Leather Trousers for Women: 5 Shapes and How to Wear Them

0

Leather trousers for women are trousers cut from tanned animal hide, usually lambskin, nappa and cow leather, built with the same waistband, pockets and seams as a wool pair but with a weight and surface that cloth cannot copy. This guide starts with the new 16 Arlington Alcea Trouser in Black Leather, a balloon shape from the London label, and sets it beside the leather pairs other houses have on Coveti now. The wider edit sits in our guide to 16 Arlington trousers.

The shape you choose matters as much as the hide. Below we cover leg shapes, fit, styling and care.

What makes a good pair of leather trousers

Three things decide whether a pair lasts. The first is the hide: a supple leather drapes and softens with wear, while a stiff one creases hard behind the knee. The second is the lining. A lined pair slides on more easily, sits away from the skin and keeps its shape through a long day. The third is the seaming. Leather cannot be pressed into shape the way wool can, so the seams do the structural work, and well-placed seams make a leg look longer.

The Alcea shows all three. 16 Arlington cuts it from black leather with a 100% viscose lining, and piped seams run along the front and back to create clean, elongated lines. It has four pockets and belt loops at the waist, and it is made in the United Kingdom.

Leg shapes: balloon, barrel, straight and flare

Balloon. Full through the thigh and knee, then drawn in towards the ankle. 16 Arlington describes the Alcea as a tailored piece with a balloon fit, and its product page lists it as a regular fit. For more on the shape, read our guide to balloon pants.

Barrel. A curved leg that bows out at the knee and comes back in at the hem. In leather the curve holds its line well. Two examples on Coveti are the Rotate Birger Christensen Barrel Leg Leather Pants in Black and the Nour Hammour Barrel Pants Softly Sculpted Leather Pants. Our guide to barrel leg trousers covers the shape across fabrics.

Straight and five-pocket. The easiest first pair. The Max Mara Pesca Five-Pocket Nappa Leather Trousers in Black follow a jeans pattern, and the Toteme Easy leather trousers in Black keep the line plain.

Wide and flared. For a longer, more fluid leg, see the Yves Salomon Wide Lambskin Leather Trousers in Black and the Magda Butrym Flared leather pants in black.

How leather trousers should fit

Leather gives a little with wear, especially lambskin, so a pair should feel close but never tight at the waist on the first try. Sit down in them. If the waistband digs in when seated, take the next size, because the hide will not stretch around the waist the way it relaxes through the seat and thigh.

Shape changes the rules. A balloon leg like the Alcea needs room through the hip so the volume falls from the right place, and the taper should sit at the ankle rather than mid calf. Check the length in the shoes you will wear most: leather does not break softly over the foot like wool, so a pair that is too long bunches at the hem. 16 Arlington makes the Alcea in UK 6, 8, 10 and 12.

How we measured. Lining, origin, shape and sizes for the Alcea come from the 16 Arlington product page. Leg shape for the other pairs is taken from the product name only, and their colours and sizes come from the Coveti catalogue on 07 November 2026. Where a house has not given us a detail, the cell says so. We did not re-measure any trouser.

How to wear leather trousers

For work. Treat black leather like a dark wool trouser. A fine knit, a crisp shirt and a long camel coat take the edge off the shine. The Alcea’s piping and belt loops already read as tailoring, so a slim belt finishes it.

For evening. This is where 16 Arlington’s feather and sequin eveningwear comes in. A sequin top over a balloon leg balances volume against sparkle; browse our feather tops for the softer version.

At the weekend. Brown and burgundy leather feel more relaxed than black. Try the By Malina Paige Leather Trousers in Burgundy with a grey sweatshirt and flat boots.

Shoes. Pointed boots suit a straight leg. A balloon and barrel leg want a slimmer shoe at the ankle, so a heeled mule and a sleek loafer work better than chunky trainers.

16 Arlington also has the Ivlia Trousers in Leather and an earlier Alcea Trouser on Coveti.

How to care for leather trousers

16 Arlington labels the Alcea specialist leather clean only, and that is the safe rule for most lined leather. Never put leather in the washing machine. Hang the pair on a padded hanger with room around it, away from radiators and damp. If the leather gets wet, blot it and let it dry slowly at room temperature. Never iron leather.

Leather trousers around the world

US. Leather pants is the American term. US sizes run two below UK, so a UK 8 is a US 4 and an EU 36. Leather suits the cold months from Chicago to New York, and a lined pair is easier on long days in heated offices.

UK. Black leather carries through autumn and winter with knitwear and a wool coat.

EU. In France look for pantalon en cuir, in Italy pantaloni in pelle. EU sizes run 28 above UK, so a UK 10 is an EU 38.

GCC. Leather suits the cooler winter evenings in Dubai, Riyadh and Doha. A lined pair with a light silk top works for dinners and indoor events where air conditioning runs cool.

Frequently asked questions

Are leather trousers in style for 2026?

Yes. Balloon and barrel shapes are the newer options this autumn, while straight black leather remains the classic.

Should leather trousers be tight?

Close at the hip and seat, never tight at the waist. Leather relaxes slightly with wear, but the waistband will not stretch much.

What is a balloon fit trouser?

A trouser that is full through the thigh and knee and drawn in towards the ankle. The 16 Arlington Alcea Trouser is cut in a balloon fit.

How do you clean leather trousers?

Take them to a specialist leather cleaner. The Alcea is labelled specialist leather clean only, and leather should never be machine washed.

What shoes go with leather trousers?

Pointed boots with a straight leg, and a slimmer heeled mule with balloon and barrel shapes.

Are lined leather trousers better?

A lining makes leather easier to put on and more comfortable against the skin. The Alcea has a 100% viscose lining.
