Maison Margiela Trousers and Jeans: Every Fit Explained

Maison Margiela trousers come in two worlds. The denim is treated, cut and rebuilt: bleached panels, slashes at the knee and seams moved to unusual places. The tailoring is calm and exact: tuxedo stripes, pleated wool and mohair. Coveti stocks more than 25 styles in the Maison Margiela collection, from jeans to tailored trousers.

Quick answer

  • Jeans: sized by waist in inches, mostly 24 to 33; many styles are wide and long.
  • Trousers: Italian sizes; IT 42 is UK 10.
  • Signature denim: cut-out, bleached and spliced.
  • Signature tailoring: the satin-waist tuxedo trouser.

The jeans

Margiela denim is where Glenn Martens's background at Diesel shows. The Bleached Spliced Jeans in Light Indigo joins bleached panels across the leg, the Bleached Cut-Out Jeans in Light Indigo cuts openings above the knee, and the Straight Jeans with Contrasted Pockets in Blue Jeans adds contrast pockets with decortique details. For an easier pair, the Straight-Leg Jeans in Light Blue and the Wide-Leg Jeans in Light Blue are clean straight and wide legs in light blue. The Distressed Jeans in Blue is distressed.

The tailored trousers

The Satin-Waist Virgin Wool Tuxedo Trousers in Black has satin bands down the sides and a satin waist, cut wide and full length. The Pleated Wool Tailored Trousers in Dark Grey is pleated wool, the Wool Tailored Trousers in Ecru is ecru wool and the Herringbone Wool Pleated Trousers in Black is herringbone. The Wool Mohair Trousers in Dark Avion has the same Greasy Patina finish as its matching jacket.

Leather, satin and cargo

The Leather Trousers in Black is the statement pair. The Satin Drawstring Trousers in Pink Beige is satin with a drawstring, made for evening and holidays. The Cotton Cargo Trousers in Olive is a relaxed cotton cargo in olive. The Floral Sequin Patchwork Trousers in Multicolour is covered in floral sequin patchwork.

How the sizes work

Jeans use waist sizes in inches. Take your usual denim size, and check the product page for the inseam, because many styles are cut long to stack at the ankle. Tailored trousers use Italian sizes. Maison Margiela sizes its ready-to-wear in Italian sizes, which run four above UK, so an IT 42 is a UK 10. Knitwear comes in letter sizes and jeans in waist sizes.
