Ear Stack Guide: How to Build One in Fine Jewellery
An ear stack is a set of earrings worn across several piercings on one ear, planned so the pieces get smaller as they climb from the lobe. The simplest way to build one is to anchor the lobe with a hoop, add a small stud above it, then finish with one single earring that only one ear wears. Our edit uses Rosa de la Cruz at Coveti, where many earrings are sold as singles, and a good anchor is the Diamond Huggie Hoops in yellow gold, at $2,110 for the pair.
Key facts
- An ear stack usually runs from the largest piece in the first lobe piercing to the smallest piece at the top.
- Huggies are small hoops that sit close to the ear; they are the most common anchor for a stack.
- Single earrings let you build an uneven, asymmetric ear without buying a pair you will only half wear.
- Many Rosa de la Cruz earrings are sold as singles, and the product name says Single.
- Cartilage piercings take longer to heal than lobe piercings, so ask your piercer before changing jewellery in a new one.
How to build an ear stack, step by step
Step 1: map your piercings. Count what you have on each ear: first lobe, second lobe, upper lobe, and any cartilage piercings such as the helix. Two to four pieces on one ear is a good stack; more than five starts to look busy unless the pieces are tiny.
Step 2: anchor the first lobe. Put your largest piece here. A huggie hoop, a charm earring and a pearl mini hoop all work. This is the piece people see first.
Step 3: step down in size. Each piercing above should hold a smaller piece than the one below it. A small stud in the second lobe and a tiny diamond in the third keeps the line tidy.
Step 4: add one single. Give one ear a piece the other does not have: a coloured stone, a charm, an ear cuff. That asymmetry is what makes a stack look personal.
Step 5: choose your metal rule. One metal throughout looks polished. Mixing works if each metal appears at least twice, for example yellow gold huggies with a yellow gold stud, and a dark rhodium stud with a dark rhodium cuff.

The best pieces for an ear stack
1. Diamond Huggie Hoops in 18K Yellow Gold, White Diamond, Pair, $2,110
Small huggies with white diamonds, also made in white gold, rose gold and dark rhodium. The foundation of most stacks.
2. Gold Mini Hoops in 18K Yellow Gold, Pair, $1,410
Plain 18 carat yellow gold mini hoops. Use them when the rest of the stack carries the stones.
3. Pearl Mini Hoops in 18K Yellow Gold, Pearl, Pair, $2,480
A pearl mini hoop softens a stack full of diamonds. It works best in the first lobe.
4. Star Studs in 18K Yellow Gold, Brown Diamond, Pair, $2,390
Small brown diamond stars for the second lobe. Our star earrings guide has the other sizes.
5. Rainbow Sapphire Earring in 18K Yellow Gold, Multi Sapphire, Single, Ref. RBW6001AS, $1,380
A single earring set with multicoloured sapphires. Coveti stocks three references in the series, so you can mix them across both ears.
6. Baroque Studs in 18K Yellow Gold, Green Chalcedony and White Diamond, Single, $1,370
Green chalcedony and a white diamond, sold as a single. A quiet way to add colour high on the ear.
7. Heart Stud in 18K Rhodium Gold, Brown Diamond, Single, $1,180
A dark rhodium heart with brown diamonds, sold as a single. It gives a yellow gold stack a darker accent.
8. Cascade Earring ‘a’ in 18K White Gold, White Diamond, Single, $2,800
The smallest of the Cascade singles in white gold with white diamonds. The series runs from ‘a’ to ‘d’, so you can build a graduated white diamond ear.
9. Safety Pin Earring in 18K Yellow Gold, Brown Diamond, $3,150
A brown diamond safety pin. Wear it as the one witty piece in an otherwise classic stack.
10. Ivy Earcuff in 18K Rose Gold, Brown Diamond, Single, $4,020
A rose gold ivy ear cuff with 0.78 carats of brown diamonds, sold as a single. It is the finishing piece for one ear only.
Three ear stacks to copy
The everyday stack. Yellow gold diamond huggies in the first lobe, brown diamond star studs in the second, one rainbow sapphire single at the top. Easy to sleep in, and it works with everything.
The white diamond stack. White gold huggies, then Cascade singles stepping down in size. All white gold keeps it crisp for evening.
The colour stack. Turquoise mini hoops in the first lobe, a turquoise star stud above, a green chalcedony single at the top. Our turquoise jewellery guide has the full range, and the brown diamond edit suits anyone who prefers warmer stones.
Frequently asked questions
What is an ear stack?
An ear stack is a group of earrings worn across several piercings on one ear, usually arranged from the largest piece in the lobe to the smallest piece at the top.
How many piercings do you need for an ear stack?
Two is enough to start, for example a first and second lobe. Most stacks look balanced with three to four pieces on one ear.
Should both ears match in an ear stack?
No. A common approach is to keep the lobes matching and make the upper piercings different, which is why single earrings are so useful for stacking.
Can you mix gold and silver tones in an ear stack?
Yes, as long as each tone appears at least twice so the mix looks intentional. Yellow gold with white gold, and yellow gold with a dark rhodium finish, both work well.
What earrings are best for sleeping in?
Small, flat pieces such as huggies and low profile studs are the most comfortable to sleep in. Leave drops, charms and ear cuffs for the daytime.
