Saint Laurent Sac de Jour Size Guide: Nano to Large

0

The Saint Laurent Sac de Jour runs from a 21.8cm Nano to a 40cm Large, which is the widest size range of any bag the house makes. The names are sequential and the steps are even, so this is one of the easier luxury size ladders to buy from once you know the numbers. Here they are, straight from Saint Laurent.

Sac de Jour size chart

Saint Laurent gives dimensions as width by height by depth. The house publishes some pages in centimetres and some in inches, so both are converted here for comparison.

Size Width Height Depth
Nano 21.8cm / 8.6in 17.8cm / 7in 10.4cm / 4.1in
Baby 25.9cm / 10.2in 19.8cm / 7.8in 13cm / 5.1in
Small 32cm / 12.6in 25.5cm / 10in 15.5cm / 6.1in
Medium 35.8cm / 14.1in 26.9cm / 10.6in 19.3cm / 7.6in
Large 40cm / 15.7in 31cm / 12.2in 20cm / 7.9in

Note the depth column. The Sac de Jour is a structured tote with accordion sides, so depth is what actually determines capacity here, and it nearly doubles between the Nano and the Small.

Which Sac de Jour size to buy

Nano

A top-handle in miniature, carried in the hand, and on a long strap. It takes a phone, a cardholder and a lipstick. Buy it as an evening bag and as a second bag for travel, not as a first Sac de Jour.

Baby

The most popular size and the one most people mean when they say Sac de Jour. At 25.9cm wide and 13cm deep it holds a wallet, a phone, sunglasses and a compact umbrella. It reads as a real handbag without becoming a work bag.

Small

The step from Baby to Small is the biggest jump in the range: 6cm wider and 2.5cm deeper. The Small takes a tablet and a slim folder, and the 48cm strap drop means it can be worn cross-body when your hands are full. This is the size to buy if you want one bag for work and weekends.

Medium

At 19.3cm deep, the Medium is the first size that swallows a laptop with room left over. The proportions stay elegant because the height only grows 1.4cm from the Small, so it reads as a considered tote rather than a briefcase.

Large

40cm wide and 20cm deep. This is luggage in the best sense, and it is the size to take on a plane. Be honest about weight before you commit, because a structured calfskin tote at this scale is heavy before you put anything in it.

How the Sac de Jour wears

The structure is the point. Rigid calfskin, five metal feet and accordion sides mean the bag holds its rectangle whether it is full and when it is empty, which is the opposite of a soft hobo. It stands up on a desk and on the floor, and it protects what is inside.

The trade-off is that it does not compress. A Sac de Jour takes exactly the space its measurements say it takes, so size up rather than hoping a smaller one will stretch.

Every size above the Nano comes with a detachable shoulder strap alongside the top handles, so the same bag works carried and worn.

Care

Saint Laurent finishes the Sac de Jour in calfskin with brass hardware and a detachable padlock in its own leather case. Keep the padlock cased when it is not in use, since loose hardware is the usual cause of scratches on the front panel. Store the bag stuffed and upright so the accordion sides keep their shape.
