Saiid Kobeisy vs Elie Saab: the two Beirut houses compared

Saiid Kobeisy and Elie Saab are the two names a shopper looking for Beirut eveningwear meets first, and they are compared because they share a city, a couture calendar and a customer. Origin and scale

Both houses are Lebanese and both are Beirut ateliers that grew into the Gulf and then into Paris. Saab is the establishment: the first Lebanese house on the Paris couture schedule, with a large ready-to-wear business and a global stockist network. Kobeisy dates itself from 2000, showed couture from 2005, ready-to-wear from 2010, and opened its Paris showroom in 2024. In scale Saab is the bigger house by some distance; in age Kobeisy is a generation younger.

Signature

Put a Saab gown and a Kobeisy gown side by side and the difference is where the eye goes. On the Saab it goes to the surface: embroidery and lace over the whole body, a slender line under it. On the Kobeisy it goes to the shape: a cape falling from the shoulder, a bow at the back, a skirt cascading from a fitted waist, with the embroidery placed along the bodice and the fabric left visible around it. Saab decorates a silhouette; Kobeisy builds one.
