Brands Like Lisa Yang: Six Houses for Quiet Cashmere
Brands like Lisa Yang include Toteme, The Row, Khaite, Lemaire, Brunello Cucinelli and Max Mara, six houses that hang well beside the Lisa Yang cashmere house in a considered wardrobe. None of them is a copy. Lisa Yang is the one built on a single fibre, which shows in pieces like the Juniper Sweater in Black Brushed and across our cashmere sweaters edit.
If you like Lisa Yang for its cashmere, start with Brunello Cucinelli, which began with dyed cashmere in 1978. Toteme shares its city and founding year. Max Mara is the choice for coats, The Row and Khaite bring an American point of view, and Lemaire is the Paris option. Below is what each one offers and when to choose it instead.
What makes Lisa Yang distinct
LISA YANG is a Stockholm fashion house dedicated to cashmere, founded in 2014 by Lisa Yang and Samuel Stenberg, who are married. Lisa Yang grew up near Inner Mongolia, where her parents were involved in textile production, and as a girl she visited factories and cashmere herders. The product pages put the result in one line: designed in Stockholm, crafted in Inner Mongolia.
The house grew without outside money. Samuel Stenberg told Monocle in December 2025: “We started with no external capital, which meant slow growth at the beginning, but word of mouth eventually helped fuel growth.” It remains independent.
The fibre also sets it apart. The house buys hand-selected Grade A cashmere, with fibres 36 millimetres long and 14 micrometres in diameter, and says longer, finer fibres resist pilling. It also says every 100% cashmere piece is organic cashmere, with the factory, the yarn and the woven silk GOTS certified. Each knit page states the gauge, from 3 to 18, which makes it easy to judge weight before you buy. Our guide to cashmere gauge explains how to read that number.
Colour is another difference. The design starts in Scandinavia, but the house resists the minimalist label, and Lisa Yang told Monocle in December 2025: “We like colour too much to be considered minimalists.” The Gudrun Sweater in Dark Cocoa Jacquard, a Nordic Fair Isle knit, and the Tinna Stripes Sweater in Sanderling and Deep Navy show it plainly.
The house also keeps a set of Signatures, pieces carried from season to season and signed with the Rou stamp, the brand symbol; Rou is the Chinese word for a gentle, soft nature. The Fride Sweater in Truffle at $680 at Coveti, the Azalea Cardigan in Black Brushed and the Azaria Trousers in Truffle are all Signatures. For the full story of the house, read who Lisa Yang is.
Toteme: the same city, the same year
Toteme was founded in Stockholm in 2014 by Elin Kling and Karl Lindman, which makes it Lisa Yang’s closest neighbour on paper. Both are Stockholm houses from the same year, and each was started by two people.
Choose Toteme when you want to compare two takes on Stockholm design from the same moment. Stay with Lisa Yang when the knit itself is the reason you are shopping: the gauge, the fibre and the Inner Mongolia making are what the house puts first.
The Row: an American house from 2006
The Row was founded in 2006 by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, and it is American. That makes it eight years older than Lisa Yang and the earliest of the two American names here.
Choose The Row when you want an American point of view in a quiet wardrobe. Lisa Yang is the better fit when you want a house that publishes its fibre length and diameter and prints a gauge on each knit, so you can compare like with like.
Khaite: New York, from 2016
Khaite is a New York house, founded in 2016 by Catherine Holstein. It is the youngest of the six peers, two years younger than Lisa Yang.
Choose Khaite when you want a New York house with a single founder at its head. If your list is mostly cashmere knits, Lisa Yang gives you the wider spread of gauges to choose from, with heavy 3 to 7 gauge pieces for winter and fine 18 gauge for layering.
Lemaire: a Paris design pair
Lemaire is a Paris house, designed by Christophe Lemaire and Sarah-Linh Tran. Like Lisa Yang, it has two names behind it.
Choose Lemaire when Paris is the point of view you want. Choose Lisa Yang when you want a Stockholm eye with the cashmere tradition of Inner Mongolia behind it, and a house that is happy to use colour.
Brunello Cucinelli: cashmere since 1978
Brunello Cucinelli is based in Solomeo, in Umbria, and was founded in 1978. It began with dyed cashmere, so of the six peers it is the one whose story starts with the same fibre as Lisa Yang’s, 36 years earlier.
Choose Brunello Cucinelli when you want a house with a long cashmere history behind it. Choose Lisa Yang when you want a younger, independent house that names its fibre spec and makes its knits in Inner Mongolia. A 7 gauge plain knit such as the Sandy Sweater in Truffle, $720 at Coveti, is a fair place to start the comparison.
Max Mara: when the coat comes first
Max Mara was founded in 1951 by Achille Maramotti in Reggio Emilia, and it is known for coats. It is the oldest house on this list by more than two decades.
Choose Max Mara when the coat is the purchase that matters most. Lisa Yang does make coats, with a different idea behind them. The Doublé Shawl Coat in Mid Grey is woven doublé, two layers of woven fabric in 95% wool and 5% cashmere, a technique the house says was first invented in ancient China. The Rhea Coat in Graphite is 100% cashmere, and the Doublé Blazer in Mid Grey is a Signature. Doublé pieces need professional dry cleaning only.
How to choose between them
Start with what you want to buy. If it is knitwear, Lisa Yang is the house built around it, and you can pick a gauge for the season. If it is a coat, Max Mara’s reputation comes first. If the cashmere story matters to you, Brunello Cucinelli and Lisa Yang are the two whose histories start with the fibre.
Then think about the city. Two of these houses are in Stockholm, two are American, one is in Paris and two are in Italy. That says nothing about quality on its own, but it does say something about the eye behind the clothes. Our list of quiet luxury brands covers more names in the same register.
Whichever house you choose, read the label. Composition, gauge and care tell you more than a logo does. For Lisa Yang, sizing runs 00, 0, 1 and 2 for women and 3, 4 and 5 for men, and our Lisa Yang size guide maps those to the XS to L you see at Coveti.
Quiet cashmere around the world
In the US, The Row and Khaite are the home names, and Lisa Yang is the Scandinavian alternative. Coveti lists women’s Lisa Yang knits in US letter sizes from XS to L and men’s from S to XL, and prices are in US dollars. A 12 gauge piece such as the men’s Mason Sweater in Cream suits air-conditioned offices most of the year.
In the UK, Coveti is London-based and close to home. Damp autumns favour 7 and 12 gauge knits worn over a fine layer. In the EU, Lemaire, Brunello Cucinelli and Max Mara are the local houses, and Toteme shares its city with Lisa Yang.
In the GCC, the lighter gauges earn their place in cool interiors and evenings, and a doublé coat is the piece to pack for winter travel. Coveti ships worldwide, and every piece is 100% authentic.
