Alémais Wedding Guest Dresses: What to Wear to a Black-Tie, Garden, City and Beach Wedding

The one rule for wearing Alémais as a guest

One print, and everything else plain. An Alémais dress carries a hand-drawn artwork, an embroidery, a beaded motif, sometimes all three, so it does the work of the whole outfit. Shoes in one colour, a bag with no pattern, and a single piece of gold jewellery. A second print anywhere, a printed shoe, a patterned bag, a scarf, turns a considered outfit into a busy one. The second rule is the ordinary one. Do not wear white, ivory and cream unless the couple has asked for it. Alémais makes beautiful cream-ground pieces, and the new Giddy Embroidered Midi Dress is one of them, but a pale ground reads as a pale dress from across a marquee. Keep those for the rehearsal dinner.

Black-tie wedding

Floor length, and a covered shoulder if the ceremony is in a church. Three current gowns meet the code.

Earle Embellished Gown, $1,400. New this week. A fitted, asymmetrical column in deep green silk velvet with a mock neck, a one-shoulder cape overlay, a cut-out at the waist and a beaded and embroidered rodeo motif. The velvet carries an evening wedding in autumn and winter better than any silk in the range.

Adeline Drape Gown, $890. Chocolate jacquard with the damask woven tone on tone, off the shoulder on an adjustable halter band, with a draped hip and a side split. This is the Alémais gown with no print, and the one for a guest whose wardrobe is quiet.

Jimi Gown, $1,660. Metallic velvet burnout with a high neck, short sleeves and a detachable cape that buttons at the shoulder. Cape on for the ceremony, cape off for the dance floor.

City and cocktail wedding

Knee to midi length, a shape with some structure, and a heel you can stand in for the drinks reception.

Dillon Applique Halter Gown, $790. A halter gown with beaded appliqué across the fitted bodice and an open back. It is called a gown but it wears like a cocktail dress, and it is the best value handwork in the range.

Francine Midi Dress, $890. A fitted sweetheart bodice with embellished beaded straps and an empire waist. The most obviously dressed-up midi Alémais currently makes.

Clem Ruched Midi Dress, $690. A fitted midi in recycled viscose jersey with a mock neck and a ruched bodice. The jersey has stretch, so it is the one to choose if you want a fitted line without a fitting.

Eddie Midi Dress, $790. Fitted, with an off-centre V-neck, asymmetrical cap sleeves with shoulder pads, in the same stretch jersey. Wear it with a pointed heel and nothing at the neck.

Paula Gown, $890. A sculpted strapless gown with a structured skirt and a front split, if the invitation reads cocktail but the venue reads formal.

Garden and daytime wedding

This is where Alémais is at its best. Linen, a print, a length that clears the grass, and a flat sandal.

Kenny Mini Dress, $690. Karlee Mackie’s folk floral in deep red and cream on a viscose and linen cloth, with a mock neck, full flared sleeves and appliqué detailing, cut relaxed. The single most useful Alémais dress for a daytime wedding.

Banderra Midi Dress, $770. A cream floral placement print with stripe borders on navy European linen, fitted through the bodice with an empire waist and short puff sleeves. It reads as a navy dress from a distance, which makes it the Alémais for a guest who does not wear colour.

Ezra Midi Dress, $790. A fitted bodice with a V-neck, self-covered buttons and a button chain at the front, in European linen and viscose printed with a Western toile in rust and cream on burgundy. Autumn garden weddings.

Outrider Seersucker Midi Dress, $680. A fitted midi in cotton seersucker with short puff sleeves and a V-neck with a rosette. Seersucker does not crease, which matters on a long day.

Scout Midi Dress, $970. A layered boat neckline, full bishop sleeves with pleats and tall cuffs, and a yoke waist, in European linen and viscose. The covered option for a garden wedding with a church service first.

Carrie Mini Dress, $590. Fitted and sleeveless, with an exaggerated ruffle along the side seams and shoulders, in a linen, cotton and silk jacquard with a ditsy floral in gold and pale blue on cream. Spring and summer only, and with a sandal, not a heel.

Beach and destination wedding

Cloth first. Linen, ramie and cotton breathe in heat, travel folded in a suitcase and shake out in a hotel bathroom. Silk does none of those things.

Autumn and winter wedding

Velvet, wool and lace. The Fall 2026 collection is the first Alémais season built for cold weather, and the pieces below are the ones to take to a wedding between October and March.

Earle Embellished Mini Dress, $890. New this week. A relaxed silk velvet mini in deep forest green with a round neck, a low draped back, full bishop sleeves with self-covered button cuffs and beaded Western motifs. Wear it with a tall boot and a coat.

Lasso Patchwork Knit Dress, $770. A fitted sleeveless patchwork knit midi in responsibly sourced wool with contrast whipstitching and extended ties down the sides. A knit dress for a wedding sounds wrong until you see this one.

Winifred Lace Mini Dress, $1,400. A relaxed mini with a V-neck, a layered ruffle lace trim and sheer full-length balloon sleeves with buttoned cuffs. Winter evening weddings.

Joanna Midi Dress, $790. A fitted ruched midi in recycled viscose jersey with padded shoulders and gathered cap sleeves. Under a coat it works from a November registry office to a March marquee.

Shoes, bags and jewellery

Alémais styles its own campaigns with a flat leather slide, a tall boot and a heeled sandal, and those three cover every wedding on this page. Garden and beach take the slide and the sandal. City and black tie take the heel. Autumn takes the boot. The bag is small and plain, and the jewellery is one gold piece, at the ear rather than the neck when the dress has a mock neck and at the wrist when it does not.

Alémais recommends your usual size on every style and states the intended shape on the product page.
