Organza Gowns: What They Are, How to Choose and 10 to Buy
An organza gown is a floor-length dress made from organza, a thin, crisp, sheer plain weave that holds volume, so tiers and ruffles stand away from the body instead of falling flat. Our designer evening gowns edit holds the range, the Mary Katrantzou brand page carries the tiered Eros organza gowns from Resort 2027, and our guide to draped gowns covers the softer, fluid alternative.
Key facts
- Organza is a thin, crisp, sheer plain weave that holds volume in tiers and ruffles.

This guide explains what organza is, how to choose an organza gown and how to wear one to a black tie event. The picks lead with Mary Katrantzou, then widen to organza gowns and dresses from other houses at Coveti.
What is organza?
Organza is a plain weave, the simplest over-under structure, made with tightly twisted yarns. The twist gives it a crisp hand and a light stiffness, so it keeps the shape it is cut into. It is sheer, which is why gowns often use it as an overlayer, a sleeve and a bodice panel, and it catches light at the surface. Organza was first woven in silk; today it is also made in polyester, which is crisper and easier to care for.
That crispness is the reason organza suits a tiered ruffle gown. Each tier stands out from the one above, so the skirt has volume without a heavy petticoat underneath.
How to choose an organza gown
- Fibre. Silk organza is softer; polyester organza is crisper. The Eros gowns and the Daphine top are 100% polyester organza, and the house does not call them silk.
- Sheerness. Check where the organza is sheer. The Eros has a sheer organza bodice, so plan what you wear underneath.
- Volume. Tiers and ruffles in organza add width at the hem. If you want a slimmer line, look for a single layer and a column shape.
- Back. Many organza gowns are open at the back. The Eros has an open back that ties closed.
- Print. Organza takes a print well, and the sheer weave lets light pass through the colour. The Eros is printed in the Kintsugi Myth artwork.
The organza gowns to buy
1. Eros Gown Kintsugi Jasper
The Eros Gown Kintsugi Jasper has a sheer organza bodice that drops into tiers of printed organza ruffles, and an open back that ties closed. It is 100% polyester organza, printed in the Kintsugi Myth Jasper colourway, where a tree winds its branches around the body and rose pink and caramel mist drifts across the horizon. It is the tiered ruffle gown of the season.
2. Eros Gown Kintsugi Azurite Embroidered
The Eros Gown Kintsugi Azurite Embroidered is the same tiered organza shape in the Azurite colourway, where a river runs through waterfalls into marbled waves with nymphs and fragments of classical architecture on its banks. It is also 100% polyester organza.
3. Daphine Top Kintsugi Jasper
The Daphine Top Kintsugi Jasper is a sheer organza top with an elongated shape and an open back fastened with ties. It is the way to wear organza without a full gown: over the matching Thalia Trousers Kintsugi Jasper, which sit high and fall straight through a long leg.
4. Etta Gown Kintsugi Azurite Embroidered
The Etta Gown Kintsugi Azurite Embroidered is the structured contrast, and it is not organza. The house lists it as 100% polyester, with a strapless corseted bodice embroidered in sequins above a full navy skirt. Choose it when you want a fitted bodice and a smooth skirt in place of sheer tiers.
5. Orchid Gold Metal Organza Gown
The Oscar de la Renta Orchid Gold Metal Organza Gown is the gold metal organza option, with an orchid motif by its name.
6. Heather Floral Organza Gown
The Markarian Heather Floral Organza Gown is a blue floral organza gown.
7. Isabeau Floral Organza Gown
The Markarian Isabeau Floral Organza Gown is a second floral organza gown from the same house.
8. Layered Organza Dress in Space Cherry
The Saiid Kobeisy Layered Organza Dress in Space Cherry uses layers of organza, the same principle as tiers, in a red colourway.
9. Fleurine Backless Organza Dress in Violet Leaf
The Ulla Johnson Fleurine Backless Organza Dress in Violet Leaf is the backless organza route.
10. V-Neck Devore Striped Organza Dress
The Gemy Maalouf V-Neck Devore Striped Organza Dress combines organza with devore stripes and a V neck.

How to wear an organza gown
An organza gown carries volume, so the accessories should take up little space. The sheer bodice also needs a plan for what goes underneath.
- Underneath. Under a sheer organza bodice, a slip in a skin tone keeps the print the focus; a dark slip makes the sheer layer read as a shadow.
- Jewellery. A tiered ruffle skirt and a printed bodice need little else. A pair of earrings and one ring are enough.
- Shoes. Tiers that skim the floor want a heel that lifts the hem clear. Try the gown with the shoes before the event.
- Cover. For a cold evening, a long coat over the top works; the Hito coat in emerald jacquard is the house option, though its colour story differs from the Kintsugi prints.
- As separates. The Daphine organza top over the Thalia Trousers Kintsugi Jasper gives the sheer look for a dinner that does not need a gown.
Is an organza gown right for black tie?
Yes. A floor-length organza gown sits squarely in black tie, and the volume of a tiered ruffle skirt reads formal. For a wedding, check the colour against any dress code and the bride’s wishes, then see our guide to black tie wedding guest dresses and winter wedding guest dresses for more.
Organza gowns around the world
In the US, an organza gown suits galas, black tie weddings and holiday events from autumn to New Year. In the UK, organza works for winter balls and summer garden weddings alike, with a coat for the walk between car and venue in the colder months. Across Europe, the light weight of organza makes it a good choice for summer weddings on the Mediterranean as well as winter galas in northern cities.
In the Gulf, an organza gown with a sheer bodice is usually worn with a covering layer for formal events, and the light cloth suits warm evenings outdoors. In Asia, organza gowns appear at weddings and formal dinners across Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo and Seoul, where the light cloth suits warm evenings.
Sizing an organza gown
Mary Katrantzou sizes in UK, so a UK 8 is a US 4, an IT 40 and a FR 36. Letter-sized styles run XS to XL, and on the house chart XS sits at a UK 6. The house gives no advice on sizing up and down for most pieces, so take your usual size; the one exception this season is the Kira kaftan, which the house says runs big by one to two sizes. The models are 178 cm tall and wear a UK 8. Full charts are in our Mary Katrantzou size guide. Organza has no stretch, so match the bust measurement, and for the strapless Etta, check the bodice fit against the chart closely.
