Couture Evening Gowns: Haute Couture vs Ready-to-Wear, and 10 to Buy
Couture Evening Gowns: Haute Couture vs Ready-to-Wear, and 10 to Buy
A couture evening gown, strictly speaking, is a haute couture gown: made to measure for one client, by hand, in a Paris atelier, by a house on the official couture calendar. In practice the word is also used for ready-to-wear gowns made by couture houses, cut from the same patterns and finished by hand in the same ateliers, but sold in standard sizes. That second kind is what you can buy online, and it is where the value is. This guide explains the difference, the houses that make both, and ten couture-house gowns at Coveti from $2,890 to $11,130.
Key facts
- Haute couture: a legally protected name in France, used only by houses on the official list; made to measure, with several fittings, in a Paris atelier.
- When it shows: Paris Haute Couture Week, every January and July.
- Couture-house ready-to-wear: gowns by the same houses in standard sizes, often hand finished, at a fraction of the price.
- Houses at Coveti that show couture: Elie Saab, Zuhair Murad, Tony Ward, Saiid Kobeisy, Giambattista Valli, Alexandre Vauthier, Schiaparelli.
- Price of the ten gowns here: $2,890 to $11,130.
- Made to order: some ready-to-wear gowns are made to order in the atelier, a halfway house between the two.
Haute couture vs ready-to-wear vs made to order
Haute couture is made for one person. A client chooses a look from the show, the atelier makes a toile to her measurements, and there are several fittings before the gown is finished. Prices are rarely published.
Ready-to-wear by a couture house is cut in standard sizes and sold through stores. The best of it uses the same embroidery workshops and the same hand finishing as the couture line.
Made to order sits between: a ready-to-wear design made in your size once you order it. Marmar Halim, for example, makes its gowns to order in the atelier.
Why Beirut matters to couture
Many of the houses that show couture in Paris are Lebanese. Elie Saab has defined red-carpet glamour since 1982. Tony Ward finishes its gowns by hand in Beirut. Saiid Kobeisy, whose couture collections have been shown in Paris, including Rebirth for Spring Summer 2026 at the Ritz Paris and Passage Prive for Fall Winter 2026, runs its studio and atelier in Beirut. Zuhair Murad and Gemy Maalouf complete a group of houses known above all for embroidery and beading. See Lebanese designers at Coveti for the full list.

How to recognise couture-level work
Hand embroidery and beading sewn from the back; seams finished by hand; a structured inner bodice that holds the gown without straps; heavy, natural cloths such as silk faille, cady, Mikado and crepe; and a lining that is as carefully finished as the outside. Our beaded gowns guide explains how to check beadwork.
