The house in brief

Martin Margiela trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and assisted Jean Paul Gaultier before opening his own house with Jenny Meirens. He never posed for photographs and signed the work as a collective, and the blank label held by four white stitches became the house mark. The Italian group OTB has owned Maison Margiela since 2002, Martin Margiela left in 2009 and the house name was shortened from Maison Martin Margiela in 2015. The editor’s guide to buying Maison Margiela

Start with the coat. The house began with tailoring taken apart and rebuilt, and a collarless virgin wool coat with raw seams is the clearest way to wear that idea. Add a white cotton shirt with the four stitches at the collar, a washed silk satin midi skirt and a pair of bleached, spliced jeans. For evening, the taped slip dress and the bias-cut gown are the house classics. Maison Margiela sizes its women’s ready-to-wear in Italian sizes, which run four above UK sizes, so an IT 42 is a UK 10 and a US 6. Knitwear comes in letter sizes from XS to XXL, and jeans in waist sizes.
