Rebecca Vallance Size Guide: AU, UK and Denim Sizing

Rebecca Vallance sizing is more straightforward than most Australian labels, with one exception that catches people out. The dresses and tailoring run on Australian sizing, which maps directly onto UK sizing. The denim does not, and is sold by inch waist instead. Here is the whole picture.

Which sizing does Rebecca Vallance use?

Australian sizing, and it uses the same numbers as UK sizing. An AU 8 is a UK 8, an AU 10 is a UK 10, and so on up the ladder. If you know your UK size you can order without converting anything.

Letter sizing

A few pieces are sold in letter sizes rather than numbers. An XS covers a bust of 80 to 88cm, an S covers 84 to 93cm, an M covers 89 to 98cm, and an L covers 94 to 103cm.

Rebecca Vallance denim sizing

This is the part worth reading twice. Denim is sold by inch waist, running 24 to 32, and those numbers are not dress sizes. The conversion is below.

So a UK 8 takes a 26, and a UK 12 takes a 30. Between two inch sizes, the cotton has a small stretch content and will give slightly at the waistband, so the smaller of the two is usually right.

Does Rebecca Vallance run true to size?

The brand states that its pieces fit true to size, and that is the guidance printed on each product. Our own read is that this holds for the relaxed shapes and needs a caveat on the fitted ones.

The caveat is construction. Many Rebecca Vallance styles are fully lined, boned through the bodice, and cut in cloths with little stretch, such as boucle tweed and jacquard. A fitted bodice in a rigid cloth has nowhere to give, so if you are between sizes there, size to your largest measurement and have the waist taken in. Taking in a waist is a twenty minute job. Letting out a boned bodice is not.

For the bias-cut gowns the opposite applies. Bias cutting is forgiving through the hip and tends to fit a wider range of bodies than the measurements suggest.

How to measure

Measure your bust at the fullest point with the tape level. Measure your natural waist at the narrowest part of the torso, usually just above the navel. Measure your hip at the fullest point, roughly 20cm below the waist. Keep the tape snug and do not pull it tight.
