Ikat Dresses: What Ikat Is, How to Wear It and 9 to Buy
An ikat dress is a dress made in, and patterned after, ikat: a resist-dye technique in which the yarns are bound and dyed before weaving, so every motif ends in a soft, feathered edge. Today most ikat dresses, including the ones in our designer midi dresses edit, carry an ikat-pattern print rather than a hand-woven cloth. This guide leads with the Tribal Ikat pieces on the Andres Otalora brand page, and our explainer on what ikat is and where it comes from covers the technique in more depth.
Key facts
- Ikat is a resist-dye technique in which yarns are bound and dyed before weaving, which gives each motif a feathered edge.
- The word ikat comes from the Malay and Indonesian mengikat, meaning to tie.
- The Andres Otalora Tribal Ikat is a printed pattern, not a woven ikat.
- In Fall Winter 2026 Tribal Ikat comes in cress green with brown and white, and in ivory and red.
Below: the difference between woven ikat and an ikat print, what to look for when you buy, how to wear an ikat dress once the weather turns, and nine pieces from the Colombian label’s Fall Winter 2026 collection and earlier seasons. What is ikat?
Ikat is a way of dyeing yarn before it ever reaches the loom. Bundles of thread are tied tightly at set points, dipped in dye, untied, retied and dyed again, so the pattern is already in the yarn when weaving begins. Because the threads shift very slightly as they are woven, the edges of each motif blur, and that feathered outline is the signature of the cloth.
The word comes from the Malay and Indonesian “mengikat”, meaning to tie. The technique is found across a wide stretch of the world: Uzbek silk ikat in Central Asia, the cotton and silk ikats of Indonesia and India, kasuri in Japan and jaspe in Guatemala and elsewhere in Latin America. Warp ikat dyes only the lengthwise threads, weft ikat dyes only the crosswise ones, and double ikat dyes both, which is the slowest and rarest of the three.
Is an ikat print the same as woven ikat?
No. A woven ikat has its pattern dyed into the yarn before weaving; an ikat print is a finished cloth printed with a design that copies the blurred, stepped look of ikat. Both are honest choices, but they are different things, and it helps to know which you are buying.
The Andres Otalora Tribal Ikat is a print. The house applies it to linen, viscose and a polyester and elastane blend, so the pattern sits on the surface of the fabric rather than running through the threads. That has practical upsides. A print can be placed on a light, fluid viscose that would be very hard to ikat-dye, and it can be cut into a wide trouser with stretch. The colours are crisp, and the motif repeats cleanly from dress to trouser, which makes the pieces easy to wear together.
A woven ikat feels different in the hand: the pattern looks the same on both sides, and the cloth tends to be firmer. If the reverse of a garment shows the motif just as clearly as the front, it is likely woven. If the back is pale, it is printed.
How to choose an ikat dress
Start with the colour of the ground, then the scale of the motif, then the fabric. Those three decide where you will actually wear it.
- Ground colour. An ivory ground with red, as in the Memoria Densa and the Umbria, reads lighter and suits daytime and spring weddings. A cress green ground with brown and white is deeper and sits better in autumn and winter.
- Motif scale. Bold ikat on a long skirt makes the dress the whole outfit. If you prefer quieter dressing, wear the print on a trouser and keep the top plain.
- Fabric. Linen has body and a dry, slightly crisp hand; it holds a clean line and creases softly. Viscose is lighter and drapes closer to the body. A polyester and elastane blend recovers its shape and travels well.
- Waist. A belt changes the proportion of a midi completely. The Umbria comes with its own; with the linen Memoria Densa, add a wide leather belt to mark the waist.
- Length. A midi length is the easiest ikat shape to wear to a daytime celebration, because the hem shows a heel and leaves room for a coat.
Nine ikat pieces worth buying
Andres Otalora leads this edit with Tribal Ikat in two colourways, cress green and ivory and red, cut as midi dresses and wide trousers, with a few earlier pieces and accessories to wear alongside.
1. Memoria Densa Midi Dress in Cress Green Tribal Ikat
The Memoria Densa in cress green is a fluid linen midi dress printed with Tribal Ikat in cress green, brown and white. Made in Colombia, it is the deeper of the two colourways and the one to wear from October onward. Add a knit over the shoulders by day and a heel at night.
2. Memoria Densa Midi Dress in Ivory and Red Tribal Ikat
The same linen midi in ivory and red. The pale ground lightens the pattern and lets the red motif carry the dress, so it suits a daytime wedding and a long lunch. Linen keeps it cool in a warm room.
3. Umbria Midi Dress with Belt
The Umbria is cut in viscose with Tribal Ikat in ivory and red, and it comes with a belt that defines the waist. Viscose falls closer to the body than linen, so the Umbria has a softer line. A sandal by day and a heel at night both work with it.
4. Me Quedas Pants in Cress Green Tribal Ikat
If you want the print without the dress, the Me Quedas is a wide-leg trouser in cress green Tribal Ikat, made in 95% polyester and 5% elastane. The stretch keeps the waist comfortable, and the wide leg gives the motif room. Wear it with a tucked blouse and a heel.
5. Me Quedas Pants in Ivory and Red Tribal Ikat
The Me Quedas again, in ivory and red. The strong contrast makes the trouser the centre of the outfit, so keep everything else plain: an ivory blouse and a simple shoe are enough.
6. Una Luz Blouse
To wear with the ikat trousers: the Una Luz, a light off-white blouse in silk double georgette, a heavier two-ply crepe georgette with a soft, slightly grainy hand. The cut is kept simple, which is what a busy print needs above it.
7. Lo que Late Leather Belt
The Lo que Late is a wide, structured belt in black leather that wraps the waist and ties at the front. Over the linen Memoria Densa it pulls in the volume and turns a loose midi into a waisted one.
8. Eternos Dress in Green
From an earlier resort season, the Eternos Dress in Green is already live at Coveti. Check the product page for its fabric and pattern; it is a lighter partner to the cress green ikat for warmer days.
9. Arco Real Dress
Also from an earlier season, the Arco Real Dress is a midi. If ikat is the look you like, it is worth comparing with the Fall Winter 2026 midis on length and line before you choose.
How do you wear an ikat dress in winter?
Layer over and under it rather than putting it away. An ikat midi in linen and viscose was cut for warm days, but it works well into winter with the right weights around it.
- Put a fine merino roll neck under the Umbria and belt over both. The viscose skims the knit without bulk.
- Wear the cress green Memoria Densa with a long camel coat and a knee boot. Brown in the print picks up the leather.
- For a winter wedding, add a sheer black tight and a pointed heel to the ivory and red midi, then a wool wrap for the walk between venues. Our guide to winter wedding guest dresses has more.
- Over the ikat trousers, try a cashmere cardigan buttoned and tucked at the front, and a wide leather belt to keep the line.
- Keep jewellery to gold and one piece at a time. Ikat is already a lot of pattern.
Red and ivory is also a strong evening pairing in its own right; see red and white dresses for more of that palette and how to wear a wide leather belt for belting a midi.

Wearing ikat around the world
Ikat travels well because the print looks equally at home in sun and in a winter city. How you wear it changes with the climate and the occasion.
In the US, the ivory and red midi suits spring and early autumn weddings in the South and on the West Coast, while in New York and Chicago the cress green version with a coat and boot carries into November. In the UK, ikat on linen is a summer and early autumn piece; the viscose Umbria with a roll neck under it is the winter route. In much of Europe, a midi with a belt is a natural choice for long lunches and city weekends from Lisbon to Milan. In the Gulf, the winter months are wedding season and evenings stay warm: wear the midi with a light long-sleeved layer under it for modest coverage, and choose the linen for outdoor evenings and the viscose for air-conditioned rooms. The wide Me Quedas trousers with a long blouse make a modest, comfortable outfit for a family celebration.
How does Andres Otalora sizing work?
Take your usual size; the house publishes body measurements rather than garment ones. Andres Otalora cuts in US sizes 0 to 12 and Coveti lists the UK equivalent: a US 0 is a UK 4, a US 4 is a UK 8 and a US 6 is a UK 10. The house size chart gives body measurements (bust, waist and hip in centimetres) rather than garment measurements, and the brand gives no fit corrections, so take your usual size and check the chart on each product page. The Lo que Late belt comes in XS to L, so size it to your waist rather than your dress.
Caring for an ikat print
The brand publishes no care labels online, so follow the label sewn into the garment. As a general rule, linen softens with each careful wash and is happiest pressed while slightly damp; viscose is weaker when wet and holds its shape best when handled gently and dried flat; a polyester and elastane blend should be kept away from high heat, which tires the stretch. Turn a printed garment inside out to protect the colour, and keep it out of strong sun when it is drying.

Frequently asked questions
What is an ikat dress?
An ikat dress is a dress in ikat cloth, where the yarn is bound and dyed before weaving, and also a dress printed with an ikat-style pattern. The feathered edge on each motif is what identifies the look.
Is the Andres Otalora Tribal Ikat woven?
No. Tribal Ikat is a printed pattern, applied to linen, viscose and a polyester and elastane blend in the Fall Winter 2026 collection.
Where does ikat come from?
Ikat is found from Central Asia to Indonesia, India, Japan and Latin America. The name comes from the Malay and Indonesian word mengikat, to tie.
How can you tell woven ikat from an ikat print?
Look at the reverse. Woven ikat shows the pattern almost as clearly on the back as on the front, while a print is usually pale on the reverse.
Can you wear an ikat dress in winter?
Yes. Layer a fine knit under it, add a belt, tights and a long coat, and choose a deeper ground such as cress green.
What do you wear with ikat pants?
A plain blouse in a colour from the print, such as ivory with the ivory and red Me Quedas, and a simple heel. Keep jewellery minimal.
Is an ikat dress right for a wedding?
An ikat midi in ivory and red suits a daytime wedding well. Add a heel and a wrap, and keep accessories quiet so the print leads.
