Lightweight Packable Down Jackets for Men: The Ultralight Edit

A lightweight packable down jacket is a thin, down-filled layer with a very fine shell that compresses into a bag and springs back when you take it out. Herno has built its name on exactly this kind of jacket: its Nylon Ultralight pieces combine 20-denier Japanese nylon with 90/10 injected down, and at Coveti they start at $1,160.

Quick answer

  • Lightness comes from two things: a fine shell yarn, measured in denier, and a high share of down in the fill.
  • Herno Nylon Ultralight uses 20-denier Japanese nylon with 90/10 injected down padding.
  • Herno describes Nylon Ultralight as highly water-resistant with a silk-like feel.
  • Vests pack smallest. Bombers and hooded jackets add warmth for a little more volume.
  • Never store a down jacket compressed. Pack it for the journey, then hang it to recover its loft.
  • The seven picks below run from $1,160 to $2,080.

What makes a down jacket lightweight?

Denier is the weight of a yarn. The lower the number, the finer the thread and the lighter the fabric. A 20-denier nylon, which is what Herno uses for Nylon Ultralight, is very fine: it feels closer to a shirt than a ski jacket, and it folds without stiffness.

The fill matters just as much. Down clusters trap more warm air for their weight than feathers do, so a 90/10 mix, 90% down to 10% feather, gives real warmth with very little mass. Thin, even quilting keeps the down spread across the body, which is why ultralight jackets tend to have narrow channels rather than fat, puffy baffles.

The trade-off is simple. A light jacket is a light layer. It will keep you warm on a cold, dry city day and under a coat in deep winter, but it is not built for a mountain at minus twenty.

What does packable actually mean?

Packable means the jacket compresses into a small space without damage and recovers its shape when you unpack it. Down is very good at this because each cluster springs back once it has air around it. A fine shell helps because there is less fabric to fold.

Some technical brands sell jackets with a stuff sack. Luxury pieces usually travel folded in a packing cube, which is gentler on the fabric and the finish. Either way, the rules are the same: pack it for the trip, take it out on arrival, shake it and hang it.

How do you pack a down jacket?

  1. Close the zip and lay the jacket flat, front down.
  2. Fold the sleeves across the back, then fold the sides in to make a long rectangle.
  3. Roll it tightly from the hem toward the collar, pressing the air out as you go.
  4. Slip it into a packing cube. A soft pouch in the corner of a carry-on works too.
  5. On arrival, unroll it, give it a firm shake and hang it for an hour to let the down loft.

Avoid leaving it rolled for weeks. Down that stays compressed for long periods loses loft, and that loss of loft means a colder jacket.

Which shapes pack best?

Shape Packs to Warmth Best use
Vest Smallest Core only Under a coat, over a knit, travel
Bomber Small Moderate City days, flights, autumn
Hooded jacket Medium Good Everyday winter wear, showers
Quilted jacket Medium Moderate Mild winters, smart casual

What is Herno Nylon Ultralight?

Nylon Ultralight is the fabric Herno describes as iconic, and the one that embodies what the house is really about. It is built from 20-denier Japanese nylon with exquisite 90/10 injected down padding, in Herno’s own words, for an even lighter feel. Herno says the result gives decent resistance to water with a particularly luxurious, silk-like feel.

Herno has been known for light nylon parkas and down jackets since the 1980s, long before ultralight became a trend. The difference you notice is the hand: Nylon Ultralight is soft and quiet, without the crisp rustle of a sports puffer.

The best lightweight packable down jackets for men

All seven come from the Herno men’s collection at Coveti and were chosen for low weight, easy packing and everyday use.

1. Camel Resort Bomber Jacket in Ultralight Nylon and Suede-Effect Microfibre

The pick for travellers, at $2,080. It is pure Nylon Ultralight: 20-denier Japanese nylon with injected 90/10 down, trimmed in suede-effect microfibre at the collar and cuffs. The bomber shape is short, so it rolls small. Camel looks warm with navy, grey and cream. Wear it on the plane, then over a knit for dinner.

2. Blue and Chantilly Vest in Nylon Ultralight

The lightest piece here and the entry point at $1,160. It uses the full Nylon Ultralight technology, 20-denier Japanese nylon with 90/10 injected down. A vest packs smaller than any jacket and adds warmth at the chest without bulk under a coat. The blue and chantilly two-tone is a gentle change from plain navy.

3. Light Blue Resort Vest in Ultralight Nylon and Suede-Effect Microfibre

A smarter vest, at $1,570, with suede-effect microfibre trims on Nylon Ultralight. Herno describes it as giving decent resistance to water with a silk-like feel. Light blue suits spring and resort trips as well as winter layering. It suits men who want a light layer they can wear over a shirt in March and under a coat in January.

4. La Giacca Hooded Down Jacket in Light Taupe

The warmest pick, at $1,970. La Giacca is Herno’s legendary classic, in recycled nylon microfibre with a light coating on the reverse for a soft feel and a waterproof matt finish. The hood makes it a proper winter jacket, yet it still folds into a cabin bag. Light taupe is easy with denim and ecru knitwear.

5. Il Giacco in Navy Blue

Il Giacco is Herno’s classic quilted jacket, in the same recycled nylon microfibre with a light coating as La Giacca. At $1,550 it is a clean, collared layer that works with chinos and a shirt. Navy goes with almost anything you will pack. Choose it for mild winters, spring evenings and the shoulder seasons.

6. Lo Smanicato in Light Taupe

Lo Smanicato is Herno’s classic vest, at $1,350, in coated recycled nylon microfibre with a high neck, striped quilting and the metal logo. It is a little more structured than the Nylon Ultralight vests and holds its shape over a knit. Light taupe works with grey, brown and denim. It suits men who run warm and want free arms.

7. Military Bomber Jacket in Nylon Chamonix

For colder trips, at $1,720. Nylon Chamonix is Herno’s high-performance technical nylon, here with down padding and Polartec technology for warmth and wind resistance, under the HERNO POLAR-TECH label: water-repellent, light and thermal. It packs a little bigger than Nylon Ultralight but is warmer in wind. Military green pairs with denim and navy.

How should a lightweight down jacket fit?

A lightweight jacket is meant to sit close. You want it to close over a shirt and a fine knit without pulling across the back. If it is loose, warm air escapes at the hem and the cuffs.

Herno publishes a fit type on each product, and most styles are regular fit. Herno does not publish a blanket statement that it runs small, so order your usual jacket size. Go up one only if you will wear a thick knit under a slim-fit piece. Coveti lists Herno sizes as UK and US chest numbers, which are the Italian size minus 10, so IT 50 is a 40. The Herno size guide has the full chart.

Lightweight down jackets around the world

  • UK: a light down layer is the most useful jacket for a British autumn and spring. Pick a coated shell such as La Giacca for showers. UK chest size is the Italian size minus 10.
  • US: on the West Coast a light jacket can be your only winter layer. In New York and Chicago, wear a vest under a wool coat. US chest sizes match the UK numbers.
  • Europe: buyers can read the Italian size directly. A light bomber and a vest cover most city winters in southern Europe, while the north calls for layering.
  • Japan: Herno has had stores in Osaka and Tokyo since 1968. Light, compact layers suit busy commutes and heated trains. Compare your measurements with the IT size.
  • Middle East and Australia: here a packable jacket is a travel tool, for long-haul flights, ski trips and European winters. Coveti ships from hubs in the UAE and Australia.

How do you care for a lightweight down jacket?

Follow the care label first. Hang it on a broad hanger between wears and never store it compressed. Spot clean small marks with a damp cloth. For a full wash, see our guide on how to wash a down jacket. If you want more warmth for a longer winter, our edit of Herno gilets and down vests shows how to layer a vest under a coat.

Frequently asked questions

What is the lightest Herno down jacket?

The lightest Herno down pieces use Nylon Ultralight: 20-denier Japanese nylon with 90/10 injected down. The Blue and Chantilly Vest in Nylon Ultralight, at $1,160, is the lightest pick in this guide.

Can you pack a Herno down jacket in a carry-on?

Yes. Roll it tightly from hem to collar and put it in a packing cube. Unroll it and hang it when you arrive so the down can recover its loft.

Is a lightweight down jacket warm enough for winter?

On its own it suits cold, dry city days. For colder weather, wear a light down vest under a wool coat, which adds warmth at the chest without bulk.

Does packing a down jacket damage it?

Short-term packing does not harm good down. Long-term compression does reduce loft, so never store a down jacket rolled up. Hang it between wears.

Is Nylon Ultralight waterproof?

Herno describes Nylon Ultralight as highly water-resistant, and on its bombers and vests it says the fabric gives decent resistance to water. It is not sold as a fully waterproof shell.
