Is N.Peal a Luxury Brand? The London Cashmere House Explained
Yes. N.Peal is a British luxury cashmere house, founded in 1936 in London's Burlington Arcade and still trading from the same Mayfair shop. It controls its cashmere from the herders of Inner Mongolia to the finished garment, and it is best known for cashmere jumpers, cardigans and the knitwear Daniel Craig wore as James Bond. Coveti now carries the N.Peal women's edit, from the Luna Roll Neck Cashmere Jumper in Black to fur-trimmed capes and lounge sets.
What does N.Peal stand for?
The N stands for Nat, after the founder, Nat Peal. He was born Leapman and shortened the first part of his surname to Peal, a name that sounded more traditionally British. He opened the first shop in March 1936 as a men's haberdashery in the Burlington Arcade, a covered Regency arcade off Piccadilly.
A short history of N.Peal
During the Second World War, Nat Peal was stationed in the Shetland Islands and sent sweaters made from Shetland wool back to the shop. When peace returned he made cashmere the principal fibre, and he built a following in America through catalogues and regular trips to New York and Boston. By the mid 1980s the business belonged to the businessman and philanthropist Chuck Feeney. A factory opened in Hawick in 1990, but trading weakened and the original company closed in 2006.
In 2007 the Yorkshire businessman Adam Holdsworth bought the N.Peal name. He had spent more than 25 years in cashmere manufacturing and chose to make the collections in Mongolia and China, close to the fibre. He reopened and refitted the Burlington Arcade shop, which had a full Deco-inspired refurbishment in 2013, and N.Peal opened on Madison Avenue in New York in 2018.
Is N.Peal good quality?
Cashmere quality comes down to three things: the length of the fibre, its fineness and how the yarn is spun and knitted. N.Peal buys from goats in Inner Mongolia, where the fibres are among the longest and finest anywhere, and it sets its own standards for colour, fineness and length. Long fibres pill less and soften with wear rather than thinning. You feel it in the weight of a 3-ply roll neck and in the even surface of a superfine knit. Much of the current women's collection is organic cashmere, coloured with organic dyes and washed with organic detergents. Read more in what Mongolian cashmere is.
Where is N.Peal made?
N.Peal designs in London, runs the business from Beamsley in North Yorkshire and makes its collections in Mongolia and China, in a supply chain it describes as goat to garment. The cashmere itself comes from Inner Mongolia. That integration is why the brand can trace a jumper back to the herders who raised the goats.
Is N.Peal worth the price?
N.Peal sits above high street cashmere and below the Italian houses. A classic round neck jumper is the entry point; heavy cable knits, double-face pieces and fur-trimmed outerwear sit higher. Compared with Brunello Cucinelli, N.Peal is more focused on cashmere itself and less on tailoring. Compared with high street cashmere, the yarn is longer, denser and better finished. Our guide to the best cashmere brands sets them side by side.
