Bustier Tops: Bustier vs Corset, How to Wear Them and 10 to Buy

Andres Otalora De los Astros Pleated Top | Corset & Bustier Tops | Coveti

A bustier top is a fitted, strapless top that shapes the bust and stops around the waist, often with boning in the seams to hold it up. It differs from a corset, which is built to shape the waist. Our corset and bustier tops edit covers both, and this guide leads with the new strapless pieces on the Andres Otalora brand page, which pair naturally with the trousers in our guide to wide-leg trousers.

Key facts

  • A bustier is a fitted, often boned strapless top that shapes the bust and stops at the waist.
  • A corset is built to shape the waist, while a bandeau is a simple band of fabric with little structure.
  • The Andres Otalora Fall Winter 2026 collection has four strapless tops: De los Astros, Nos Reconocemos, Tan Amada and Sombra Clara.
  • The wine Sombra Clara top and Latiendo trousers share the same 69% rayon, 27% nylon and 4% spandex composition.

What follows: how a bustier, a corset and a bandeau differ, how to choose one for your bust and for the occasion, three ways to wear it, and ten pieces from the Andres Otalora Fall Winter 2026 collection and earlier seasons. For the whole collection, read our Andres Otalora Fall Winter 2026 guide.

What is the difference between a bustier, a corset and a bandeau?

A bustier supports the bust, a corset shapes the waist, and a bandeau is a simple band of fabric across the chest. The three are often sold under the same name, so the construction is what tells them apart.

Bustier

The bustier began as a lingerie piece and moved into outerwear. It is shaped through the cups and side seams, frequently boned, and finishes around the waist. Its job is to stay up and give the bust a smooth, lifted line without straps.

Corset

A corset is longer and firmer. It runs over the waist, sometimes down to the hip, and its boning and lacing pull the waist in. A modern corset top keeps the look of the seams and boning but is usually far gentler than a historical one.

Bandeau

A bandeau is a strip of fabric, often stretch, wrapped across the bust. It has little structure, so it depends on elastic and a close fit to stay in place. It is the most relaxed of the three.

The Andres Otalora tops in this edit sit between the bustier and the bandeau: strapless bodices cut close in linen, cotton with elastane, and rayon blends, shaped with pleats, a peplum and embroidery rather than heavy boning. The house does not publish whether any of them are boned, so check the product photographs and the fit notes on each page.

How to choose a bustier top

Choose by support first, then by fabric, then by occasion. A strapless top that does not stay put will spoil the outfit however good it looks on the hanger.

  • For a fuller bust, look for structure: firm fabric, shaped seams and a bodice that is fitted at the top edge. A stretch cotton such as the 93% cotton and 7% elastane of the Nos Reconocemos grips well.
  • For a smaller bust, texture helps. Pleats, like those that wrap the De los Astros, and embroidery add shape without padding.
  • For daytime, pick a matte, natural fabric such as linen in beige and wear it with a soft trouser.
  • For evening, embroidery and a deep colour do the work. Wine and black with ivory embroidery read as dressed with nothing else added.
  • For a wedding guest look, a bustier with a maxi skirt gives you the line of a gown in two pieces, which is easier to fit.
  • Check the length. A bustier that stops at the natural waist suits a high-waisted bottom; a peplum hides the join with a lower one.

How do you wear a bustier top?

Balance the close fit on top with volume below, and keep the shoulders bare unless you are adding a jacket. Three formulas work again and again.

With wide trousers

The easiest. A strapless top above a high-waisted wide leg gives a long, clean line. Match the colour for a column, as with the wine Sombra Clara and the wine Latiendo trousers, which share the same rayon, nylon and spandex composition. See more in burgundy wide-leg trousers.

With a maxi skirt

For evening, a bustier above a full designer maxi skirt reads like a gown. The black Tan Amada with the Invernal maxi skirt, both banded in ivory embroidery, is the obvious pairing in this collection.

Under a blazer

For the office and for dinner, wear a bustier under an open tailored blazer with trousers in the same colour as the jacket. Only a slice of the top shows, and the outfit looks finished without being formal.

Ten bustier and embellished tops worth buying

Andres Otalora leads this edit with four strapless tops from Fall Winter 2026, followed by two embellished tops, two bottoms to pair with them and two earlier pieces already at Coveti.

1. De los Astros Pleated Top

The De los Astros is a strapless linen top in beige, with soft pleats that wrap the bodice and give it movement. Linen has a dry, natural hand, so this is the daytime choice. Wear it with wide trousers from the same collection.

2. Nos Reconocemos Top

The Nos Reconocemos is a black strapless top in 93% cotton and 7% elastane, with clean lines and a soft peplum finish. The stretch helps it stay in place, and the peplum covers the waistband. Tuck it into a full skirt for evening.

3. Tan Amada Embroidered Top

The Tan Amada is a strapless black top in 92% rayon and 8% polyester, banded with ivory embroidery. It is the most graphic of the four and pairs directly with the Invernal skirt below.

4. Sombra Clara Embroidered Top

The Sombra Clara is a wine strapless top in 69% rayon, 27% nylon and 4% spandex, with embroidered stripes crossing the bodice. Wine is a deep purplish red, and it looks richest worn head to toe with the matching trousers.

5. Mi Interior Embellished Top

Not strapless, but close in spirit: the Mi Interior is a linen top in a black and ecru abstract floral, with pearl details along the straps. If a bare shoulder line without the strapless worry appeals, start here.

6. Mi Bohemia Embellished Top

The Mi Bohemia is a black embellished top in 96% polyester and 4% spandex, with wide sleeves that end in tassels. It is the covered alternative for a winter evening, worn with the same wide trousers.

7. Invernal Embroidered Maxi Skirt

To wear with the Tan Amada: the Invernal is a black maxi skirt in 92% rayon and 8% polyester, bordered in ivory embroidery that also traces its front split. Keep the top half simple and let the skirt move.

8. Latiendo Pants

The Latiendo trousers are wine, in the same 69% rayon, 27% nylon and 4% spandex as the Sombra Clara. Together they make a two-piece that reads as one long line from bust to floor.

9. Vivir mas Dress

From an earlier resort season, the Vivir mas Dress is a strapless metallic dress already live at Coveti. If you like the bustier line but want a single piece, it is the one to look at.

10. Dahlia Top

The Dahlia Top, also from an earlier season, is a lighter option for warmer days. Check the product page for its fabric and neckline before you choose.

Wearing a bustier top around the world

A strapless top is a warm-weather piece first, and in winter it becomes an evening and indoor one. Climate and occasion decide how much you layer around it.

In the US, a bustier with wide trousers is a standard summer wedding and rooftop look, and in a New York winter it moves under a blazer and a long coat. In the UK, wear the linen De los Astros from May to September and switch to the black and wine pieces, with a jacket over the shoulders, for Christmas parties. Across Europe, a strapless top with a maxi skirt suits a summer evening on the coast and a winter dinner in town alike. In the Gulf, winter is wedding season and evenings stay warm even when the air conditioning is cold: wear the bustier as a layer, with a sheer long-sleeved blouse under it and a long skirt, which keeps the line of the top and gives modest coverage. The Mi Bohemia, with its wide sleeves, is the ready-made covered option.

Sizing a strapless top

Size to your bust, and check that the top edge sits flat without gaping. Andres Otalora cuts in US sizes 0 to 12 and Coveti lists the UK equivalent: a US 0 is a UK 4, a US 4 is a UK 8 and a US 6 is a UK 10. The house size chart gives body measurements (bust, waist and hip in centimetres) rather than garment measurements, and the brand gives no fit corrections, so take your usual size and check the chart on each product page. If you are between sizes in a strapless top, the bust measurement is the one that matters most, because the top has nothing else holding it up.

Caring for a bustier top

The brand publishes no care labels online, so follow the label inside each piece. Embroidered and embellished tops are best kept away from the washing machine and stored flat, with tissue between the folds so stitching does not catch. Linen can be steamed; avoid a hot iron directly on embroidery.

Frequently asked questions

What is a bustier top?

A bustier top is a fitted, strapless top that shapes and supports the bust and ends around the waist. Many are boned in the seams to stay up.

What is the difference between a bustier and a corset?

A bustier shapes the bust and stops at the waist, while a corset is built to shape the waist itself, usually with firmer boning. A corset top often runs lower over the hip.

Is a bandeau the same as a bustier?

No. A bandeau is a simple band of fabric across the bust with little structure, while a bustier is shaped through the seams to give support.

What do you wear with a bustier top?

High-waisted wide trousers, a full maxi skirt and an open blazer all work. Balance the close fit on top with volume below.

How do you keep a strapless top up?

Buy it to fit your bust closely, choose a fabric with some stretch and structure, and wear a well-fitted strapless bra under it.

Can you wear a bustier top to a wedding?

Yes. Paired with a maxi skirt in a deep colour such as wine and black, a bustier reads as a two-piece evening look.

Can you wear a bustier top in winter?

Yes, as an evening and indoor piece. Wear it under a blazer, add a long coat and choose black and wine over pale linen.
