How to Wear Opera Gloves With an Evening Dress

Opera gloves are long evening gloves that reach above the elbow, and they are back at black tie. They finish a sleeveless dress, add coverage without a sleeve, and make the arm look longer. The rules for wearing them are simpler than they look, and most of them are about proportion.

This guide covers length, fit, colour, the etiquette that still applies, and how to match gloves to a dress. Several CHATS by C.Dam evening dresses are sold with matching gloves, so the work is done for you. For leather gloves in daytime, see the Coveti guide to wearing long leather gloves.

Key facts

  • Length: opera length reaches above the elbow, to the upper arm.
  • Best with: sleeveless, strapless and off-shoulder dresses.
  • Fit: smooth along the arm with a little ruching at the wrist, never baggy.
  • Colour: matching the dress gives the longest line; black and white are the classic contrasts.
  • Matching sets: 50 CHATS by C.Dam pieces at Coveti come with gloves.

Match the length to the neckline

The rule is that the less there is on the shoulder, the longer the glove can be. A strapless and off-shoulder dress takes a glove to the upper arm. A dress with a cap sleeve takes a shorter glove that stops below the elbow, so the two do not meet. A long-sleeved dress needs no glove at all.

Get the fit right

An opera glove should be smooth along the forearm and upper arm, with soft ruching at the wrist if it is meant to have any. Too loose and it slides down; too tight and it cuts in above the elbow. Jersey and stretch crepe gloves are the easiest to fit, because they give.

Choose the colour

Gloves in the same colour and fabric as the dress make the longest, cleanest line, which is why matching sets are so effective: on the Noor dress in white, the white gloves read as part of the dress. Black gloves with a white dress, and white with black, are the classic contrasts and look more formal.

The etiquette that still applies

A few rules survive. Gloves stay on for greetings and drinks, and come off to eat. Rings are worn under the glove, not over it, though a bracelet can sit over the wrist. Remove the gloves to apply lipstick, and lay them in your lap at the table.

Jewellery and bags with gloves

Keep jewellery to the ears and the neck, since the glove covers the hand and wrist. A small clutch is easier than a bag with a handle. Choose earrings in the same metal as any hardware on the dress, so the metal details read as one.
