Herno Raincoats and Laminar: The Men’s Rainwear Guide
Herno began in 1948 as a men’s raincoat maker in Lesa, on the shore of Lake Maggiore, and rainwear is still the heart of the house. A Herno raincoat today is a city-cut coat built on a technical membrane, from 2-Layer Windstopper rated to a 20,000 mm water column to Gore-Tex shells, while Laminar is the label Herno uses for its most technical outerwear.
Quick answer
- Herno was founded in 1948 in Lesa, Piedmont, by Giuseppe Marenzi and Alessandra Diana, and its first product was the men’s raincoat.
- The earliest coats used cotton treated with castor oil, a post-war answer to keeping out the rain.
- Laminar is Herno’s technical line, and Herno’s Gore-Tex shells are sold under it.
- Herno’s 2-Layer Windstopper bonds polyester microfibre to a membrane rated to a 20,000 mm water column.
- The rain-ready Herno coats and jackets in this Coveti edit cost $1,720 to $2,190.
- Sizing is Italian: subtract 10 from the IT size for your UK/US chest size, so IT 50 is a 40.
Why is Herno known for raincoats?
Because that is where it started. Giuseppe Marenzi and his wife Alessandra Diana set up the company in 1948 in Lesa, in the province of Novara, and named it after the Erno river, which runs into Lake Maggiore. The first thing they made was a men’s raincoat.
Post-war Italy was short of modern materials, so the early coats used cotton treated with castor oil to shed water. It was a practical fix for a wet lakeside climate, and it set the rule the house still follows: outerwear is judged first on how it performs, then on how it looks.
Cashmere coats and womenswear arrived in the 1950s. Stores opened in Osaka and Tokyo in 1968, and for years Herno also produced outerwear for other luxury houses. From the 1980s its name became tied to very light nylon parkas and down jackets. The raincoat never left the line. It simply became more technical. What is Herno Laminar?
Laminar is Herno’s technical line: performance outerwear in which weather protection leads the design. Herno’s Gore-Tex shells are sold under it. Think of Laminar as the engineering end of the house, with the mainline keeping the tailored shapes Herno is famous for.
For a buyer, the useful point is that the two worlds now overlap. The mainline rain pieces below use bonded membranes too, including Gore-Tex, but in city cuts with lapels, removable bibs and hoods, finished with the small metal Herno logo plate on the back. You get technical protection without looking dressed for a mountain.
Herno rain fabrics compared
| Fabric | What it is | Water protection (Herno’s own figure) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-Layer Windstopper | Polyester microfibre bonded to a high-performance, breathable membrane | 20,000 mm water column | Daily commuting, heavy rain |
| 2-Layer Gore-Tex | Lightweight stretch nylon in a plain 30-denier weave with a Gore-Tex membrane | Protection against wind and rain | Travel, wind and rain |
| Washington | Laminated, run-resistant two-way stretch fabric treated to resist water | Water-resistant | City trench, light rain |
| Flannel with waterproof membrane | Super-light wool-blend flannel backed with a membrane | 500 mm water column | Showers with tailoring |
| Nylon Ultralight | Herno’s iconic nylon with a silk-like feel | Highly water-resistant | Drizzle, layering |
Read the numbers sensibly. A 20,000 mm water column is a serious figure, built for sustained rain. The 500 mm flannel sits closer to showerproof: fine for the walk from the car, less suited to an hour in a downpour.
How do you choose a men’s raincoat?
Start with how you travel. A man who walks to work in a wet city needs a longer coat with a hood and a real membrane. A man who drives needs something shorter that will not bunch at the seat, and a stretch fabric helps.
- Length: a long coat protects your trousers; a short parka is easier in a car and on a bike.
- Hood: a removable hood gives you two coats in one, smart without it and practical with it.
- Bib: Herno’s removable bibs block wind at the neck and chest, then come out for milder days.
- Padding: goose down and feather padding turn a raincoat into a three-season coat.
- Cloth: wool blends look like tailoring, nylon membranes keep you driest.
The best Herno raincoats for men at Coveti
Every pick below is full price, Fall Winter 2026, and in stock across a spread of sizes. Browse the full edit in men’s coats and men’s jackets.
1. Blue Raincoat in 2-Layer Windstopper
The purest modern version of the Herno raincoat, at $1,720. Polyester microfibre is bonded to a high-performance membrane that breathes and carries a 20,000 mm water-column rating. A removable hood adds cover when the rain turns sideways, and the clean, city-ready shape sits neatly over a suit jacket. It suits the commuter who wants one coat for every wet day. The same coat comes in brown.
2. 2-Layer Gore-Tex Coat in Black
A classic lapel coat built on a Gore-Tex membrane, in lightweight stretch nylon with a plain 30-denier weave, for $2,050. Goose down padding and a removable bib let it carry on into colder weeks, and Herno designed it for formal occasions and business days in the city. It is the choice for the man who needs to look as if he is wearing a proper overcoat while staying properly dry.
3. Navy Blue Trench Coat in Washington
Herno’s trench, made in Italy, costs $2,080. The Washington fabric is laminated, run-resistant and stretches two ways, and it is treated to resist water. A removable bib with a two-way zip and light feather padding add warmth, and the stretch makes it comfortable at a desk and behind the wheel. A tailored silhouette keeps it right for the office. There is also a pearl grey version.
4. Vintage-Effect Wool-Blend Raincoat in Light Taupe
The heritage choice, at $1,990. Thick wool yarns are blended with polyester and woven at high density, giving a soft cloth with a vintage look that nods to the earliest Herno raincoats. Herno pitches it for business outfits and city looks. No membrane is named, so treat it as a coat for cool, damp days, not storms. It suits a man who wants his raincoat to read as tailoring.
5. Blue Short Parka in 2-Layer Gore-Tex
Shorter and sportier at $2,190: lightweight stretch nylon with a Gore-Tex membrane, goose down padding, a removable puffer and a removable hood, with the logo on the back. Take the puffer out in spring and it becomes a light shell. The size run is wide, from 34 to 50, which makes it one of the easiest pieces in the edit to fit. It suits drivers and weekend walkers alike.
6. 2-Layer Gore-Tex Jacket in Black
A minimalist hip-length jacket for $2,130, with a 2-layer Gore-Tex construction in lightweight stretch nylon with a 30-denier weave. It has a high collar, a removable hood and light wadding, and it protects against wind and rain while still looking smart. For travel it is the most useful piece here: one jacket that covers a city break, an airport and a wet evening out.
7. Flannel Coat with Waterproof Membrane in Dark Brown
For the man who lives in tailoring, at $2,080. Super-light flannel in wool, polyester and viscose looks like a classic overcoat, yet a waterproof membrane behind it withstands up to a 500 mm water column. That makes it a showers coat, not a storm coat, and the trade is worth it for how good it looks over grey flannel trousers. It also comes in iron.
