About Patou
Patou is a French luxury house founded
in Paris in 1914 by Jean Patou, the couturier who put women in dresses without corsets, shortened the
skirt, built a sports line meant to be worn in town, and dressed the tennis champion Suzanne Lenglen.
Between 1919 and 1924 the house’s revenue grew thirtyfold, and in 1930 Patou created Joy, sold as the
most expensive perfume in the world. After the founder’s death in 1936 the maison passed through some
of the great names in fashion, Marc Bohan, Karl Lagerfeld, Michel Goma, Jean Paul Gaultier, Angelo
Tarlazzi and Christian Lacroix, before the couture activity stopped in 1987.
LVMH acquired the fashion business in 2018, dropped the first name, and relaunched the maison simply as
Patou. Guillaume Henry led the artistic direction from that relaunch until February 2026, rebuilding
the house around a light, joyful ready-to-wear line rather than couture. The atelier sits on the
Île de la Cité in Paris, a few steps from Notre-Dame. Patou states that more than 60% of
its ready-to-wear is made with organic cotton, recycled fibres and recycled wool, that its jersey is
100% organic cotton made in Portugal, that it uses no fur and makes its handbags only from upcycled
leather, and that the collection is mainly produced in Europe. Every piece carries a QR code that
traces the workshop that made it.
