How to Clean Moon Boots: Nylon, Suede, Faux Fur and Felt

To clean Moon Boots, brush off dry dirt with a soft dry brush, wipe any marks with a soft damp cloth and a little mild detergent in water, then let the boots dry at room temperature. Those are the care steps Moon Boot at Coveti prints for its nylon pairs, such as the Icon Nylon Boots in Black, and they cover most of the designer boots in the range. Suede, nubuck and shearling need a gentler routine, and the house is clear that those boots should never be immersed.

The short answer, then. Identify the upper first, because the method follows the material. Nylon and felt take a brush and a damp cloth with mild detergent. Suede and shearling take a medium bristle brush, a damp microfibre cloth, a towel to pat them dry and a second brushing, and never a soak. The soles of every pair get a soft brush, mild detergent and water. Everything dries at room temperature, and everything is stored in its original bag.

First, check what your boots are made of

Every Moon Boot product page lists the composition of the upper, the lining and the sole. Read the upper, and read the first fibre in the list, since that is the material you are cleaning most of the time. A boot can look like suede and be mostly polyester, and the name does not always tell you. The EVX Mule Loaf Suede in Pink, for example, lists a 100% sheepskin upper, so it takes the suede and shearling routine.

Across the 149 pairs in the Moon Boot edit at Coveti, the uppers fall into four groups, which the table further down counts. Suede, nubuck and shearling is the largest group at 64 pairs. Nylon, listed by the house as polyamide, is next at 42. Polyester and felt account for 30, and faux fur and fleece for 13.

How to clean nylon Moon Boots

The nylon Icon is the boot most people mean when they say Moon Boot. The Icon Nylon Boots in Black are $320 at Coveti, with a 70% polyamide upper. The house describes the nylon Icon as water-repellent and snow-proof, which makes it the most forgiving pair to clean.

  1. Let the boots dry if they are wet, then brush off loose dirt and dried snow with a soft dry brush.
  2. Mix a little mild detergent into water.
  3. Dip a soft cloth in the mix, wring it out well and wipe the marks on the upper.
  4. Wipe again with a cloth dampened in clean water to lift the detergent.
  5. Leave the boots to dry at room temperature.

The same steps apply to the low nylon pairs. The Icon Low Nylon Boots in White Mono are $380 at Coveti, and white is the colour that shows marks soonest, so a quick wipe after each wear saves a bigger clean later. Work on marks while they are fresh; the house steps are gentle, and a gentle method works best on new dirt.

How to clean suede, nubuck and shearling Moon Boots

This is the routine to follow most carefully, and it applies to the biggest group of boots in the range. It covers the suede Icons, the shearling pairs, the LTrack and Mezzaluna suede boots, the nubuck felt styles and the shearling ballerinas. The Icon Low Suede Boots in Brown are $650 at Coveti, and the Icon Shearling Boots in Brown are $890 at Coveti; both follow these steps.

  1. Brush the upper with a medium bristle brush. A suede brush is the right tool, and the house names it.
  2. Dampen a microfibre cloth, a cotton cloth works too, and wring it out until it is barely wet.
  3. Wipe the marked areas gently. Do not soak the material and never immerse the boot in water.
  4. Pat the area dry with a towel.
  5. Leave the boots to dry at room temperature.
  6. Brush the suede again once it is dry, to lift the nap.

The final brushing matters. Damp suede dries flat, and brushing brings the surface back. The same applies to the curly shearling on pairs like the Shearling Ballerinas in White, $340 at Coveti, where the upper is 100% sheep leather.

The house does not mention protective sprays, suede erasers and similar products in its care steps, and we do not add them here. If a stain will not shift with the brush and the damp cloth, the house gives no further method, and we would not improvise one.

How to clean faux fur and fleece Moon Boots

The faux fur Icons have uppers mostly of modacrylic, and the fleece pairs mostly of acrylic and polyester. The Icon Faux-Fur Boots in White are $490 at Coveti, and the Icon Fleece Boots in Cream are $530 at Coveti.

The house prints the general steps for these pairs: a soft dry brush for dirt, then a soft damp cloth with mild detergent and water for marks. Its instruction never to immerse appears only on the suede version of the care steps, but a damp cloth is all the routine asks for, so we would not soak a faux fur boot either. Keep the cloth only just damp, and give the pile time to dry fully at room temperature before you brush it again.

How to clean felt and polyester Moon Boots

Felt and polyester pairs follow the nylon routine. The EVX Mule Felt in Beige has a 100% polyester upper and is $370 at Coveti. The Icon Nubuck Felt Boots in Dark Brown, $560 at Coveti, are mostly polyester with panels of nubuck and cow suede.

On a mixed boot like that, clean each material by its own method. Use the brush and damp cloth with mild detergent on the felt, and the medium bristle brush and barely damp cloth on the nubuck and suede panels, then pat dry. Keep detergent away from the suede.

Cleaning the soles

The sole method is the same for every pair: a soft brush, mild detergent and water, on the mid sole and the outsole. On the Icon that means the thermoplastic mid sole and the rubber tread sole with its suction pads, where grit collects in the tread. Brush the tread out first, wash the sides of the mid sole with the detergent mix, and wipe them with clean water. Take care at the join between sole and upper on suede boots, so the water does not run up into the suede.

Drying and storing your Moon Boots

The house gives one drying instruction: room temperature. It gives no other drying method, so we do not suggest one. Leave them in a room at normal temperature and let them dry in their own time. A boot that has been cleaned on the outside will also need its lining to be dry before it goes away.

For storage, the house says to keep the boots in their original bag. Keep the bag that comes with your pair for that reason. Clean the boots before they go away at the end of the season, check they are fully dry, and store them in the bag until the snow comes back.

Upper Pairs at Coveti Upper cleaning Sole cleaning Drying
Nylon (polyamide) 42 soft dry brush, then a soft damp cloth with mild detergent and water soft brush, mild detergent and water room temperature
Suede, nubuck and shearling 64 medium bristle brush, damp microfibre cloth, never immerse, pat dry, brush again soft brush, mild detergent and water room temperature
Faux fur and fleece 13 soft dry brush, then a soft damp cloth; no soaking soft brush, mild detergent and water room temperature
Polyester and felt 30 soft dry brush, then a soft damp cloth with mild detergent and water soft brush, mild detergent and water room temperature

How we measured: we sorted the 149 pairs Coveti added on 1 November 2026 by the first fibre listed for the upper, then copied the cleaning steps from the Materials and Care tab of those pairs on moonboot.com. Moon Boot prints three versions of its care steps; the suede version is the only one that says never to immerse the boot.

The table above shows the point of this guide in one view. Three of the four groups share the same basic method, a brush and a damp cloth with mild detergent. The suede, nubuck and shearling group is the exception, and it is also the largest, at 64 of the 149 pairs. The sole and drying columns are identical for every group.

Moon Boot care around the world

The care steps are the same everywhere, but the conditions the boots meet are not. Search interest in the brand, averaged over twelve months, helps show where those boots are being worn.

United States. The brand draws about 201,000 searches a month, and how to clean moon boots about 50. Much of that winter wear is city wear in snow and slush, so the nylon routine, done often, is the one most American owners will use. The house gives no specific instruction for road salt; the brush, damp cloth and mild detergent are what we would use.

United Kingdom. About 40,500 searches a month. A British winter is wet more often than it is snowy, which favours the nylon pairs for daily wear. If you own suede, the same rule applies as anywhere: brush, barely damp cloth, pat dry, brush again.

Europe. Germany leads Europe at about 90,500 monthly searches, peaking near 301,000 in January, with Italy at 49,500 and France at 40,500. In the Alps the boots meet real snow daily, so drying at room temperature between wears is the step that matters most.

The Gulf. About 2,400 searches a month in the UAE and 1,300 in Saudi Arabia. Here the boots spend most of the year in a cupboard between winter trips, so storage is the main concern. Clean them after the trip, make sure they are dry, and keep them in the original bag, as the house advises.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put Moon Boots in the washing machine?

The house gives no instruction for machine washing. Its care steps for every pair are by hand: a soft brush for dirt, a soft damp cloth with mild detergent and water for marks, and drying at room temperature. For suede, nubuck and shearling it adds that the boot should never be immersed, so we would keep every pair out of the machine.

How do you clean white Moon Boots?

Follow the method for the upper. White nylon, as on the Icon Low Nylon in White, takes a soft dry brush, then a soft damp cloth with mild detergent and water, then a clean damp wipe. White faux fur takes the same gentle steps without soaking. Clean white pairs often, because marks are easiest to lift while they are fresh.

How do you clean suede Moon Boots?

Brush with a medium bristle brush, then wipe marks with a damp microfibre cloth, wrung out until barely wet. Never immerse the boot. Pat the area dry with a towel, leave the boots at room temperature until dry, and brush the suede again to lift the nap. The same routine applies to nubuck and shearling.

How do you dry Moon Boots after snow?

Brush off the snow, then leave the boots to dry at room temperature, which is the only drying method the house gives. Allow time for the lining as well as the upper, and wait until both are fully dry before you clean marks off the suede and before you store the pair.

How should I store Moon Boots between seasons?

Clean them first, make sure they are completely dry, then store them in the original bag, which is what the house recommends. That is a good reason to keep the bag your pair arrives in. Check them again before the next winter, and give the suede pairs a light brush before the first wear.

Are Moon Boots waterproof?

The house describes the nylon Icon as water-repellent and snow-proof, not waterproof. Suede and shearling pairs need more care with water, and the house says never to immerse them. Check the composition on the product page, and our Moon Boot size guide covers fit before you buy.
