Who Is Jonathan Simkhai? The American Designer Who Built His Name on Construction

Ask most people to name an American eveningwear designer and they will reach for a New York name from the nineties. Jonathan Simkhai is the answer from a different generation, and the reason his clothes keep turning up on red carpets has less to do with fashion moments than with how the things are built.

From Parsons to a shared Fashion Fund

Simkhai trained at Parsons School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology, then showed his first womenswear line in New York City and founded his label in 2010. He was an early inductee to the CFDA Incubator, the programme the Council of Fashion Designers of America runs to give young labels studio space and mentoring at the point where most of them fail.

The turn came in 2015. The CFDA and Vogue named him a winner of the Fashion Fund, and did something they had never done in the prize’s twelve year history: they split it three ways. Simkhai shared the award with Aurora James of Brother Vellies and Rio Uribe of Gypsy Sport, and each of the three took $300,000 and a year of mentoring. Three equal winners was a deliberate statement by the selection committee about how many directions American fashion was moving in at once.

The move west

In 2018 he moved the studio from New York to Los Angeles. Designers talk about relocation in terms of light and pace, and the cliche happens to be visible in the clothes. The tailoring loosened after the move. The daywear got easier and more cotton entered the collections. What did not soften was the eveningwear, which kept its structure and arguably got more severe.

What the house actually makes

The studio describes its work as the elevated everyday, built with progressive construction techniques and intimate hand detailing, drawing on architects and sculptors. The client list is Hollywood rather than street style, which suits a house built on eveningwear. Kaley Cuoco wore Simkhai to the 2026 Critics Choice Awards, in an oversized black satin blazer with wide leg satin trousers, styled as an homage to Jennifer Aniston’s 2002 Golden Globes look. Elizabeth Banks wore a pre-fall 2026 column to the Los Angeles premiere of The Miniature Wife. Naomi Watts has worn the label for years.

In December 2025 the house cast Juliette Lewis in a holiday short film called Dear Juliette, in which she wears the Dakota Gown and narrates a letter from a secret admirer. Casting a character actress with thirty years of credits rather than a model tells you something about who the brand thinks it dresses.

Is it a luxury brand?
