Who Was Azzedine Alaia? The King of Cling and the House Today

Azzedine Alaia was a Tunisian-born couturier who opened his house in Paris in 1979 and showed his first ready-to-wear collection in 1980. He cut close to the body, sculpting knit and leather so precisely that the press called him the King of Cling. He worked to his own calendar, showing when a collection was ready rather than when the fashion week schedule said so. He died in 2017. The house has been owned by Richemont since 2007. Pieter Mulier was creative director from 2021 to 2026, and since his move to Versace in July 2026 the in-house studio has carried the collections. US Google searches for “azzedine alaia” run at about 3,600 a month. Coveti carries 476 new Alaia pieces, from shoes and bags to ready-to-wear.

The couturier

Alaia was born in Tunisia and trained in sculpture before he moved to Paris and into fashion. He built his reputation in the 1980s with clothes that followed the body, using stretch knits, leather and precise seaming, and was worn by women who wanted to look strong rather than decorated. He opened his own house in 1979, and his first ready-to-wear collection followed in 1980.

The King of Cling

The nickname came from the way his clothes fitted. Alaia engineered knitwear on the machine and cut leather like a second skin, with seams placed to shape the body. That idea still drives the house today: the Alaia knit dress, the corset belt and the second-skin bodysuit all come from it. The current collection still includes pieces such as the cashmere bodysuit and sculpting knit dresses.

Richemont and the house after Alaia

Richemont bought the house in 2007, and after Alaia died in 2017 it looked for a designer who could carry his ideas forward. In 2021 it appointed Pieter Mulier, a Belgian designer, as creative director.

The Mulier years, 2021 to 2026

Mulier brought Alaia to a new generation. He made the fishnet ballet flat a cult shoe, introduced bags such as Le Teckel, named after the dachshund, and Le Coeur, a three dimensional heart, and kept the second-skin knit at the centre of the clothes. He showed his final Alaia collection in March 2026 and became chief creative officer of Versace from 1 July 2026. the Alaia ballet flats guide and the Le Teckel bag guide cover the pieces he made famous.
