By Malina wedding dresses are clean-lined lace and satin gowns from the Stockholm label’s bridal collection, with gowns in the Coveti edit from $2,210 to $3,470. The line also includes short dresses for the civil ceremony and the after party, pearl embellished bridal separates and four veils.

Bridal is where By Malina started. Founder Malin Ek Andrén began by making her own pieces for weddings and parties, and the bridal collection still feels like it was designed by someone who has been a guest at a lot of weddings and knows what works in the room. This guide sorts the collection by silhouette, so you can shortlist quickly.

The By Malina bridal look

The house style is restrained. You will not find layers of tulle and heavy beading here. Instead, the gowns rely on three things: a lustrous satin with a clean surface, a single strong detail such as a cowl back, a detachable scarf and a row of dressed buttons, and a close fit through the body. The lace gowns use a delicate floral lace with long lines rather than a full skirt.

Most gowns are made in Guangdong Province, China. Most of the satin gowns use a recycled polyester shell with a viscose and rayon lining, and almost all are dry clean only.

Lace gowns

There are two lace gowns in the edit, and they sit near the top of the bridal price range.

  • Leonore Gown in Ivory, from $3,270: long sleeves, a high neckline, an open back and a train, in a cotton, nylon and rayon floral lace. This is the most covered gown in the collection, and the open back keeps it from feeling formal in the wrong way.
  • Emelina Gown in Ivory, from $3,270: the same lace with a halterneck, an open back, a fitted waist and a train. Choose this one for a summer wedding.

The Blanca Gown, from $2,210, sits between lace and satin: an A-line dress with scalloped lace details, lace cap sleeves and a deep V open back trimmed in lace.

Satin gowns with a train

This is the largest group, and the one most brides shortlist from.

  • Thelma Gown in Cream, from $2,210: a satin gown with a deep V neckline, an open back, a fitted waist and a train. It is the simplest shape in the collection and the easiest to accessorise.
  • Hermine Gown in Cream, from $2,630: long sleeves, a boat neckline, a deep cowl back and button detailing along the sleeves, finished with a sweeping train. From the front it is quiet, and the back carries the drama.
  • Josephine Gown in Cream, from $2,410: a structured corset with a draped bodice, detachable sleeves and a sweeping train. Take the sleeves off for the evening and it becomes a second dress.

Also in this group: the Zelda Gown, a strapless satin gown with a detachable neck scarf; the Audrey Gown, from $3,470, which is strapless with a dropped waist and a detachable neck scarf; the Alivia Gown, with a draped high neckline; and the Louise Gown, with draped shoulders and back and an A-line skirt.

Mermaid and fitted silhouettes

If you want a gown that follows the body to the knee before it flares, look at these three.

  • Carmen Gown in Ivory, from $2,210: a square neckline front and back, long sleeves with a slight pouf at the shoulder, a mermaid silhouette and dressed buttons down the back and sleeves.

The Leia Gown, from $2,210, is an off shoulder mermaid gown with a small train. The Mathilde Gown pairs a mermaid line with balloon sleeves and wide cuffs finished in dressed buttons, and has a closed back.

A-line gowns with sleeves

For a church ceremony, these are the most traditional options. The Aurora Gown, from $2,630, is a fitted A-line with long sleeves, a keyhole back and dressed buttons running down the back of the skirt and train. The Elize Gown has long sleeves with dressed buttons and a deep square back. The Addie Gown has long balloon sleeves, a deep V neckline and an open back decorated with dressed buttons.

Halterneck gowns

The Chloe Gown ties with a bow at the neck and has an A-line skirt, a deep open back and a train. The Angeline Gown is a halterneck with an open back and a frilled skirt with train. The Emily Gown, from $2,630, is not a halter but belongs with these for mood: it has voluminous balloon sleeves, an open back and a lace ruffled hemline.

Short dresses for the ceremony and after party

A short dress is useful for a city hall ceremony, the rehearsal dinner and the change for the party. By Malina has several.

  • Jadie Mini Dress in Cream, from $1,160: a deep V mini with long voluminous sleeves and a ruffled hem, in acetate satin with a viscose lining.

The Tulia Mini Dress, from $740, is sleeveless with a folded bandeau detail. The Florinna Mini Dress, from $740, is sleeveless with a bow at the back. The Liana Mini Dress, from $910, is a satin halterneck with an open back and frilled skirt, and runs big over the chest, so size down if you are between sizes. For a longer option, the Seema Maxi Dress in Cream, from $1,160, has an asymmetric lace trimmed hem, and the Milena Midi Dress in Cream has a cape detail but runs small.

Bridal separates

For a bride who does not want a dress at all, By Malina makes a pearl embellished lace set.

Pair it with the matching Pamela Trousers in Pearl, from $940, which are straight leg lace trousers with the same pearl embellishment. It works for a civil ceremony and for a second look at the reception.

Veils

All four veils are made of polyester tulle and fasten with a rhodium-plated brass comb.

Veil Length Detail Price
Sky Mid-length Veil 80 cm Single layer, plain edge from $440
Sky Chapel-length Veil 240 cm Single layer, plain edge from $500
Luxe Veil 240 cm Wide lace border at the end from $620
Lace Trimmed Chapel-length Veil 240 cm Scalloped lace edge from $650

A plain veil suits the lace gowns, because the lace is already doing the work. A lace edged veil suits the plain satin gowns such as the Thelma and the Hermine.

Sizing a By Malina wedding dress

Bridal gowns use the same EU to UK conversion as the ready-to-wear: EU 36 is a UK 8 and a US 4. Most gowns are described as fitting true to size. Order for the widest part of your body and plan for a fitting with a tailor. Our By Malina size guide has the full table.

Editor’s note: if you want a single gown that changes between ceremony and party, I would look first at the Josephine with its detachable sleeves, then at the Zelda and the Audrey with their detachable neck scarves.
