Herno Shearling Jackets for Men: Real Shearling, Faux Fur and Teddy

A men’s shearling jacket from Herno is one of two things: real dyed lamb shearling, used on one full shearling jacket and as the collar on 11 wool and cashmere coats, and faux shearling, faux fur and teddy fabrics made from polyester. At Coveti the real lamb shearling pieces cost $3,300 to $6,020, and the faux styles cost $1,270 to $2,240.

Quick answer

  • Real shearling at Coveti: 12 Herno pieces. One Shearling Jacket in lamb shearling, plus 11 coats with a dyed lamb shearling collar (origin Portugal).
  • Faux pieces: faux shearling peacoat and bomber, beaver-effect faux fur collars, melange teddy coats, a velvet-effect shacket and a sherpa-trimmed jacket. All of these use polyester for the pile.
  • Prices: real shearling $3,300 to $6,020; faux styles $1,270 to $2,240.
  • Shipping: Herno notes that real lamb shearling cannot be shipped to every destination. Faux pieces do not carry this note.
  • Care: real shearling needs a specialist leather cleaner; most faux pieces need a specialist dry clean.

What is shearling, and how is it different from faux fur?

Shearling is a lambskin with the wool left on. The suede side faces out, the curly wool faces in, and the two are one material, so it is warm, breathable and heavy. A shearling collar is a strip of that same material sewn onto a coat.

Faux shearling copies the look with two bonded layers: a suede-effect face and a soft pile on the reverse. Faux fur is a polyester pile used on collars and linings. Teddy is a short, dense, curly polyester pile used for the whole garment. Sherpa is a fleece pile, usually used as a lining.

All four keep you warm. Real shearling breathes well and, with care, lasts for many years. Faux versions are lighter, cheaper, easier to care for and free of animal fibres. The important thing is knowing which one you are buying, which is why every pick below is labelled.

Real lamb shearling: the four best Herno pieces

1. Shearling Jacket in Light Taupe

The only Herno piece at Coveti made entirely of real lamb shearling, at $6,020. Curly pile on the inside, suede on the outside, with a high collar, flap pockets and ribbed knit hems. It works over a shirt in the office and a T-shirt at the weekend. Shearling is heavy and warm, so wear a light layer under it. Chest sizes 36, 40 and 42.

2. Navy Blue Carcoat in Cashmere, Silk and Monogram

A carcoat in 51% silk and 49% cashmere with a PFC-free water-repellent finish, goose down padding (90% down, 10% feather) and a collar in real dyed lamb shearling. At $5,130 it is the warmest real-fur option here and the most formal. Wear it over a suit. It also comes in camel, chantilly and grey. Chest sizes 34 to 46.

3. Dark Brown Short Coat in Pure Cashmere and Suede Effect

A short coat in 100% cashmere with a sable-effect finish, suede-effect microfibre details, wadding padding and a real dyed lamb shearling collar. Priced at $4,440. It is easy to wear over a blazer and with jeans. Also in dark blue, camel and dark taupe. Chest sizes 34 to 46.

4. Navy Blue Short Coat in Fine Wool

The entry point to real shearling at $3,300. The shell is New Zealand merino, treated to resist water and dirt without harmful chemicals, padded with wadding and finished with a real dyed lamb shearling collar. Strapped cuffs keep out the wind. It is the coat you reach for every morning from November to March. Chest sizes 34 to 48.

Faux shearling and faux fur: the best alternatives

5. Faux Shearling Peacoat in Pearl Grey

A double-breasted peacoat with a lapel collar, at $1,550. Despite the shearling name, the composition is 93% polyester and 7% elastane: a suede-effect face bonded to a beaver-effect faux fur interior. The elastane adds give across the shoulders. Pearl grey is softer than the usual navy. Our men’s peacoat guide covers fit. Chest sizes 34 to 44.

6. Faux Shearling Bomber Jacket in Blue

The bomber version of the same faux shearling fabric, at $1,570. Suede-effect exterior, beaver-effect faux fur interior, bomber collar and ribbed knit hems in a wool blend. It is light, warm and has the shearling flying jacket look without the weight of real skin. More bomber styles are in our Herno bomber jacket guide. Chest sizes 36 to 42.

7. Pearl Grey Bomber Jacket in Arendelle and Faux Fur

Here the faux fur is a detail, and the warmth comes from real goose down (90% down, 10% feather) inside a super-matt, velvety polyester shell called Arendelle. Priced at $1,720. Covered zip and press-stud fastening keep the front clean. It also comes in navy, dark taupe and white. Chest sizes 34 to 46.

8. Camel Resort Bomber Jacket in Suede-Effect Microfibre and Light Faux Fur

From the Resort line, at $1,880. An extra-soft suede microfibre bomber with the inside of the collar finished in beaver-effect faux fur. Padded with wadding, light enough for travel and smart enough for dinner. Camel works with denim and grey flannel. Made in Italy. Also in ice. Chest sizes 36 to 46.

9. Chantilly Coat in Ecowool and Light Faux Fur

A coat in RWS-certified virgin wool twill (75% virgin wool, 25% polyamide), woven and finished in Tuscany, with polyester faux fur details. At $1,940, it is the best choice for a buyer who wants wool, a fur-look trim and no animal fur. Padded with wadding, high collar, zip and press-stud fastening. Also in navy. Chest sizes 34 to 44.

Teddy, sherpa and shearling-effect jackets

10. Chantilly Coat in Melange Teddy

The most affordable warm coat in this edit, at $1,370. The whole coat is a melange teddy pile in 100% polyester, with an oversized fit, lapel collar and logo-branded buttons. It is soft, light and easy to throw over tailoring in town and over knitwear at the weekend. Chest sizes 36 to 42.

11. Grey Shacket in Melange Teddy

The same teddy fabric cut as a shirt jacket, at $1,270. Shirt collar, breast pocket and logo buttons. It is a layer for autumn days and heated offices. For more shirt jackets, see our Herno shackets and overshirts guide. Chest sizes 34 to 44.

12. Velvet-Effect Shearling Shacket in Cream White

Another name to read carefully. This shacket is 100% polyester: a bonded fabric of lustrous velvet and melange boucle that gives a shearling-style texture. Priced at $1,370, with a shirt collar and buttoned cuffs. It carries a suit through winter without adding bulk. Chest sizes 36 to 42.

13. Military Jacket in Nylon Chamonix and Sherpa

A short parka in technical Chamonix nylon with baffle construction, down padding (80% down, 20% feather) and sherpa fleece details in acrylic and polyester. At $1,830 it is the most outdoor piece here, with real wind resistance. The sherpa is light and low-density. Chest sizes 36 to 46.

How should a shearling jacket fit?

Real shearling does not stretch, so the shoulders must fit from day one. You should be able to cross your arms without the back pulling. Over a shirt, there should be a little room at the chest. Over a heavy knit, a shearling jacket can feel tight.

Coveti lists Herno in UK/US chest sizes, which equal the Italian size minus 10. Order your usual jacket size. Size up one only if you will wear a thick knit under a slim-fit piece. The Herno size guide has every conversion.

Shearling around the world

United Kingdom: real shearling dislikes heavy rain. In London, the faux shearling peacoat and the teddy coat cope better with wet days, and the shearling-collar coats suit dry, cold weeks.

United States: New York and Chicago winters are where real shearling earns its weight. On the West Coast, the teddy shacket and faux bomber are warm enough.

Europe: in Milan, Munich and Stockholm, the cashmere short coat with a shearling collar is the classic city choice. Some European buyers prefer the faux fur pieces for ethical reasons.

Japan: dry winters suit real shearling well. Tokyo buyers often choose shorter lengths, so the short coats and bombers are the strongest picks.

Middle East and Australia: buyers in Dubai often buy shearling for travel to colder cities. In Melbourne, a teddy coat covers most winter days. Real fur rules differ between countries: Herno notes its lamb shearling cannot be shipped to every destination, so check the product page before you order.

How to care for shearling and faux fur

  • Real lamb shearling: specialist leather clean only. Keep away from direct heat and moisture. Store on a shaped hanger.
  • Shearling-collar coats: specialist dry clean only. Brush gently after wear. Down-filled pieces need a cleaner experienced with down.
  • Faux shearling, teddy and faux fur: follow the care label; specialist dry cleaning is recommended. Brush the pile softly to keep it from matting.
  • Rain: if real shearling gets wet, let it dry slowly at room temperature, away from radiators.

Frequently asked questions

Does Herno use real shearling?

Yes, on a small number of pieces. At Coveti, 12 Herno styles use real lamb shearling: the Shearling Jacket in Light Taupe is made entirely of it, and 11 wool and cashmere coats have a collar in dyed lamb shearling, origin Portugal.

Is the Herno Faux Shearling Peacoat real sheepskin?

No. The Herno Faux Shearling Peacoat is 93% polyester and 7% elastane, with a suede-effect exterior and a beaver-effect faux fur interior. It contains no animal skin.

How much is a Herno shearling jacket?

At Coveti, the Herno Shearling Jacket in real lamb shearling costs $6,020. Coats with a real lamb shearling collar cost $3,300 to $5,130, and faux shearling, faux fur and teddy styles cost $1,270 to $2,240.

Can Herno shearling be shipped to any country?

Not always. Herno states that its real lamb shearling cannot be shipped to every destination because fur rules vary by country. Faux fur, teddy and faux shearling pieces do not carry this restriction.

Is teddy the same as shearling?

No. Shearling is lambskin with the wool left on. Teddy is a short, curly synthetic pile, and Herno’s melange teddy coat and shacket are 100% polyester. Teddy is lighter and cheaper; shearling is warmer and more breathable.

How do you clean a shearling jacket?

Real shearling should go to a specialist leather cleaner only. Keep it away from direct heat and moisture, let it dry slowly if it gets wet, and store it on a shaped hanger.
