What Is MM6? MM6 Maison Margiela Explained

MM6 is the second womenswear line of Maison Margiela, the Paris house Martin Margiela founded in 1988. It launched in 1997, takes the house’s ideas into easier everyday clothes, and is best known for the origami-folded Japanese bag, Anatomic ballet flats and numeric T-shirts. Coveti now carries the full MM6 Maison Margiela edit, from the Leather Japanese Bag Classic Medium in Black to the ballet flats and jeans that define the line.

What does MM6 stand for?

MM stands for Maison Margiela and 6 is the line’s number. Since the late 1990s every Margiela label has carried a row of numbers from 0 to 23, with one circled to show which line the piece belongs to. The diffusion womenswear line was number 6, so it was first known as Line 6, then MM6, and today MM6 Maison Margiela. You still see the numbers everywhere: printed across the numeric T-shirts, stamped on bag handles and woven into the elastic of the Anatomic shoes.

Is MM6 the same as Maison Margiela?

MM6 is part of Maison Margiela, but it is a separate collection with its own design studio, shows and price point. The main line is more conceptual and more expensive. MM6 borrows the same ideas, linings worn on the outside, trompe l’oeil and the blank label, and turns them into denim, jersey and bags you can wear every day. The easiest way to tell them apart is at the back of the garment: Maison Margiela pieces carry four white stitches, MM6 pieces carry a single horizontal line of white stitches. Our full comparison is in Maison Margiela vs MM6.

A short history of MM6

Martin Margiela built his house on anonymity and on showing how clothes are made. In 1997 the studio added a second women’s line aimed at a younger customer, with simpler fabrics and lower prices but the same wit. The house has been owned by the Italian group OTB since 2002, and MM6 grew alongside it into a full wardrobe of ready-to-wear, bags and shoes. Its breakthrough accessory came in Autumn Winter 2009, when the triangular Japanese bag first appeared. It has been remade every season since.

The MM6 signatures

  • The white stitch line: a short horizontal row of white stitches at the back of the neck, waist, heel and bag.
  • Numeric artwork: the label numbers 0 to 23 used as a print, an embroidery and an elastic.
  • The Japanese bag: an origami-inspired triangle with press studs at the edges that change its shape.
  • Anatomic shoes: ballet flats, boots and mules on a rounded toe and a cylindrical heel. See our MM6 shoes guide.
  • Trompe l’oeil and linings: lining-look slip dresses such as the Double Layer Lining-Look Slip Dress in Blue, and prints that imitate seams.
  • Reworked denim: jeans with twisted seams, painted surfaces and inverted pockets. See MM6 jeans.

Is MM6 a luxury brand?

MM6 is a designer brand with luxury construction at the more accessible end of the Margiela family. Most of the ready-to-wear and the shoes are made in Italy, and of the 302 MM6 pieces Coveti is adding this season, 123 carry a Made in Italy label, with jersey made in Portugal and some bags made in Spain. Prices sit below the main Maison Margiela line, which is why MM6 is often the first Margiela piece people buy.

What to buy first

Start with one piece that carries the idea clearly. The Faux Leather Japanese Bag Classic Small in Black is the classic entry point, a numeric T-shirt is the simplest, and the Nappa Anatomic Numeric Ballerinas in Black is the shoe most people recognise. For winter, add a trench coat such as the Cotton Trench Coat in Black. More ideas are in our MM6 Autumn Winter 2026 edit.

MM6 collaborations

MM6 has a long record of collaborations. The best known today is MM6 x Salomon, which reworks trail-running shoes and clothing, and the line has also worked with Supreme and Timex. These pieces sell quickly, and Coveti stocks the Salomon range while it lasts.

Frequently asked questions

What is MM6?

MM6 Maison Margiela is the second womenswear line of the Paris house Maison Margiela. It launched in 1997 and makes ready-to-wear, bags and shoes in a more everyday register than the main line.

What does the 6 in MM6 mean?

It is the line number on the Margiela label. Every label carries the numbers 0 to 23, and the diffusion womenswear line was number 6.

Is MM6 real Maison Margiela?

Yes. MM6 is designed by Maison Margiela and owned by the same group, OTB. It is a separate collection with lower prices, not a licence.

How can you tell MM6 from Maison Margiela?

Look at the back. MM6 carries one line of white stitches, while Maison Margiela carries four white stitches holding a blank label.

Where is MM6 made?

Most MM6 ready-to-wear and shoes are made in Italy. Some jersey is made in Portugal and some bags in Spain, as stated on each label.

Is MM6 worth it?

For a first Margiela piece, yes. The Japanese bag and the Anatomic ballet flats hold their design value across seasons, and the clothes are well made in Italy.
