How to Style a Satin Slip Dress From Day to Black Tie

0

To style a satin slip dress from day to black tie, change the layer and the shoe rather than the dress: a knit and flat shoes for daytime, a blazer and a low heel for the office, a leather jacket for dinner, and a sleek heel, small bag and simple jewellery for black tie. Choose a slip in a solid, mid-weight satin in a length that suits the most formal event you plan to wear it to.

The satin slip is the most flexible dress you can own, but it is also easy to get wrong. Too shiny for the office, too bare for a cold evening, too casual for black tie. This guide walks through five settings, with the layers that make each one work. We use By Malina satin dresses as examples throughout, because the Stockholm label has built much of its collection on satin with a clean finish.

Choosing the right satin dress

Before styling, check three things.

Weight

Thin, very shiny satin shows every line underneath and creases quickly. A mid-weight satin with a lining hangs better and works in more settings. Many By Malina satin dresses use an acetate and polyester blend with a viscose lining.

Neckline

The classic slip has thin straps and a bias cut. A cowl neck, a one shoulder neckline and a high neck all offer the same fluid look with more coverage, which helps at daytime events and in cooler weather.

Length

Midi is the most flexible: long enough for most formal events, short enough for daytime. Maxi is the right choice if black tie is on your calendar. Mini is for parties.

Five satin dresses to style

  • Leah Maxi Dress in Champagne, from $870: a sleeveless satin maxi with a cowl draped neckline, closed with a side zip, in viscose with a viscose lining. It is the closest thing in the By Malina edit to a classic slip.
  • Marisa Maxi Dress in Champagne, from $870: the Leah’s sister, in the same satin, with an asymmetric neckline, short sleeves and draped details.
  • Cassia Maxi Dress in Dark Brown, from $1,160: a satin maxi with a draped one shoulder neckline and a detachable cape, fitted at bust, waist and hip.
  • Ingrid Midi Dress in Moss Green, from $910: a satin midi with a V-neck, gathered bust, fitted waist and detachable scarf.
  • Norea Mini Dress in Black, from $910: a relaxed satin mini with a scarf detail at the V-neck, long voluminous sleeves and an asymmetric lace hem.

1. Daytime: knit and flat shoes

The fastest way to take satin into the daytime is to cover the shine with texture. Put a fine cardigan over the shoulders, then add a flat shoe and a canvas tote.

With the Leah, try a relaxed knit cardigan worn open, a flat leather sandal in summer and a loafer in autumn. The Candice Cape in Black, from $500, a brushed alpaca blend knitted cape with a high neck, does the same job and leaves the arms free.

Keep jewellery minimal and the hair loose. Daytime satin looks best when it looks unplanned.

2. The office: blazer and low heel

A tailored blazer changes the mood of a slip completely. The shoulder line takes over and the satin becomes a lining, a flash of shine at the hem and the neck.

The Emelia Blazer in Dark Brown, from $800, is a fitted satin blazer with a V-neckline and barrel sleeves. Over the Cassia in the same dark brown, it reads as a deliberate tonal look. For a sharper line, a black wool blazer works over almost any satin midi.

Choose a midi rather than a maxi for the office, and add a low block heel. If the neckline is low, wear a fine knit underneath.

3. Weekend: belt and denim jacket

For a weekend lunch, a belt and a casual jacket make satin feel easy. A narrow belt at the waist adds shape to a loose cut. The Mini Monogram Belt in Black, from $350, is a 1 cm leather belt with a gold-tone Malina monogram buckle, made in Italy. At that width it marks the waist without breaking the line of the dress.

Add a denim jacket and a white trainer. The contrast between the rough denim and the smooth satin is the whole point.

4. Dinner: leather jacket and a heel

For an evening out, a leather jacket over a satin slip is the most reliable combination there is. The leather gives weight, the satin gives movement.

The Carol Leather Blazer in Black, from $2,210, is a fitted leather blazer with a marked shoulder, made in Istanbul. Over the Ingrid midi in moss green, it moves the dress from garden wedding to restaurant.

Choose a slim heeled sandal and a small shoulder bag. A satin scarf knotted at the neck, such as the Nalia Scarf in Black, a triangle satin scarf with fringe, adds a second texture of shine.

5. Black tie: floor length and restraint

Black tie is the one setting where the slip has to do the work on its own. Choose a floor-length satin, and keep everything else quiet.

  • Dress: a satin maxi such as the Leah, the Marisa and the Cassia. The Cassia’s detachable cape is useful here: wear it for the ceremony and dinner, then take it off for dancing.
  • Shoe: a fine strappy heel in a metallic, matched to the tone of the dress.
  • Bag: a small clutch, held, not worn.
  • Jewellery: one statement piece, such as a pair of earrings, and nothing competing with it.
  • Outer layer: a long tailored coat, worn over the shoulders.

Keep the hair off the neckline so the cowl and the drape can be seen.

Caring for satin

Satin marks easily, so read the label before washing. Several By Malina satin dresses are hand wash, and a few are dry clean only. Steam rather than iron where you can, and hang satin on a padded hanger so the shoulders do not mark. Store it away from rough fabrics that can catch the surface.

Sizing satin

Satin has little stretch, so the fit at the hip matters more than in jersey. A few By Malina satin styles run small, and the product page says so. If you are between sizes, choose the larger one. Our By Malina size guide lists the styles to size up in.

Editor’s note: if I could keep only one satin dress, it would be a cowl neck maxi in a warm neutral. I find champagne and dark brown softer than black in photographs, and they take a blazer as easily as a heel.

Frequently asked questions

Can you wear a satin slip dress to a black tie event?

Yes, if it is floor length and in a mid-weight satin. Keep the shoe, bag and jewellery simple and let the drape of the dress lead.

How do you make a satin slip dress look casual?

Add texture and flat shoes. A knit cardigan, a denim jacket and a trainer all take the shine down and make satin feel relaxed.

What jacket goes with a satin slip dress?

A tailored blazer for the office, a leather jacket for dinner and a denim jacket for the weekend. Match a fitted jacket to a fitted dress and an oversized jacket to a loose one.

Which By Malina dress is most like a slip dress?

The Leah Maxi Dress in Champagne, a sleeveless satin maxi with a cowl draped neckline, is the closest to a classic slip in the By Malina edit.

How should I wash a satin dress?

Follow the care label. Several By Malina satin dresses are hand wash and some are dry clean only. Steam instead of ironing and hang on a padded hanger.
