Who Is Lisa Yang? The Stockholm Cashmere House Explained

Lisa Yang is a Stockholm fashion house dedicated to cashmere, founded in 2014 by Lisa Yang and Samuel Stenberg. Coveti stocks 370 pieces from the Lisa Yang cashmere collection, from women’s cashmere sweaters to woven doublé tailoring, and the easiest way into it is a single knit such as the Sandy Sweater in Truffle.

In short: Lisa Yang is an independent Swedish label that works almost entirely in cashmere. The fibre comes from Inner Mongolia, close to where the founder grew up, and the design thinking comes from Stockholm. The house started in 2014 with no outside money and now sells through more than 500 retailers in 45 countries.

The founders and the Inner Mongolia connection

Lisa Yang grew up near Inner Mongolia. Her parents worked in textile production, and as a girl she visited factories and the herders who keep cashmere goats, according to a December 2025 profile in Monocle. That background matters, because the brand is built on the fibre. Lisa Yang told Monocle in December 2025: “Inner Mongolia produces the world’s best cashmere because the extreme cold causes its cashmere goats to grow exceptionally fine, long and soft undercoats”.

Samuel Stenberg, her co-founder, is also her husband; Monocle describes him that way. The couple built the label without investors. The company writes its name in capitals, LISA YANG, though in running text most people simply write Lisa Yang.

The house describes its collections as drawing on the cashmere tradition of Inner Mongolia and “the understated ease of Scandinavian design”. Every product page carries the same short line about origin: designed in Stockholm, crafted in Inner Mongolia. Shapes, proportions and colour come from Sweden. Raw fibre, spinning and knitting happen close to the goats.

How big is Lisa Yang?

The business is larger than its quiet tone suggests. Monocle reported turnover of EUR 20.8m in 2024, with sales up 900 per cent over four years, and stockists numbering more than 500 retailers in 45 countries. Samuel Stenberg told the magazine the couple started with no external capital, so growth was slow at first until word of mouth carried it.

For a buyer, independence means that the same founders still choose the yarn and approve the knits. The house says Lisa Yang has weekly contact with its suppliers and visits them every quarter.

What makes the cashmere different

The house uses hand-selected Grade A cashmere with fibres 36 millimetres long and 14 micrometres in diameter. Longer, finer fibres hold together better in the yarn, and the brand’s Cashmere Lab notes that this is what helps a knit resist pilling. For scale, cashmere fibres average under 19 microns, while a human hair sits somewhere between 60 and 120.

The goats are combed by hand each spring as they shed their winter undercoat. An average sweater needs the hair of two to five goats. The house also points out that cashmere fibres are hollow, and it says they insulate “over eight times better than wool”.

On sourcing, the house says every 100% cashmere piece it makes is organic cashmere, and that the factory, the cashmere yarn and the woven silk are all GOTS certified. Those are Lisa Yang’s own statements, published on its sustainability page.

Not every piece is pure cashmere. Across the Coveti edit, 272 pieces are 100% cashmere. Another 44 are a 70% cotton, 30% cashmere blend, which is lighter and suits warm climates. There are 21 pieces in 77% cashmere with 23% silk, 17 in pure silk, and 14 woven doublé pieces in 95% wool with 5% cashmere.

Knits, gauges and the house techniques

Gauge is the number of stitches per inch, and Lisa Yang prints it on every knit. A higher number means a finer fabric. The house treats 12 gauge as its year-round plain knit, 18 gauge as featherweight fine knit, and 3 to 7 gauge as the heavy knits for colder months. Our guide to cashmere gauge and ply takes each number in turn.

Beyond plain knit, the house has a long list of named techniques. Double Face Cashmere merges two knitted layers into one, so it feels soft like knit but holds a shape like a weave. Fisherman Rib knits into the stitch below and traps air, which makes it very warm. Full Needle Milano shows a fine vertical rib on one side and a diagonal on the reverse. Knitted Pankou borrows the knot button of the qipao and works it into the knit.

The more sculptural ideas include 3D Structures, filled with raw cashmere fibre rather than a synthetic filler, and Cashmere Fringes. The Mille Sweater in Black, a 3 gauge fringed knit, is the most dramatic example at $2,490 at Coveti. The Alathea Sweater in Black shows the 3D work in a more wearable form.

For Brushed Cashmere, the house spent years refining the washing and finishing, and it controls water temperature and yarn tension closely to raise a lofty, cloud-like surface. The Juniper Sweater in Black Brushed is the clearest example. Our piece on what brushed cashmere is and how to wear it covers the finish in detail.

The Signatures and the Rou stamp

Some designs are carried from one season to the next. The house calls them Signatures and marks each with the Rou stamp, its brand symbol. Rou is the Chinese word for a gentle, soft nature.

The Signatures cover most of a wardrobe. In knitwear there are the Juniper, Fride and Lory sweaters and the Azalea Cardigan in Black Brushed, at $1,040 at Coveti. The Fride Sweater in Truffle is a 5 gauge plain knit with real weight to it. Lighter layers include the Vivian Top in Salt, in the cotton and cashmere blend. Skirts are the Clare and the Dolly; the Clare Skirt in Dark Oak is worked in Paddington Rib. Trousers are the Azaria and the Wrenda, and the tailoring signature is the Doublé Blazer in Mid Grey.

This is the group to learn first. The house keeps returning to these pieces, so colours and fits stay consistent from year to year.

Woven doublé tailoring

Lisa Yang is known for knitwear, though it also makes coats, blazers, skirts and trousers in a woven doublé. Product pages say the technique was “first invented in ancient China”. It is two layers of woven fabric joined into one cloth. The doublé pieces are 95% wool and 5% cashmere, and the care instruction is professional dry cleaning only.

These pieces follow French sizes, 32 to 42, which Coveti sells as 4 UK to 14 UK. The Lisa Yang size guide explains how the knit sizes 0, 1 and 2 compare with the tailoring sizes.

A designer who does not call herself a minimalist

It is easy to file Lisa Yang beside other Scandinavian labels with a pared-back look. She resists the label. Lisa Yang told Monocle in December 2025: “We like colour too much to be considered minimalists.” The palette at Coveti bears that out. Alongside black, navy and graphite there are truffle, dark oak, dark fern, berry and soft sky.

Of the women’s pieces at Coveti, 123 are cut relaxed and 115 regular. In practice that means a boxy sweater can sit next to a slim rib top in the same order and both look intended. For more houses in this register, see our list of quiet luxury brands.

What Coveti carries

Coveti stocks 370 pieces on its Lisa Yang brand page: 277 for women and 93 for men. Every one is in stock at full price, and every one is 100% authentic. The biggest group is women’s cashmere sweaters, followed by men’s knitwear and women’s cardigans. The table below breaks the edit down by category with the price range in each.

Menswear is a full line in its own right. The Mason Sweater in Cream, a 12 gauge plain knit, is the men’s equivalent of a first Lisa Yang purchase at $710 at Coveti. You can browse all of it under men’s cashmere knitwear.

Where to start

Most people begin with a sweater, and the Sandy is a sensible first choice. It is a 7 gauge plain knit in 100% cashmere, warm enough for winter without the bulk of a 3 gauge, at $720 at Coveti. The Heidi Sweater in Navy is the other obvious choice at that weight.

If you already own a good crew neck, try a different construction. A brushed piece has a completely different surface, and a doublé blazer adds tailoring that pairs with every knit in the line. A 70% cotton, 30% cashmere top works through spring and summer. Caring for Lisa Yang cashmere

The house advice is simple: you do not need to wash cashmere after every wear, though keeping it clean helps deter moths. Plain and fine knits can be hand washed with a cashmere detergent, and a delicate no-spin wool cycle at a maximum of 30 degrees C in a laundry bag also works. Brushed and boucle cashmere should go to a professional cleaner, as should stains.

Dry flat on a towel, never on a hanger. Store pieces folded and out of sunlight, with cedarwood balls that you replace each year. Some pilling is normal; a cashmere comb takes it off. Our guide on how to wash cashmere walks through each step.

Lisa Yang around the world

Coveti is London-based, ships worldwide and shows prices in US dollars, so the figures above are the prices every buyer sees.

In the US, sizes appear as letters, XS to L for women’s knits and S to XL for men, which matches what most American shoppers expect. Northeastern winters suit the heavy 3 to 7 gauge knits. In California, the 12 gauge plain knit is the better year-round choice.

UK buyers will find the doublé tailoring already labelled in UK sizes. A damp British autumn calls for a 7 gauge sweater under a doublé coat.

Across the EU, the French sizing on the woven pieces will feel familiar. The 3 and 5 gauge knits suit Scandinavian and Alpine winters.

In the GCC, the cotton and cashmere blend and the 18 gauge fine knits make the most sense for daytime, especially in air-conditioned offices and malls. A brushed cardigan is a good layer for desert evenings in winter.

Frequently asked questions

Who founded Lisa Yang?

Lisa Yang and Samuel Stenberg founded the label in Stockholm in 2014. The two are married, and Monocle describes Stenberg as her husband. Lisa Yang grew up near Inner Mongolia, where her parents worked in textile production, so the cashmere supply chain was familiar to her long before she started the brand.

Where is Lisa Yang cashmere made?

Lisa Yang cashmere is designed in Stockholm and crafted in Inner Mongolia, according to the brand’s product pages. The fibre comes from goats combed by hand each spring as they shed. The house says its factory, its cashmere yarn and its woven silk are all GOTS certified, and that every 100% cashmere piece is organic.

Is Lisa Yang a luxury brand?

Yes, it is a luxury knitwear label. The house uses hand-selected Grade A cashmere, with fibres 36 millimetres long and 14 micrometres fine. At Coveti, women’s cashmere sweaters run from $610 to $2,490. The label is independent and, by Monocle’s count, sold through more than 500 retailers in 45 countries.

What is the Rou stamp on Lisa Yang pieces?

The Rou stamp is the brand symbol, and it marks the Signatures, the designs the house carries from season to season. Rou is the Chinese word for a gentle, soft nature. Signatures include the Juniper Sweater, the Vivian Top, the Clare Skirt, the Azalea Cardigan and the Doublé Blazer.

Does Lisa Yang make menswear?

It does. Coveti carries 93 men’s pieces, mostly knitwear, plus T-shirts, shirts and trousers. Men’s sizes run 3, 4 and 5 at the house, and Coveti sells them as S to XL. The Mason Sweater, a 12 gauge plain knit, is a good first piece, and our menswear guide covers the rest of the line.

How should I wash a Lisa Yang sweater?

Hand wash plain and fine knits with a cashmere detergent, then dry them flat on a towel. A delicate no-spin wool cycle at 30 degrees C maximum, inside a laundry bag, is the alternative. Brushed and boucle cashmere need professional cleaning. Never hang a knit to dry, and comb away any light pilling.
