- For the office: Layer the Lo Smanicato over a merino polo and tailored chinos.
- For the weekend: Keep the palette tonal around the Grey and let the fabric do the talking. Dark denim, a fine knit and clean leather trainers are enough.
- For travel: Herno builds its pieces to pack and recover well, so this Jackets works on a long-haul flight and straight into a dinner on arrival.
- Layering: Herno sizes its outerwear to sit over a knit without pulling at the shoulder. If you plan to wear heavy layers underneath, check the garment measurements in the size guide first.

About Herno
Herno was founded in 1948 by Giuseppe Marenzi and his wife Alessandra Diana in Lesa, a small town in Piedmont on Lake Maggiore. The name comes from the Erno, the river that runs through Lesa into the lake. The first Herno pieces were raincoats in cotton treated with castor oil, made for a damp lakeside climate. Through the 1950s the company added cashmere coats, and in 1968 it opened stores in Osaka and Tokyo. For years it also made outerwear for other luxury houses before putting its own name first.
From the 1980s Herno built its reputation on down jackets and parkas in very light nylon, filled with natural down. Claudio Marenzi, the founders’ son, took over in 2007 and refocused the business on the Herno label, with a technical line called Laminar alongside the main collection. The Lesa headquarters now runs largely on its own solar power. Since 2020 the house has added knitwear, accessories and trainers, so a full Herno wardrobe now goes well beyond the coat.
“Herno is the quiet answer to winter dressing. The Lo Smanicato in Light Taupe is the kind of piece a man buys once and wears for years, because it looks considered over a suit and relaxed over a knit.”
Gemma Deeks, Fashion Editor at Coveti
How Herno Compares
Men weighing up the Herno Lo Smanicato in Light Taupe usually compare it with a few other outerwear names.
Moncler is the best-known luxury down brand, and its pieces are bolder and more logo-led. Herno keeps the branding to a small metal plate and puts the emphasis on fabric and cut.
Canada Goose is built for extreme cold first, so it is heavier and more expedition in feel, where Herno is lighter and designed for the city.
Brunello Cucinelli shares the Italian quiet-luxury approach at a higher price, with more emphasis on cashmere tailoring than technical outerwear.
