Where Are Polène Bags Made? Ubrique, the Leathers and the Quality

Polène is a Paris brand, designed in Paris, but its bags are made in Spain. Most of the confusion online comes from mixing up three different things: where a bag is designed, where its leather comes from and where it is assembled. Here is what Polène itself says about each, checked against its product pages.

Key facts

  • Founded: in Paris in 2016 by the siblings Antoine, Mathieu and Elsa Mothay.
  • Made: by leather artisans in Ubrique, in Andalusia, southern Spain; Polène’s own Savoir-Faire pages call them “The Artisans of Ubrique”.
  • Leather: full-grain calf from certified European tanneries; product pages name Italian calf on most styles, Spanish calf on some (Boky, Shuldo, Numéro Neuf East West) and Dutch nappa on others (Osmo, Neyu).
  • Exceptions: the Nomad Solé is hand-woven and listed as made in Madagascar; the Tsubi uses certified-organic raffia from Madagascar; the Solé pearls are made in France from upcycled leather.
  • Repairs: Polène offers a repair service at cost.

Why Ubrique

Ubrique is a small town in the Sierra de Grazalema that has worked leather for generations and is known across Spain for fine leather goods. That is where Polène’s bags are cut, folded and stitched, which is why the house can do the hand-folded shapes that define it at a lower price than the Paris heritage houses.

Is Polene real leather?

Yes. The bags are full-grain calf leather from certified European tanneries, per every product page Coveti checked, in smooth, textured and nubuck finishes. Some lines add other materials on purpose: merino wool on some Numéro Neuf Large and Cyme editions, canvas on the Ilo, raffia on the Tsubi, and recycled leather cords on the Béri.

The linings

Linings vary by model and are worth checking: velvet microfiber on the Cyme and Numéro Dix, cotton on the Mokki and Numéro Neuf, Italian suede on the Boky, Shuldo, Nodde and Numéro Sept. Suede linings feel softer; microfiber and cotton are easier to keep clean.

Quality and wear

Polène leather needs little care, says the house: keep it away from long exposure to light and heat, water, oils and cosmetics, watch dye transfer from dark denim, blot it dry if it gets wet and store it in its dust bag. No cream is needed. Textured leather is the most forgiving; smooth and nubuck mark more easily. For the full verdict on value, see is Polène a luxury brand.

Designed in Paris

Design, the shapes and the folds that people recognise, happens in Paris, where the house is based. That is why Polène is described as a French brand: the identity is Parisian, while the making is Spanish. It is a common arrangement in leather goods, and it is the same split you will find at several other contemporary houses.

Buying a genuine Polene

Polène sells through its own boutiques and website and through selected retailers. The safest checks are simple: buy from an authorised source, compare the materials, lining and dimensions against the product page, and expect the leather, lining and hardware listed there. Coveti checks every piece before dispatch.

Upcycling

Several small pieces are made from offcuts of other collections: the Atla mirror and card holder, the Writer charm, the AirPods case and the Numéro Dix Micro. See Polène bag charms and accessories.
