Midnight in Manhattan keeps that tailoring and moves it to another city. The jackets are sharper, the palette darker, and the eveningwear arrives with a harder edge: lace and sequins sit beside crocodile print, and flowers are painted rather than only embroidered.

The key ideas from the runway

Four ideas run through the collection, and each one is visible in the pieces that reach the boutiques.

• Downtown tailoring. The press release describes an architectural jacket with rounded shoulders, a cinched waist and exaggerated hips, worn over tulip and tube skirts and long straight trousers, in wool, tweed and velvet in midnight black and charcoal. WWD picked out tuxedo trousers and smoking jackets.
• Crocodile print. A crocodile leather print is the season’s signature, used on leather and, more unexpectedly, on sequinned tulle. Vogue singled out a black croc-stamped pencil skirt and matching trousers.
• Painted florals. Flowers hand-painted onto mirrored leather, which the house links to Cy Twombly’s brushstrokes, are the uptown half of the brief. Vogue noted pink flowers painted on leather.
• The evening finale. Lace overlays, a naked dress set with silver stones, taffeta dresses with short puff skirts and voluminous ballgowns in what the house calls stormy hues, closing in black organza.
