Is SIR the Label Good Quality? A Fabric by Fabric Review

0

Is SIR the Label good quality? Judged on what the clothes are made of, yes. Across the SIR. pieces on Coveti, most dresses are 100% silk, the knits are merino, mohair and alpaca, the jeans are rigid organic cotton, and the belts are cowhide leather, several of them made in Australia. This guide goes through the fabrics category by category, so you can decide whether the price matches the make.

Silk dresses and tops

Silk is the backbone of SIR. The Aries Long Sleeve Gown, the Isla Cowl Back Gown, the Yasmine Mini Dress and the Strobe chiffon tops are all 100% silk. The brand uses several silk finishes: satin on the Aries and Sorrento, matte crepe on the Isla and Sona, heavyweight silk on the Yasmine, and semi-sheer chiffon on the Strobe pieces.

Some printed dresses use a silk and viscose blend, typically 30% to 45% silk. The Phillipa Slip Dress is 30% silk and 70% viscose, which drapes like silk and costs less. If pure silk matters to you, check the composition on each product page, where Coveti lists it in full.

Most SIR. silk is cut on the bias. Bias cutting uses more fabric and more skill than cutting on the straight grain, because the fabric stretches as it is handled. It is the reason SIR. dresses move and drape the way they do.

Knitwear

  • The Ayana sweater, cardigan, knit dress and flared pant are 100% merino wool, with the knit dress and pant in a double faced extra fine merino.
  • The Marius and Daisy knits are a mohair, wool and cotton blend.
  • The Lise Cardigan is 78% alpaca.
  • The Olea Sweater and the Mikkel tanks are 100% merino.
  • The Aela Cardigan is 70% cotton and 30% silk.

Tailoring

SIR. suiting is a wool blend in most cases. The Mathias and Rivoli are around 50% wool with polyester and a little stretch. The Belle is 65% wool. The Dylan is a smooth suiting with 40% wool, fully lined. These are practical blends: they hold their shape, resist creasing and recover after wear, which pure wool suiting at this price would not. The Astrine and Viona use polyester led suiting with a soft hand, so choose Dylan, Mathias and Belle if you prefer a higher wool content.

Denim and cotton

SIR. jeans are rigid organic cotton with no stretch. The Classic Straight Leg Jean is Oeko-Tex 100 certified, and the Stella Wide Leg Jean in Washed White uses Good Earth Cotton grown in Australia. Summer pieces use cotton poplin, linen and cotton voile, and the Alessandra dress is pure linen.

Leather

The Candela Leather Jacket is 100% lamb leather, and the Tomi Bomber and Tomi Wrap Midi Skirt are 100% leather, fully lined. SIR. belts are cowhide with a custom buckle, and the Molinier and Rocco belts are made in Australia. The Macrame Bag is the exception, in a woven faux leather.

Swimwear

SIR. bikinis are 76% nylon and 24% spandex, fully lined. That high spandex share gives a close fit and good recovery. The one pieces use a thicker scuba lycra. See the SIR swimwear guide for care advice, which matters more for swim than for anything else.

Accessories

The sunglasses are handcrafted in Italian Mazzuchelli acetate, a respected acetate maker. The Signature Huggie Earrings come in sterling silver and in 14K gold plate. The Suni earrings and Baez cuff are plated brass set with natural stone.

Where SIR. is less strong

To be fair: some pieces use synthetic blends. The Arla taffeta pieces are 90% nylon, the Elm halter tops are polyester and elastane, and a few suiting fabrics are polyester led. These are design choices for shape and stretch rather than shortcuts, but if you want natural fibres only, read the composition first. Many SIR. silk pieces are also unlined and dry clean only, which adds to the cost of ownership.

Is SIR. worth the price?

For the silk dresses, the knits and the leather, yes. A 100% silk bias cut gown at $960 to $1,160 sits well against comparable Australian labels. For the synthetic pieces, the value is in the cut more than the cloth. Our advice is to spend on SIR. silk and knitwear, and to treat the rest as a matter of taste. For context, see brands like SIR the Label.

Editor’s note: what convinces me about SIR. is the silk. Pure silk, cut on the bias, at this price, is not common.

How to make SIR. last

  • Dry clean silk unless the label says otherwise, and store it folded in tissue.
  • Fold knits, never hang them. SIR. specifically says to store knits folded.
  • Hand wash swimwear cold after every swim.
  • Keep leather away from heat and condition it once a season.
