Black Tie Dress Code for Women: What to Wear

Black tie is the dress code that causes the most doubt, mostly because it is written for men. For a man it means a dinner jacket and a bow tie. For a woman the translation is a floor-length evening dress, with some room for a very formal cocktail dress, and smart evening separates. This guide sets out what black tie means for women, what black tie optional and creative black tie allow, and which Rasario pieces at Coveti meet each one on 13 October 2026.

Key facts

  • Black tie for women: a floor-length evening dress is the standard; a formal midi is accepted at many events.
  • Black tie optional: floor length, a formal midi, and evening separates all work.
  • Creative black tie: formal lengths with more colour, print and texture; a velvet maxi and a printed satin gown both fit.
  • White tie is stricter: a full-length gown, with long gloves often expected.
  • Fabric reads formality: velvet, satin, crepe and lace are evening fabrics; cotton and linen are not.

The floor-length dress

A floor-length dress is never wrong at black tie. In winter, velvet is the obvious choice: the Rasario velvet maxi with sculptural sleeves ($5,710) is closed at the front and open at the back, which suits a seated dinner. In satin, the satin slip gown ($2,310) is the plainest answer and the least expensive here; the satin maxi with a crystal embellished neck ($5,070) puts the jewellery into the dress and is ready to ship in every size.

Is a midi dress black tie?

At a black tie optional event, yes. At a formal black tie dinner, a midi works when it is clearly evening: a corset, satin, velvet, a structured skirt. The corset midi halter dress and the crystal-embellished velvet midi both clear that bar. A day midi in a soft print does not.

Separates at black tie

A corset top over a satin maxi skirt meets the dress code, and is the most modern answer. The laced satin corset over a draped satin maxi skirt with a train is as formal as a gown. See satin corset tops and satin maxi skirts.

Black tie in winter

Most black tie events fall between October and February, which changes the choice of fabric more than the choice of shape. Velvet is the winter fabric of black tie: it is warm, it absorbs light in a dark room, and it does not crease when you sit. Satin and crepe work all year but show cold and rain. Plan the journey as well as the room: a short cape, a velvet jacket and a cropped coat all sit over a floor-length dress without crushing it, and a long wool coat is fine for the street if you check it at the door. Opaque tights are not black tie; sheer black tights are acceptable with a long dress on a cold night.

Black tie at a wedding

At a black tie wedding the usual guest rules apply on top of the dress code: avoid white and ivory, and check the invitation for a colour request. A black velvet maxi is the safest answer for an evening winter wedding; a red corset midi suits a black tie optional reception. See winter wedding guest dresses for more.

Accessories for black tie

Keep jewellery to one focus, choose a small clutch, and wear a heel that lets a long hem clear the floor. Long gloves are for white tie and very formal black tie; with a strapless dress they finish the look. A short cape covers the shoulders between car and door: see velvet jackets for evening. Frequently asked questions

What does black tie mean for a woman?

A floor-length evening dress is the standard. A formal midi and evening separates are accepted at many events, especially when the invitation says black tie optional.

Can you wear a midi dress to black tie?

At black tie optional, yes. At strict black tie, choose floor length; a formal midi in satin, velvet and lace is the exception many hosts accept.

Can you wear black to a black tie event?

Yes. Black is the most common colour at black tie. At a wedding, check whether the couple has asked guests to avoid it.

What is the difference between black tie and white tie?

White tie is stricter: a full-length gown, often with long gloves. Black tie allows more choice of length and cut.

Are separates acceptable at black tie?

Yes, when both pieces are formal: a corset top over a floor-length satin skirt is as formal as a gown.

What fabric is best for a winter black tie event?

Velvet, which is warm and reads formal in candlelight. Satin and crepe work all year.

Sources and method

Checked on 13 October 2026 by Gemma Deeks, fashion editor at Coveti. Garment facts are the brand’s own product-page text; prices are Coveti’s live catalogue on that date and move with stock. Rasario sells much of its range to order, so every product page at Coveti says which sizes are ready to ship and which are made to order. Where a claim could not be checked against the sources below it was left out, and where the fitting room is giving its own advice the page says so.
