Cashmere Ply Explained: 1-Ply vs 2-Ply vs 9-Ply

Ply is the number of yarn strands twisted together before knitting. A 1-ply cashmere is fine and light for layering, 2-ply is the classic everyday weight, and 3-ply up to 9-ply makes the heavy, warm knits for real winter. Ply is not the same as quality, but it tells you how a jumper will feel and how warm it is. Every piece in the N.Peal edit states its ply, from fine tops to chunky roll necks.

1-ply and superfine

Light enough to wear under a blazer and tuck into trousers. The Luna Roll Neck Cashmere Jumper in Black and the Ivy Cropped Cashmere Cardigan in New Ivory White are 1-ply organic cashmere. N.Peal's superfine range, such as the Imogen Superfine Cashmere V Neck Jumper in Black, blends cashmere with silk for an even smoother surface.

2-ply

The classic weight, warm enough to wear alone through autumn and dense enough to resist pilling. The Longline Cable Cashmere Dress in Oat Grey and the Fur Collar Buttoned Cashmere Cape in Pebble Grey are 2-ply.

3-ply and above

Chunky knits with a substantial handle, for cold weather. The Cable Knit Funnel Neck Cashmere Jumper in New Ivory White is 3-ply, and the Hero Button Cashmere Jumper in Ecru White is 9-ply, heavy enough to wear instead of a jacket on a dry winter day.

Ply vs gauge

Gauge is how tightly the knit is made, measured in stitches per inch. A fine-gauge knit has many small stitches; a chunky knit has few large ones. A 2-ply yarn knitted on a fine gauge is still a light jumper.

Which ply should you buy?

Ply Feel Best for
1-ply and superfine Light and smooth Layering, the office, travel
2-ply Soft, everyday weight Autumn, worn alone
3-ply to 9-ply Heavy and warm Winter, the country, ski chalets

Ply and warmth: a simple rule

Each added ply makes the yarn thicker, so the knit traps more air and keeps more heat. But a tightly knitted 2-ply can feel warmer than a loose 3-ply, because density matters as much as thickness. Judge a jumper by both.

How ply affects pilling and wear

Twisting two strands together locks loose fibre ends into the yarn, so 2-ply cashmere usually pills less than 1-ply. Chunky knits are durable, but their larger stitches can snag on jewellery and Velcro. Read why cashmere pills for more.

Ply across the N.Peal collection

  • Superfine (cashmere and silk): tops, V-necks and cropped cardigans for layering.
  • 1-ply organic: roll necks, crew necks and the Ivy cardigans.
  • 2-ply: cable dresses, buttoned capes and classic cardigans.
  • 3-ply to 9-ply: chunky roll necks, funnel necks and statement cables.

Building a wardrobe by ply

Most wardrobes need three weights: a fine layer, an everyday knit and one heavy jumper. A fine roll neck under tailoring, a 2-ply cardigan on its own and a chunky cable for weekends cover the whole winter.

Frequently asked questions

What does ply mean in cashmere?

The number of yarn strands twisted together before knitting. More ply makes a thicker, warmer yarn.

Is 2-ply cashmere better than 1-ply?

It is warmer and usually more durable, but not better for every use. 1-ply is lighter and layers more easily.

Is higher ply better quality?

No. Ply measures thickness, not quality. Fibre length and fineness decide quality.

What ply is a chunky cashmere jumper?

Usually 3-ply and above. N.Peal's heaviest knits are 9-ply.
