Feather Coats: The Designer Edit for Winter 2026

A feather coat is an evening coat made almost entirely of feathers, usually ostrich, set on a fabric base and worn over eveningwear. The newest at Coveti is the Taller Marmo Zangaro Coat in Black, built from roughly 50 metres of hand-sculpted ostrich-feather boa and lined in pure silk jacquard satin.

Most feather coat questions are practical: what the feathers are, what to wear underneath, how to keep it full after a long night. This guide answers each one, using the pieces we carry from Taller Marmo and Yves Salomon this winter.

What is a feather coat?

A feather coat is outerwear where the feathers cover the whole surface. The plumes are stitched to a base fabric one by one, in rows, in strung lengths of boa, and a lining sits inside so the shafts never touch the skin.

That is what separates it from a coat with a feather collar. On a true feather coat, the whole surface moves. Ostrich plumes have long, fine barbs that lift as you walk and settle when you stop, so the outline changes all evening.

Most designer feather coats are made for the evening, worn over a gown, a slip dress, a sharp trouser suit.

Which feather coats does Coveti carry for winter 2026?

The short answer: one full-length Taller Marmo coat, one Taller Marmo opera coat sold with its gown, and a short ostrich jacket from Yves Salomon in three colours.

Taller Marmo Zangaro Coat in Black

The Zangaro Coat arrived on 17 October 2026 as part of the Fall 2026 collection. It is oversized, and it is made from roughly 50 metres of ostrich-feather boa that the house sculpts and trims by hand. The feathers are cut back to give the coat a shape, so it reads as a coat first and as feathers second.

Inside is a pure silk jacquard satin lining with a chainmail motif, a private detail that shows only when the coat swings open. Like all Taller Marmo, it is made in Italy and it is professional dry clean only.

Taller Marmo was founded in 2013 by Riccardo Audisio and Yago Goicoechea, who met as students at the Istituto Marangoni in Milan. The label started in Dubai with fluid kaftans and now works between Milan and Dubai. Fall 2026 looks to the 1920s and the silver screen, and the Zangaro is the outerwear answer to that brief. For the full story of the collection, read our Taller Marmo Fall 2026 guide.

Taller Marmo 1920 Gown in Antique Bronze

The 1920 Gown in Antique Bronze is a two-piece look, and the coat is half the reason to buy it. A flared floor-length slip in antique bronze double viscose satin goes underneath. Over it sits a sheer cocoon opera coat in silk chiffon fil coupe, woven in Como with a baroque damask motif. Ostrich-feather boa edges the front and the wide cuffs.

The coat and slip come together. It is a lighter take on the feather coat: the plumes frame you rather than cover you, and the sheer chiffon keeps the bronze satin visible. If you want the cocoon shape explained in more depth, our guide to opera coats covers it.

Yves Salomon Short Ostrich Feather Jacket

The Yves Salomon jacket is the short version. It is made with ostrich and turkey feathers on a polyester base, with a round neckline, a hook closure and a silk lining. Coveti carries it in black, white and dark teal.

Yves Salomon is a Paris fur house, so its feather work sits next to shearling and leather in the collection. The jacket stops around the hip, which makes it the easier piece to wear with trousers, with a midi skirt, even with dark denim for a dinner that is not black tie. What is the difference between ostrich feathers, marabou and faux feathers?

Ostrich gives length and movement, marabou gives a soft cloud of fluff, and faux feathers are synthetic fibres cut to look like either.

Ostrich plumes are long, with widely spaced barbs that sway on their own. This is the feather most eveningwear houses use for boa trims, and it is the one on every Taller Marmo piece in this guide. Marabou is a fine, downy feather, today mostly from turkeys. It sits closer to the base and looks fluffy rather than flowing. Faux feathers are made from synthetic fibres such as polyester and nylon, then cut and dyed to imitate a plume.

Feather type Look Movement Where you will see it
Ostrich Long plumes, wide barbs, a soft halo at the edge High; lifts with every step Feather coats, boa trims, gown hems
Marabou Short, downy, dense Low; flutters rather than sways Cuffs, collars, slippers, trims
Turkey Shorter, firmer feather Moderate Mixed with ostrich for body
Faux Synthetic fibres cut to imitate a plume Varies with the fibre Party pieces and costume

Read the composition line on any product page before you buy. It tells you exactly which feathers are used.

What is feather trim called?

A long, fluffy strip of feathers used as trim is called a boa. On eveningwear the two common types are the ostrich boa and the marabou boa.

A boa is made by binding feathers around a central cord, so it can be stitched along hems, cuffs and necklines. An ostrich boa is long and airy, with plumes that sway. A marabou boa is shorter and denser, with a soft, fuzzy look. Feathers sewn flat in overlapping rows, without a cord, are simply called feather trim. Taller Marmo describes every trim in this guide as ostrich-feather boa.

Is a feather coat the same as a feather jacket?

No. The difference is length, and length decides what you can wear underneath.

A feather jacket stops at the waist to the hip. It works with separates and with short dresses. A feather coat runs past the hip, usually to the thigh, the knee and beyond, and it is cut to cover a dress. An opera coat is the longest and loosest of all, made to go over a floor-length gown without crushing it.

Style Typical length Wear it with Example at Coveti

Feather coat Thigh to knee and longer, oversized Slip dresses, column dresses, tailoring Taller Marmo Zangaro Coat

How do you wear a feather coat to an evening event?

Keep everything beneath it plain, and let the feathers do the work.

A black feather coat over a black column dress is the cleanest version, and the one that photographs best. The Del Rio Dress in Emerald Green is a good partner if you want colour: an ankle-length crepe cady column with long bell sleeves, already trimmed in ostrich boa at the cuffs, so the coat and the dress speak the same language.

For black tie, a feather coat sits over a floor-length gown without any trouble, as long as the gown is slim. A very full skirt fights with an oversized coat. Our black tie dress code guide explains what the invitation expects, and the evening gowns edit has the slim shapes that work best.

For New Year’s Eve and cocktail parties, swap the gown for something short. The Yves Salomon jacket over a sequin mini is a strong look on its own. Our New Year’s Eve dresses guide has the shorter options.

A few practical notes:

  • Skip the statement necklace. Feathers at the collar hide it, and chains can catch on the barbs.
  • Choose a small, structured clutch over a chain-strap bag that rubs at the shoulder.
  • Long gloves are a good match. The Scanlan Theodore Leather Opera Gloves in Camelia add colour at the wrist without fighting the plumes, and our guide on how to wear opera gloves covers the etiquette.
  • Put perfume on before you dress, and let it dry before the coat goes on.

Which other Taller Marmo pieces have feather trim?

Ostrich-feather boa runs through the whole Fall 2026 collection, so you can wear the feather story without committing to a full coat.

If you would rather wear feathers as a dress, our guide to designer feather dresses covers the full range across labels.

What size feather coat should you buy?

Buy your usual size. Taller Marmo says its sized pieces fit true to size, and the Zangaro is cut oversized, so there is room for a dress beneath.

Taller Marmo cuts in Italian sizes, and Coveti lists them in UK sizes. The conversion is simple:

Italian (IT) UK US (approx.)
IT 36 UK 4 US 0
IT 38 UK 6 US 2
IT 40 UK 8 US 4
IT 42 UK 10 US 6
IT 44 UK 12 US 8
IT 46 UK 14 US 10
IT 48 UK 16 US 12

At source the house made the Zangaro in UK 6 to UK 10, so check the size selector on the product page for what is open. The models on the Taller Marmo site are 173 to 180 cm and wear an Italian 38. Our Taller Marmo size guide goes deeper on fit by silhouette.

Yves Salomon uses French sizing: FR 36 is UK 8 and FR 40 is UK 12. The short jacket is made in FR 32 to FR 44.

How do you store and care for a feather coat?

Hang it with space around it, keep it dry, and leave cleaning to a specialist.

Every Taller Marmo piece is professional dry clean only, and the same caution applies to any ostrich coat. Water makes plumes droop and clump, so a feather coat is not the coat for a walk in the rain. If you get caught in a shower, shake it gently and let it dry at room temperature, away from a radiator.

  • Use a wide, padded hanger so the shoulders keep their shape.
  • Store it in a breathable cotton garment bag, never plastic, with room on either side so the feathers are not crushed.
  • Keep it out of direct sunlight, which can fade dyed plumes.
  • After wearing, give it a gentle shake to lift the barbs back into place.

Frequently asked questions

What is a feather coat made of?

A feather coat is made of feathers stitched to a base fabric, with a lining inside. Most designer feather coats use ostrich plumes. The Taller Marmo Zangaro Coat uses roughly 50 metres of ostrich-feather boa with a pure silk jacquard satin lining.

Is a feather coat warm?

A feather coat is warm enough for the walk from car to door and for a cool terrace, thanks to the depth of plume and the lining. It is an evening coat, not a winter overcoat, and it should be kept out of the rain.

What is the difference between a feather coat and a feather jacket?

Length. A feather jacket stops at the waist to the hip and suits separates and short dresses. A feather coat runs longer and is cut to cover a dress, and an opera coat is the longest and loosest, made to go over a floor-length gown.

Can you wear a feather coat to a black tie event?

Yes. A long feather coat over a slim floor-length gown is correct for black tie. Keep jewellery at the ears and wrists, since feathers at the collar hide necklaces.

How do you clean a feather coat?

Take it to a professional dry cleaner with feather experience. Taller Marmo pieces are professional dry clean only. At home, shake it gently to lift the feathers and store it in a breathable cotton bag on a padded hanger.

What is feather trim called?

A long, fluffy strip of feather trim is called a boa. It is made by binding feathers around a cord. An ostrich boa is long and airy, while a marabou boa is shorter, denser and fuzzier.
