Beaded Gowns: How They Are Made, How to Wear Them, 12 to Buy
A beaded gown is an evening dress embroidered by hand with glass beads, bugle beads, sequins, pearls and crystals, usually over tulle, georgette and crepe. It is the most formal kind of gown you can wear, and the one that photographs best. Coveti has 687 beaded, crystal, sequin and embellished pieces in stock across 54 designers on 13 October 2026. This guide explains how beading is done, how to tell good work from poor, how to wear a beaded gown without looking overdressed, and twelve gowns from $1,940 to $17,010.
Key facts
- What it is: a gown embroidered with beads, sequins, pearls and crystals, by hand, usually in an atelier.
- The main technique: Luneville embroidery, worked from the back of the cloth with a fine hook on a frame, and needle beading, sewn bead by bead.
- Weight: a fully beaded gown can be several times heavier than a plain one; that weight is why it falls so straight.
- At Coveti: 687 beaded and embellished pieces from 54 designers on 13 October 2026.
- Dress codes: black tie, galas, awards and formal weddings.
- Care: specialist dry clean only; store flat, never hung.
How a gown is beaded
Most couture beading uses one of two methods. In Luneville embroidery, named after the French town where it was developed, the cloth is stretched on a frame and the embroiderer works from the underside with a fine hook, chaining sequins and beads onto the surface at speed. Tony Ward is known for hand-worked Luneville embroidery. In needle beading, each bead is sewn on separately, which is slower and lets the beader shape three-dimensional patterns. Lebanese houses, Saiid Kobeisy, Elie Saab and Tony Ward among them, are known for both.
How to tell good beading from poor
Look at the reverse: you should see thread, not glue. Run a hand gently over the surface; beads should be tight, with no loops of loose thread. Check the seams, where beading should be finished by hand across the join, not cut off. And look at the hem: on a good gown the beading thins out in a planned way, so the skirt still moves.

How to wear a beaded gown
Keep jewellery quiet. Wear earrings only, and skip the necklace if the beading reaches the neckline.
Match the bag to the cloth, not the beads. A satin clutch in the base colour of the gown looks right; a second beaded piece fights it.
Think about the room. Beading catches light, so it is perfect for evening events under artificial light and candles, and can look heavy at a daytime ceremony. For daytime, a gown with placed beading at the neckline is a better choice than all-over work.
Sit carefully. Beads catch on rough chairs and lace on other guests’ dresses. A wrap over the arm helps.
Caring for beadwork
Specialist dry clean only, and point out the beaded areas to the cleaner. Never iron over beading; steam from the inside. Store the gown flat in a box between acid-free tissue. Hanging a beaded gown for months stretches the shoulders and can pull the beads from the cloth.

Frequently asked questions
What is a beaded gown?
An evening gown embroidered with beads, sequins, pearls and crystals, usually by hand, over tulle, georgette and crepe.
Why are beaded gowns so expensive?
Because the beading is done by hand. A fully beaded gown can take an atelier many hours of work, and the beads, crystals and pearls themselves add cost.
What is Luneville embroidery?
A French technique in which beads and sequins are chained onto cloth from the reverse with a fine hook, while the cloth is stretched on a frame. Tony Ward uses it on its gowns.
Can I wear a beaded gown to a wedding?
Yes, to an evening wedding with a black-tie dress code. Avoid white and ivory, and choose placed beading over all-over work for a daytime ceremony.
How do I store a beaded gown?
Flat, between acid-free tissue, in a box. Never hang it for long periods, because the weight of the beads stretches the shoulders.
Which designers are best known for beaded gowns?
The Lebanese couture houses, Elie Saab, Tony Ward, Saiid Kobeisy, Zuhair Murad and Gemy Maalouf, along with Jenny Packham in London.
