Who Is Dice Kayek? The Paris House Built on the White Shirt
Dice Kayek is a Paris fashion house founded in 1992 by two Turkish sisters, Ece and Ayse Ege. It began with a small run of white poplin shirts, and more than thirty years later the shirt is still the piece the house is known for, cut with sculpted collars, puffed sleeves and crystal work. Around it sits a tight wardrobe of tailoring, structured dresses and hand-finished brooches. Coveti carries 161 current Dice Kayek pieces, from $530 to $6,610. This is who the house is, what it makes and where to start.

The founders
Dice Kayek was founded in Paris in 1992 by the Turkish sisters Ece and Ayse Ege. Ece, who trained at ESMOD in Paris, is the creative director; Ayse runs the company. Ece Ege also served as artistic director of the Japanese house Hanae Mori from 2002, and in 2004 the sisters created the Turkish ready-to-wear label Machka for the Ayaydin-Miroglio group. Dice Kayek stayed the main project throughout, run between a Paris address and an Istanbul studio.
What Dice Kayek is known for
Three things. The white shirt, first: poplin, voile and organza, with the collar, the cuff and the sleeve doing the work. The Signature Blouse is the clearest example, silk organza with full sleeves. Second, sculptural tailoring: peplum blazers, cropped jackets and capes with rounded shoulders, like Tailored Peplum Blazer Satin Back in Black. Third, decoration applied by hand rather than printed, from the crystal garland on Crystal Garland Jacket in Black to the crystal brooches that the house pins to its own lapels.
The Jameel Prize and the museum pieces
In December 2013 the house won the third Jameel Prize at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London for its Istanbul Contrast couture pieces, the first fashion house to take the award. Istanbul Contrast drew on the symbols of the old city, its domes and tiles, and it travelled from the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris to Istanbul Modern and the Amsterdam Museum. It is unusual for a ready-to-wear house to be recognised by a design museum in this way, and it explains the couture finish on pieces that are otherwise very wearable.
How the house dresses a woman
The Dice Kayek look is polished without being corporate. A white shirt with a sculpted collar goes under a cropped jacket and over a column skirt; the same jacket goes over jeans at the weekend. Evening is a strapless gown such as Strapless Bow-Detail Satin Gown in Black, a velvet dress, a crystal collar on a plain black shirt. Colour is used sparingly: black, navy, white and a few strong accents, fuchsia and green this season.
Fit and sizing
The house cuts on the French ladder FR 34 to 46, which Coveti shows as UK 6 to 18 (FR 36 is a UK 8), and its own fit note on almost every piece is that it fits true to size. The knitwear comes in S, M and L. The house models are 173 to 176 cm and usually wear an FR 36. The Dice Kayek size guide has the full conversion and the measurements.
