runs true to its own size chart, which is slim through the bodice. Most gowns are form fitted from bust to waist with a full multi-layered skirt. Measure your bust and waist and compare with the chart rather than relying on your usual high street size, especially between UK 8 and UK 16.
What is Needle and Thread US sizing?
US sizing is usually the UK size minus 4. A Needle and Thread UK 8 is a US 4, a UK 10 is a US 6 and a UK 12 is a US 8. Coveti offers UK 4 to UK 18, which is US 0 to US 14. Check the bust and waist in centimetres for the most accurate fit.
Should I size up in Needle and Thread?
Size up when your waist sits in a larger size than your bust in a corseted style such as the Amaya Shimmer, because the waist cannot be let out easily. When you are between sizes in a fitted bodice, the larger size can be taken in by a tailor. Full tulle skirts rarely need a size change for the hip.
How long are Needle and Thread ankle gowns?
Ankle gowns are cut to end at the ankle bone on the house model, who is 175cm. On someone shorter the hem will sit lower, close to the floor, so a block heel helps keep it clean. On someone taller the hem will sit a little higher. Floor-length styles touch the ground on the model.
What sizes does Needle and Thread make?
The brand makes sizes up to UK 24. Coveti offers Needle and Thread in UK 4 to UK 18, which is EU 32 to EU 46, IT 36 to IT 50 and US 0 to US 14. Sizes step by 2.5cm at the bust from UK 4 to UK 8 and by 5cm from UK 8 to UK 16.
