Alaia is the Paris house Azzedine Alaia opened in 1979, known for clothes cut close to the body, the fishnet ballet flat and sculptural bags such as Le Teckel and Le Coeur. The press called its founder the King of Cling, and the house has been owned by Richemont since 2007. Its shoes, bags and accessories are made in Italy. The house
Azzedine Alaia, a Tunisian-born couturier, opened his Paris house in 1979 and showed his first ready-to-wear collection in 1980. He sculpted knit and leather to the body and worked to his own calendar. He died in 2017. Pieter Mulier was creative director from 2021 to 2026, when he left for Versace; no successor had been named by October 2026, and the in-house studio carries the collections. Alaia uses French sizes for clothing (UK size = FR size minus 28) and Italian EU sizes for shoes, with half sizes on many styles. The house recommends half a size down in its fishnet ballet flats, half a size up in the paper straw flat and one size up in the Le Coeur 90 slingbacks and mules, the Cube mules and the Vienne slippers; other styles carry no fit advice.
