Saiid Kobeisy couture vs ready-to-wear: what changes and what does not

The house runs three lines and a shopper should know which one she is buying. Couture is made to order to one client’s measurements through the showrooms in Beirut, Dubai, Riyadh and Paris, shown on the Paris calendar, and the hand embroidery on a piece takes about three months. Bridal couture, since 2015, works the same way and is the basis of the house’s United States trunk-show calendar. Ready-to-wear, since 2010, is cut in a standard EU 34 to 48 run and shipped from stock, and it is the only line Coveti sells. What changes

Three things. The fitting: a couture gown is cut to one body and fitted over several appointments; the ready-to-wear is cut to the house chart and fitted by the size you choose. The time: a couture piece takes months, the embroidery alone about three; the ready-to-wear ships in days. The price: couture is quoted by the showroom for the piece; the ready-to-wear at Coveti is a listed price, $3,422 at the median.

What does not change

The hand. The house said it in 2010, when the ready-to-wear launched, and it is still true on the rail: the cape from the shoulder, the bow, the cascading skirt, the fitted bodice and the placed embroidery are the same ideas cut to a size run. A ready-to-wear Kobeisy is not a diffusion line; it is the atelier’s cutting produced in EU 34 to 48. The fabrics are the same families, crepe, tulle, lace, taffeta, and the embroidery is the same vocabulary applied at a production pace. The review goes through what that looks like piece by piece.

Where the couture shows up in the ready-to-wear

Each season the ready-to-wear carries the couture’s ideas one step down.
